DAU TROUBLESHOOTING
The DAU has two operating data channels, which have redundant
information. All the signals are routed internally to two completely
independent channels (A and B). Each channel has its own power
supply and processors. Each channel gathers the information and
outputs them in digital busses.
Attention – Prior to DAU replacement, make sure that all
troubleshooting alternatives have been checked.

INITIAL EVALUATION
A. Make sure that the following circuit breakers are closed:
– DAU 1A;
– DAU 2A;
– DAU 1B;
– DAU 2B.

MOST PROBABLE CAUSES

A. Defective Harness (WM 31-41-50).
B. Malfunction of the ground stud (WM 31-41-50).
C. Intermittent problem with DAU connector (WM 20-50-00_2).
D. DAU Failure.

QUICK CHECKS
A. Remove the DAU, and re-install it back.
Did the message disappear?
1. Yes the message disappeared.
2. No. Check if there is ground signal according to the table
below, in the respective faulty side:

SEP 2005 31-3

a. Are the measurements ok?
– Yes all voltage measurements are ok. Go to step B.
– No. Go to the FIM task according to the related DAU
fail message (Table 3).

2. No. Repair the ground studs (Figures 2 and 3) as necessary.

Check the ground stud for:
– Corrosion.
– Misplacing.
– Melting.
If the defective DAU is the DAU 1, check for correct cables
position. The cables cannot force the connector and pins
down. See Figure 2 below as reference.
It is also recommendable to check the ground stud
resistance. Using as ground reference the battery ground
point at battery compartment or ground point at the tail cone
door, according to Figure 4, with the Miliohmimeter (GSE
045) check the resistance value of 0.5 mΩ in the ground
stud.
NOTE: This resistance value is reached only using the
battery ground point at the battery compartment or ground
point at the tail cone door, as applicable, as ground
reference.

31-4 SEP 2006

B. NOTE: The operator can, at his discretion, use alternative
replacement procedures or policies that have already been
approved and are in use by the airline. These alternative
replacement procedures include experimental replacement of
parts, use of parts obtained from an aircraft on different aircraft
of the same fleet, interchange of equivalent parts of the same
aircraft, etc. Therefore, the operator must take responsibility for
all applicable precautions. In case of interchange (swap) of
units with same part number installed in the aircraft it is always
assumed that the LRU being interchanged does not have any
failure. If the interchange (swap) of units with same part number
installed in the aircraft is not allowed according to airline
policies go to the respective FIM task referred in Table 3.

CAUTION: • MAKE SURE THAT ALL VOLTAGE AND GROUND

CHECKS WHERE ACCOMPLISHED SUCCESSFULLY,
IN ORDER TO ENSURE THE DA-800 UNIT INTEGRITY.

• MAKE SURE THAT THE DEFECTIVE DAU AND

THE CROSS SIDE DAU HAVE THE SAME PART
NUMBER.

SEP 2006 31-5

Open the following circuit breakers:
– DAU 1A.
– DAU 1B.
– DAU 2A.

– AIR/GND C (Location Tip: DC BUS 2/LDG GEAR/AIR/GND C);
– AIR/GND D (Location Tip: ESSENTIAL DC BUS2/LDG GEAR/
AIR/GND D).

PROBABLE CAUSES
A. Failure of two MLG WOW proximity switch assemblies, not
necessarily located on the same MLG leg.
B. LGEU failure.

QUICK CHECKS
A. Using the laptop, download the CMC (AMM 45-45-00-970-802-A).
B. Look for the messages “LG AIR/GND – LGEU FAIL” and “LG
AIR/GND – PROX SW FAIL” on the download of the CMC.
1. If these messages appear at the same CMC download at the
same time, disregard the message “LG AIR/GND – LGEU FAIL”
and do the troubleshooting according to the steps C thru K.
2. If only the message “LG AIR/GND – LGEU FAIL” appears at
the CMC download, check the contact of the LGEU
connectors and, if necessary, replace the LGEU.

