BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction.

The Internet provides us with information and also entertainment, and can be accessed

using phones, tablets, laptops, and desktop computers. Some of the benefits and services it can

give are Emails, blogs, social networks, instant messaging and include keeping in touch with

friends, transferring funds, engaging with entertainment and assisting with educational needs

(Akhter, 2013). The benefits of the internet are many indeed, and this cause it to be widely

researched.

People use internet for variety of purpose, as said above. You might need to use the Internet

extensively for your work, for example, or you might rely heavily on social networking sites to

keep in touch with faraway family and friends. However, the act of spending a lot of time online

only becomes a problem when it absorbs too much of your time, causing you to neglect your

relationships, a person’s work, and schooling, as well as other important things in your life. If you

keep repeating compulsive Internet behavior despite the negative consequences in your offline life,

then it’s time to strike a new balance. Internet has enlightened the human society by providing

information, transforming knowledge and facilitating for communication. However, it created its

own problems and internet addiction.

Statement of the Problem

The researchers would like to investigate the following:

1. What is the level of student usage and addiction on computers among SHS Students

of Magsaysay National High School?

1. What is the academic performance of the Senior High School Students of Magsaysay

National High School?

2. What is the effects of the addiction levels of Senior High School Students to their

Academic Performance?

Objectives of the study

This study entitled “Negative Effects of Computer Addiction on School Performance,

School Year 2008-2009” wanted to attain the following objectives:

1. Gauge the level of student usage and addiction on computers among SHS Students of

Magsaysay National High School

2. Determine is the academic performance of the Senior High School Students of

Magsaysay National High School?

3. Determine the effects of the addiction levels of Senior High School Students to their

Academic Performance?

Statement of Hypotheses

This will use the following hypotheses in this study:

Ha: There is an association between computer use and addiction among the Senior High

School Students of Magsaysay National High School

 Ho: There is NO association between computer use and addiction among the Senior High

School Students of Magsaysay National High School

Significance of the Study

This study, when fully materialized will be of value to the following:

The teachers can better guide the students as regards to their academic performance when

the results of this study will be materialized.

Student’s performance will be improved provided that they will be guided accordingly

with the results of this study.

Principals, for this can enlighten them of the concepts of the relationship of Computer

addiction and academic Performance of the students in the local setting.

Sociologist and Anthropologist, since this study at hand has something to do with

relationships and functions of individuals in a community. With the said, they can devise an

educational material that has the possibility of correcting the possible occurrence of the said

scenario in the future.

Executives of Department of Education, like that of the Principals, can enlighten them

of the concepts of the relationship of Computer addiction and academic Performance of the

students. With the said, he or she can reflect on the veracity of the concepts in connection with the

people of the institution under his/her wards; hence, he can foster chance in the area of his concern

having the said concepts contain herein. Furthermore, they can also issue memoranda/s that is

aimed at correcting the said in the field offices.

 Other researchers who wished to further investigate the issue of relationship between job

satisfactions to work performance with the aim of improving the said scenario in any given

institution present in the world.

Scope and Delimitation

This research at hand will follow the following scope and limitations:

I. Scope

This study will bear the title: Negative Effects of Computer Addiction on School

Performance, School Year 2008-2009. It will be conducted in Magsaysay National High School

campuses which includes both extensions and annexes which has Senior High School Curriculum

Offering during School Year 2018-2019. All of the students will be given their fair share to air

their thoughts and concern in this research.

II. Limitations

The Honesty of the respondents in answering the given research instrument will be

delimited in this study knowing that it is very intangible and the proponent cannot gauge such

among the respondents. In addition, Lack of knowledge among the respondents on the

information/s needed to pursue with this study at hand will also be considered as one of the

limitations.

Theoretical Framework

This study is widely influenced by the work of Dr. Tausif A. Rajput entitled “Effect of

internet addiction on academic performance of medical students” where he found out that

Excessive internet usage by medical students may lead to internet addiction which may adversely
affect their academic performance. Parents/teachers need to take preemptive measures to avoid

this and to remain vigilant especially for students whose academic performance is persistently low

as internet addiction may be one of the reasons.

Conceptual Framework

This research work will use the research paradigm below to determine the relationship

between Internet usage and Addiction to the Senior High School Students of Magsaysay National

High School and their Academic Performance during the School Year 2018-2019.

Operational Definition of Terms

The following are the terms being used by the proponents in this current study. It is

understood that we used operational definitions in this current study.

Internet will mean the World Wide Web that is being used for communicating and sharing

information by the citizens of the world, among other usage such as gaming.

Gadgets will refer to the materials that is used to access the internet such as laptops, tablets,

android phones among others.

Levels of Addiction will refer to the intensity of usage of computers and reliance on

computers.

Academic Performance will refer to the General average of the Students in the Previous

and Present Academic Year
