Date of expiration
Method of storage
Net quantity
Essential mixing instructions

In addition, the label shall indicate limits for storage and critical minimum / maximum storage
temperature requirements.

6. ACKNOWLEDGMENT:

A supplier shall mention this specification number and its revision letter in all quotations and when
acknowledging purchase orders.

7. REJECTIONS:

Product not conforming to this specification, or to modifications authorized by purchaser, will be

subject to rejection.

8. NOTES:

8.1 Background:

A task force developed this unified specification under the sponsorship of the European Airlines
Committee for Materials Technology (EACMT), with support from major OEMs and paint
suppliers. It is based upon the Association of European Airlines (AEA) unpublished work,
“Aircraft Exterior Finishes, Performance Characteristics of the Ideal Exterior Paint Scheme”,
which defines the performance levels which European airlines consider to be essential.

The specification tries to create not only an industry wide understanding of the basic tests
necessary to describe the quality level of the products, but also contains a joint approach to use
identical test methods in order to ease comparison of material evaluations. Also the
specification sets the performance requirements that the task force thinks to be achievable
today. These requirements will be improved with future issues in order to meet, in the end, the
targets outlined in the above mentioned AEA work. Information from the on-going durability
correlation exercise will assist this.

8.1 (Continued):

Environmental, health and safety (EHS) aspects as yet have not been specified, because no
common standards could be identified. However guidance on compliant VOC levels is included
in and is the basis for requirements of 3.2.1.3.

Nevertheless, a general objective is to minimize EHS hazards. Specific attention should be

given to the following key characteristics: (1) Avoid toxic compounds, especially carcinogenic,
mutagenic and teratogenic ingredients. (2) Reduce solvent content, VOC. (3) Minimize disposal
(quantitative minimization with low requirements, e.g. simple landfill for non-toxic solid
materials). In the meantime, the users should take all these properties into consideration during
product selection.

8.2 Definitions:

Definitions of terms and expressions used for paints as given in ISO 4617, ISO 4618-1, 4618-2
and 4618-3 shall apply, with the exception of those defined below:

8.2.1 Paint system: The exterior coating for a civil aircraft consisting of one or more coats of
specific material to fulfill the requirements of AMS 3095 and any necessary chemical
pretreatment.

8.2.2 Batch: Quantity of one component of a product with the same composition and resulting from
the same production run.

8.2.3 Volatile Organic Content (VOC): Composition of one or more VOCs containing at least the
elements of carbon and hydrogen, or in which hydrogen is partially or completely replaced by
halogens, oxygen, sulfur, phosphorus or nitrogen, with the exception of carbon monoxide,
carbon dioxide and carbonates, and a vapor pressure of 1.3 kPa (10 mm Hg) or more, at 20
°C (68 °F).

8.2.4 Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM):

8.2.5 Unified Specification: The current OEM specification updated and configured to
characteristics detailed in the AEA unpublished work, “Aircraft Exterior Finishes, Performance
Characteristics of the Ideal Exterior Paint Scheme”. See 8.1

8.3 Basis for Initial Color Difference:

DIN 6175-1 describes color tolerances for specific color areas in automotive OEM solid color
topcoats. These tolerances are multiplied by a correction factor of 1.5 for practical application.
This same correction factor is also used for incoming color inspection in the aircraft industry.

The color areas in Table 5 are only approximate divisions. In transition areas between color
groups one or the other value may apply. In DIN 6175-1 the accurate division between these ∆E
tolerance values is defined exactly.

8.3 (Continued):

DIN 6174 provides the basis for an internationally used color measurement system established
by the Commission International d’Eclairage (CIE). The CIELAB-color distance formula defines
the distances between the individual colors that support the structure of the RAL Design System
(Color fan RAL-F 81).

8.4 Purchase documents should specify not less than the following:

AMS 3095A
Type and size of containers (kits) desired
Quantity of containers (kits) desired
Special packaging, if required.