32-8 SEP 2005

3. If only the message “LG AIR/GND – PROX SW FAIL”
appears at the CMC download, do the troubleshooting
according to the steps C thru K.
C. Look for messages related to the failure of the WOW proximity
switches.
1. “LG LEFT WOW PROX SW FAIL”.
2. “LG RIGHT WOW PROX SW FAIL”.
D. According to the messages on the CMC, identify which WOW failed.
1. If GSE 012 or GSE 344 is available use them to identify which
WOW failed (TASK 32-63-05-700-801-A) or (TASK 32-63-05-
700-802-A). If these GSEs are not available, check all WOW
proximity switches related to the CMC fail messages.
E. Check the gap between the proximity switch and the target and
adjust this gap accordingly (TASK 32-63-05-700-803-A or TASK
32-63-05-700-804-A).
F. If applicable, remove the heat-shrinkable boot from the related
WOW assemblies.
G. Disconnect the WOW connector and check it and the pins of
the proximity switch for signs of corrosion.
1. If corrosion is found in the proximity switch, replace it as
necessary (TASK 32-63-01/4).
2. If corrosion is found in the connector assembly, apply the
repair kit (WM 20-50-00).
H. Check if the proximity switch is working properly and if
necessary replace it (TASK 32-63-01/4).
I. Protect the harness and the proximity switch against corrosion
using the special grease inside the plugs and the protective spray
on the outside of the plugs (refer to TASK 32-60-00-910-801-A).
J. If necessary, service the MLG Shock Absorber and make sure
that the dimension “H” is correct (TASK 32-10-02-600-801-A).

The message “LG AIR/GND FAIL” on the EICAS is not due to the
failure of the NLG WOW. Anyway, if the message “LG NOSE WOW
PROX SW FAIL” appears on the download of the CMC, do the
procedures below:
A. Check the gap between the proximity switch and the target and
adjust this gap accordingly (TASK 32-63-05-700-803-A or TASK
32-63-05-700-804-A).
B. If applicable, remove the heat-shrinkable boot from the NLG
WOW assembly.
D. Check if the proximity switch is working properly and, if
necessary, replace it (TASK 32-63-02/4).
E. Protect the harness and the proximity switch against corrosion
using the special grease inside the plugs and the protective
spray on the outside of the plugs (refer to TASK 32-60-00-910-
801-A).
F. If necessary, service the NLG shock absorber and make sure
that the dimension “H” is correct (TASK 32-20-01-600-801-A).

LG LEFT WOW PROX SW FAIL (CMC) 32-63-00-810-806-A
LG NOSE WOW PROX SW FAIL (CMC) 32-63-00-810-802-A

GENERAL TIPS
A. When troubleshooting the system with a CMC download, make
sure that the associated circuit breakers were not opened earlier.
Every time the AIR/GND A, B, C or D circuit breakers, located
on the circuit breaker panel are opened, CMC messages are
generated and should not be considered for troubleshooting
purposes.
B. NOTE: Reset the CMC after the troubleshooting and change
the CMC switch on the maintenance panel to the “ENABLE”
position.
When checking the harness, remember to check all the
connectors.
Make sure that the connectors are well attached to avoid bad
contact.
To guarantee that these connectors are not with bad contact,
shake the harness and check if there is no related message on
the EICAS or on the CMC.
If some message appears when the harness is shaken, check
this harness for continuity and check also the connectors.

ENGINE START PROBLEMS

NO ROTATION
During an engine start attempt there is no rotation or the engine
does not reach sufficient N2 to start ignition (14% N2).

MOST PROBABLE CAUSES

A. Air Turbine Starter – ATS.
B. Starter Control Valve – SCV.
C. Cross bleed valve.

QUICK CHECKS
A. According to the pneumatic power source (APU or external
pneumatic power source), check for these EICAS messages:
APU BLD VLV FAIL and/or CROSS BLD FAIL and do the
applicable T/S.
B. During start procedure, check the start control valve manual
control position. If it is in the OPEN position, replace the ATS. If
it is not in the OPEN position, do the troubleshooting for the
start control valve and/or pneumatic system.
C. Do an engine start procedure with manual override of the start
control valve (AMM MPP 80-10-02/201).
D. If FADEC download is required, do not de-energize the aircraft.

