Applications of Nanofibre in oils related pollution

 nanofibre which has the capabilities in oil–water separation, sorption and has the
oleophilic and hydrophobic surface can be used as a tool to combat either oily
wastewater from domestic household and industrial activities
Properties of Nanofibre
1. Surface Morphology
a. Either smooth, rough and combination of these textures. The fibre with rough
surfaces facilitates the adhesion of oil to the surfaces of the fibres, thereby
enhancing adsorption
2. Voids Among Fibres
a. key factor in obtaining high sorption capacity
b. A rapid sorption rate can be obtained if interconnected voids with a properly
sized structure exist between these polymer fibres, which can hold oil.
c. via capillary action through the porous interior of the nanofibres
3. Porosity of the fibres
a. Fibres that have porous cross sections also have increased the specific surface
area, which enhances the ability of the fibres to absorb oil
4. Diameter of the fibre
a. Fibres with small diameters and high porosity have a high capacity for the
sorption of oil due to the significant number of interconnected voids
b. The small diameter of a fibre also favours the adhesion of high-viscosity oil
c. Fibres that have larger diameters have larger void spaces between the fibres,
and they have comparatively low capacities for the sorption of oil
5. Surface tension
a. reducing tendency of a liquid surface which allowing the liquid surface to
resist an external force.
b. Surface tension differences between water and oil may cause a surface with
superhydrophobic characteristic to become oleophilic or superoleophilic
c. Water and oil was found to have surface tension of 72.8 mN and less than 30
mN m− 1 respectively
d. characteristic of any solid surface which possesses surface tension between oil
and water, may show hydrophobicity and oleophilicity characteristics.
6. Hydrophobicity and oleophilicity
a. superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity behaviours of a fibre is related to
the natural properties of the raw material which is polystyrene and a high
surface roughness of a fibrous film
b. superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity decrease if there is a reduction in
the absence of the porous nanofibre structure
c. easier to collect sorbent with hydrophobic and oleophilic characteristics during
oil spills clean-up operation because they can be disposed appropriately
therefore avoid further environmental contamination.
