EXPERIMENT NO. 10
TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF RATE OF LOADING ON THE
COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF P.C.C CUBE AND CYLINDER

10.1 SCOPE:
 To study the effect of rate of loading on uniaxial compressive strength of
concrete cubes and cylinders at 28 days.

10.2 APPARATUS
 Universal Testing Machine
 Cylindrical Concrete Specimens
 Cubical Concrete Specimens

10.3 RELATED THEORY

This test method consists of applying a compressive axial load to molded cylinders at
a prescribed manner until it failure. The compressive strength of concrete is calculated
by dividing the maximum load attains by the test by the cross-sectional area of the
specimen.
ASTM C39, Standard Test Method for Compressive Strength of Cylindrical Concrete
Specimens, specifies that the loading rate fall within 0.14 to 0.34 MPa/sec (20 to 50
psi/sec). On average, the compressive strength of cylinders tested at the high load
rate limit will be 3% greater than cylinders tested at the low load rate limit.

The results of this test method are used as a basis for quality control of concrete
proportioning, mixing, and placing operations; determination of compliance with
specifications; control for evaluating effectiveness of admixtures; and similar uses.

10.4 PROCEDURE:
Compression test of the specimen shall be made as soon as possible after the removal
from moist storage.

2.1.1 PLACING OF THE SPECIMEN:

Place the lower bearing plate with its harden face up on the table of testing machine
directly under the upper bearing block. Wipe and clean the upper and lowering face of
the bearing blocks of the test specimen and place the specimen on the lower bearing
block. Carefully align the center of thrust of the upper bearing block. Prior to the testing
verify the load indicator is set to zero. As the upper block is brought to bear on the
specimen, rotate its moveable portion gently by hand so that uniformly seating is
obtained.

2.1.2 RATE OF LOADING:

We have to test the specimen by different rate of loadings to fine the effect on
compressive strength of different specimens.
We will test specimen by these rates of loading

 0.25 Mpa/second
 6.7 Mpa/second

In generally the lower rate of loading the lower the measure compressive strength
according to research if the loading rate 0.07 Mpa/sec reduce the indicate strength of
concrete cylinder by 12% on other hand a loading rate 6.9 Mpa/sec increase the
indicate strength by 12 %.

This may be attributed to fact that deformation generated by loading need time to
developed the slow rate of loading allows more sub critical cracks growth thus loading
to formation of large flows and hence smaller apparent load.
On the other hand, it may be the slower loading rate allow more creep to occur which
will increase the amount of strain.

10.5 PRECAUTIONS:
 To wear safety shoes & helmet during the time of test.
 Before testing, machine should be checked.
 After test electric supply should be off.
 After test clean the sieve by brush.
 Keep all the exposed metal parts greased.
 Keep the guide rods firmly fixed to the base & top plate.
 Equipment should be cleaned thoroughly before testing & after testing.