See Embraer FIM TASK 72-00-00-810-809-A

OCT 2004 71-1

ENGINE DOES NOT START (NO LIGHTOFF)
There is no significant ITT increase within 5 seconds after fuel flow
is introduced on an engine start attempt.

MOST PROBABLE CAUSES

A. Ignition system.
B. Fuel nozzles
C. Fuel Pump Metering Unit – FPMU.
D. FADEC.
E. Combustor chamber brackets.

QUICK CHECKS
A. For cold weather, do an engine start procedure with the
IGNITION switch in the ON position (dual ignition procedure).
B. Check for CMC messages on the MFD (AMM MPP 45-45-
00/201).
C. If the failure is associated with FADEC channel A, do an engine
start procedure with FADEC channel B. Use the FADEC
RESET/ALTN switch to select the FADEC channel.
D. If FADEC download is required, do not de-energize the aircraft.

TASK 72-00-00-810-803

71-2 OCT 2004

STAGNATED (HUNG) START
Lightoff is achieved, but the engine is slow to reach idle or does not
reach idle.

MOST PROBABLE CAUSES

A. Observe N2 rotation at fuel introduction.
If N2 > 28% at fuel introduction:
1. (For Pre-Mod. SB AE3007A-75-019) – CABV/CABCV
2. FPMU/Fuel Nozzle

If N2 < 28% at fuel introduction:

1. APU/External pneumatic power source.
2. Starter Control Valve – SCV.
3. Aircraft bleed system
4. Air Turbine Starter – ATS.

QUICK CHECKS
A. If the residual ITT is higher than 210°C (410°F), do an engine
dry motoring to decrease the ITT and then do a new engine
start.
B. According to the pneumatic power source (APU or external
pneumatic power source), check for these EICAS messages:
APU BLD VLV FAIL and/or CROSS BLD FAIL and do the
applicable T/S.
C. Check for CMC messages on the MFD (AMM MPP 45-45-
00/201).
D. Do an engine start for the other engine to make sure that the
pneumatic power source is operational (APU, external
pneumatic power source).

OCT 2004 71-3

E. During start procedure, check the start control valve manual
control position. If it is in the OPEN position, replace the ATS. If
it is not in the OPEN position, do the troubleshooting for the
start control valve and/or pneumatic system.
F. Do an engine start procedure with manual override of the start
control valve (AMM MPP 80-10-02/201).
G. If FADEC download is required, do not de-energize the aircraft.

See Embraer FIM TASK 72-00-00-810-803-A

71-4 OCT 2004

HOT START/TORCHING ON START
A hot start occurs when the ITT is above the temperature normally
seen during engine starts, or is above 800°C (1742°F). A torch start
occurs when a flame is seen in the exhaust duct during an engine
start.

MOST PROBABLE CAUSES

A. ITT residual above 210°C (410°F).
B. Fuel nozzle.
C. FADEC.
D. Ignition system.
E. FPMU.
F. Combustor chamber brackets.

QUICK CHECKS
A. If residual ITT is higher than 210°C (410°F), do an engine dry
motoring to decrease the ITT and then do a new engine start.
B. Check for CMC messages on the MFD (AMM MPP 45-45-
00/201).
C. If FADEC download is required, do not de-energize the aircraft.

See Rolls-Royce FIM CSP34064

TASK 72-00-00-810-801

OCT 2004 71-5

START ATTEMPT INTERRUPTED
All parameters are normal but the start attempt is being interrupted
as soon as the START switch is released from start to RUN
position.

MOST PROBABLE CAUSES

A. ENG START switch.

QUICK CHECKS
A. Check for CMC messages on the MFD (AMM MPP 45-45-
00/201).
B. If FADEC download is required, do not de-energize the aircraft.
