CHAPTER I
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction.
Measuring of academic performance of students is challenging since student performance

is product of socio-economic, psychological and environmental factors (Syed Tahir Hijazi, 2006)

which is just one of the most current factors affecting the performance of the students as pointed

out by researchers. There is an ever growing interest in the concept of factors affecting the

education in the country with prime objective of maximizing profit by delivering high quality

education that produces well-educated, skilled, mannered students according to needs and

requirements of the dynamically growing market. This has been the concern of many researchers

in the worldwide setting as regards to the concern of uplifting the level of learning to the youth

which will in turn inherit this planet. However, to date, there are still no research/es that tackles

the schema of this in the local setting of Occidental Mindoro, particularly in the Municipality of

San Jose; this is the thing that the author wished to shed light into to further give clarity of the

concepts affecting the performance of the students, considering the local scenario of San Jose,

Occidental Mindoro. Specifically, this research, is focused mainly on finding out the notable

factors affecting the performance of the local group/s of students being catered by three private

schools in existence in the Municipality of San Jose which are Divine Word College of San Jose,

Philippine Central Islands College and lastly Holy Family Academy of San Jose.

Note that, there are two groups of students as generally perceived i.e. those who improve

and those who don’t improve. In this research, the proponent wanted to investigate into the very

causation as to why such scenario of improvement and non-improvement happens in the learners

catered by the three private schools, as mentioned; the purpose of this is to serve as a miniature

mirror to view an even greater sphere of student populace, the factors affecting their performance
in either positive and negative ways. In view of this, it is expected that this study can contribute to

find out the factors, which are responsible for student’s inelastic behavior towards study along

with identifying those factors, which help a student to make progress in his studies. A survey will

be conducted to collect information and responses of students, regarding factors affecting their

performance.

Research Locale
This study will be conducted in the Municipality of San Jose considering the three private

schools in the area that offers Junior High School Curriculum namely Divine Word College of San

Jose, Holy Family Academy and Philippine Central Islands College which is located in Barangay

8, San Roque and Barangay Central Respectively. Two of the said schools are being run by the

Catholic Church while the latter is mainly a privately owned and controlled school.

The municipality where the said schools are located borders the Municipality of Magsaysay

to the south and the Municipality of Rizal to the North. It is a first class municipality in the province

and can almost reach the state of being a city. The economic activities of the people living in San

Jose are diverse and varied; it is mainly farming in the rural areas and business in the urban areas.

The locality has a well-developed transport and communication network

Statement of the Problem

Significance of the Study

We are living in this present era of globalization and technological revolution where

education is considered as a first step for every human activity. It plays a vital role in the

development of human capital and is linked with an individual’s well-being and opportunities for

better living (Battle & Lewis, 2002). Hence, we must make this education at its utmost feasibility

in the school and we must impart the greatest possible level of education towards the learners we

are catering in schools. Furthermore, knowing that education, if made proper ensures the

acquisition of knowledge and skills that enable individuals to increase their productivity and

improve their quality of life. This increase in productivity also leads towards new sources of

earning which enhances the economic growth of a country (Saxton, 2000). Wherefore, it is best

that we must find out soon enough the possible factors that may affect the possibility of imparting

such good quality of education among the students we cater in schools.

This research therefore, considering that it aims to ensure the quality of teaching and

learning, when finished will be of pertinence to the following:

The National Agencies Concerned with Education will be imparted with greater light as

to the causal relationship of learning with other factors that may affect it. Therefore, they can make
plans for interventions to alleviate the effects of the said in the students of every schools under its

wards. With this, they can impart knowledge among the pool of teachers in the field on how to

deal with cases such as this when it occurs in their very stations.

Divine Word College of San Jose Administration, being a local education giving

institution in the Province of Occidental Mindoro will also benefit from it in such a way that it can

provide a clearer view on how to push administrative decisions as regards to the factors affecting

the academic performance of the students; hence, they can also push necessary actions on how to

deal with the situation.

Divine Word College Faculty Members and Staff can also be enlightened by the result

of this research endeavor and can make necessary actions to correct the situation.

Parents and Guardians, upon reading the results of this research can be better equipped

with knowledge on how to improve their children’s academic performance. They can also make

necessary moves ensure that their children will benefit from their current schooling by considering

the wisdom that will be imparted by the herein research.

The Students, being the center of any educative process will also benefit from this research

endeavor in such ways such as self-corrections as well as facilitated corrections by people

surrounding them that has been well equipped by the concepts of this current research.

People of the Academe shall reap benefits from this as reference for correction for errant

students as well as a form of content materials that can be used for teaching. The concepts in the

herein works, when duly validated can also be quoted by some writers in their works that can in

turn make way for better teaching and learning of concepts of subjects such as Sociology,

anthropology as well as education subjects.

Non-Government Organizations that are deeply involved in education and it’s allied

fields and services can be guided by this literature as regards to making projects and proposals

having an aim of improving the quality of learners that is deemed to shape the future of this planet.

Other Researchers may find benefits in this research as a prototype and/or additional

source of information in their quest to pursue studies and researches that has parallelism with this

research material

Scope and Delimitation

This research at hand will follow the following scope and limitations:

I. Scope

This study will bear the title “Factors Influencing Divine Word College’s Junior

High School Students’ Performance as Basis for Intervention. School Year 2018-2019”.

And will be confined solely to the Junior High School Students of Divine Word College

of San Jose for the School Year 2018-2019

II. Limitations

This study shall be confined solely to the premises of Divine Word College of San

Jose during the School Year 2018-2019; other schools, although may have similar concerns

and issues with the said institution will not be given weight in the herein research. Other

concerns that will be subject for delimitations are the honesty of the respondents in

answering the given research instrument as well as their possible lack of knowledge among

the respondents on the information/s needed to pursue with this study at hand that may

have the possibility to affect the results of this study.

\
Theoretical Framework

This research endeavor has been deeply influenced by the works of authors such as Hansen,

Joe B.2000 who stated that: All of the research reviews support the hypothesis that student

performance depends on different socio-economic, psychological, environmental factors. The

findings of research studies focused that student performance is affected by different factors such

as learning abilities because new paradigm about learning assumes that all students can and should

learn at higher levels but it should not be considered as constraint because there are other factors

like race, gender, sex that can affect student’s performance. In addition to this, other noteworthy

factors also has been considered in the modern setting such as Social Media and Addiction thereof

(Osharive Peter, 2015). Furthermore, this is also influenced by other noteworthy and somewhat

common scenario such as absenteeism and other behavioral problems among the students (Naila

Khalid D/o Khalid Mehmood, 2017)

Conceptual Framework
The works will use the research paradigm below to determine the factors that affects the

performance of Junior High School Students of Divine Word College of San Jose for the School

Year 2018-2019.
