Attitudes of Grade 12 GTAW Students towards Academic Subjects

Context and Rationale

TVL or Technical Vocational Livelihood is one of the strands being offered


by the Senior High School Department consisting grade 11 and grade 12. This includes
welding, cookery, cosmetics, baking and any other livelihood courses. According to
Rhoda (2011), classroom environment and their existing knowledge on the particular
subject plays an important role. Ability and responsibility is indeed needed under this
courses and this strand because it does not only enhance your knowledge but also, it
develops the creativity of the students who are taking these courses and this strand
under SHS Department. Additional to this is the classroom environment which
influences the ability of an individual student to apply his or her skills.

SHS Department offers this strand to give a good future to students and most of
the students does not only need to show their skills but they should have good attitudes
towards their chosen strand which is TVL or Technical Vocational Livelihood.

The word attitude is needed in every moment especially on communicating and


on doing various and several works inside or outside the school premises. Under the
course of TVL, creativity and being wise is not enough especially if a student does not
apply the right attitude during classes or during actual practices under their strand.
Students who have negative attitude towards education activities are found to exhibit
challenging behavior including anti-social and off-task behavior (Awang, Jindal-Snape &
Barber, 2013).In a class, having a negative attitude or behavior leads to non-interest of
the subject matter and applying the anti-social or no interest on socializing with
everyone about the subject being attended to.
One of the most know school at Bauan, Batangas is Bauan Technical High School
and like other schools, it also offers the SHS strand and it includes the ABM, STEM,
HUMMS, and especially the highlighted strand which is TVL. TVL strand in Bauan
Technical High School offers a specialized major which is welding. In welding, it is
needed of perseverance and responsibility. In knowing also about this course needs the
right attitude for this strand is mostly consisting boys with different talents and skills
based on the field of welding.

This research study would define the right attitudes needed for the TVL strand. It
would also cover the attitudes that most of the students of BTHS under the TVL strand
possess most and apply the most. Through this research, it would also help the students
to know what attitudes fit the most especially on their chosen strand and how it would
help them to cope up with the strand they are on to.

The research would be significant to the community for this research will lessen
the student’s misbehavior before engaging to a company. It will also have its
significance to the school itself for this will aid the teachers to easily handle their
students. It would also aid the students for this will be a guide for their future use. And
lastly, it would be significant to the future researchers to give them idea and guide them
about attitude towards academic matters.

The researchers proposes the program which will be called “Correcting the Mindset”.

Through this program, the students are expected to develop a deeper appreciation to

the lives and works of welders. In it, the students will be paired and set to an

exploration assignment where they need to interview a known and passionate welder

from their barangay, those working locally or even abroad. These interviews should be
in the video format that will be played and watched by every TVL- Welding students.

The video must be in a maximum of ten minutes.

The program will be divided in to three phases which will be covering two

months. The first phase will be an initial assessment phase to recognize the level of

appreciation of the welding students to the work welders in the industry do. It will be

followed by the second phase. The students will be given time in watching a video clip of

the interview. The third phase will be the evaluation phase which will be conducted

through another series of interview.

Innovation and interventional strategy

Attitude among TVL students towards the practice on becoming a welder is

unceasingly important as it would pose as an intangible basis for keeping in or letting a

person go in a company. The researchers see it practical to make the students realize it

even before they get the opportunity to work within the company already.

VI. Action research objectives

The research on process would determine the following objectives to do the

research study based on the topic at present. The following are the objectives which are

indeed needed for gathering data:

1. To determine academic performance

1.2. 2nd Sem

2. To determine the attitude of the respondents in terms of:

2.1. Behavior in Class

2.2. Behavior during welding subject

2.3. Behavior during practicum

3. To compare similarities and differences among students’ behavior and grades.

4. Propose a plan of action for the given situation

Action research methods

A. Participants and other sources of information

The researchers gathered data and information from primary and secondary

sources for the study at hand. The primary data is quantitative research which is based

on the questionnaire that focuses on the Attitudes of Grade 12 GTAW Student towards

TVL Subject. The participants of the study are 15 welding students each of the sections

which are GTAW A and GTAW B in equivalent to 30 respondents.

B. Data Gathering

The researcher’s data gathering method to be used is giving out survey

questionnaire to the respondents who are the GTAW A and GTAW B welding students.
Through this method, there will be a fulfillment to answer and gather information

towards the said topic of the study.

C. Data Analysis

The researchers will seek for the approval of the proposal. The researchers cited

ideas in a technologically way and based on using the internet about the things related

to the topic being proposed. If the proposal for this research will be approved, the

researchers will gather related information about the respondents. After the data are

gathered, it will be analyzed and interpreted by the researchers.

METHODOLOGY

The researchers will choose 30 welding students in total. 15 welding students

from the first section which is GTAW A and another set of 15 selected welding

students in the second section which is GTAW B. The 30 respondents would be part

of the study .
