Lyrics: Through the waking dawn, I will stagger on, chasing wishful stars who linger on the far horizon. We learn how to sing each part of a
basic triadic harmony (3 note chords) then use it to harmonize a lead vocal melody. A powerful tool for singing in a capella groups and

Saher, question? Should the harmony singers be following the harmonies of the individual
chords throughout the song? For example, if the first chord is major followed by a minor, does a
3 part harmony also follow on the 3 respective voices of the associated chords?

good listening..I started from your video on the 3rd Harmony technique...and now it's getting
easy the more I practice..I can even sing C notes jumping an octave without reference..I can tell
between minor and major by the feeling of happiness and sad...thanks man

This video is really helpful because: 1) You explain what's happening clearly and simply
(theory). 2) You show the notes coming along and where they fall on the scale (visual aid). 3)
You provide support for the note the student is singing by playing it on the piano. 4) You provide
the other vocal parts, so the student can hear where his/her note falls in the chord. 5)You allow
the student to try each part. I'm impressed! I've been asked to be the 3rd back-up singer in a
Steely Dan cover band. Though I've had my own jazz combo for a few years, now, I haven't sung
harmonies in a while. I'm a bit intimidated by filling that 3rd voice role, especially for
sophisticated harmonies like those Steely Dan wrote. The other 2 singers have already chosen
which line they'll sing, so I have to be the detective and find/fill in a 3rd part. Any pointers?
Thanks again for a great video!

Question: let's say you don't know what note the song is in, but you want to harmonize. Are you
saying that we have to sing the lyric higher than the melody or lead singer?

this was a good video, it explains how to do the harmonies well with oohs and ahhhs as the
background vocals while sustaining only one note as the harmony, but is there a difference if you
were to follow the lead vocals with the harmony? it's much easier to hold the c note for a 4 beat
measure than it is to harmonize with each individual note from the lead line you used in this
video you know? I've got it down for the full measure oohs and ahhs as the additional vocals but
say if I tried to harmonize each note of the lead melody, it always seems to turn out like a church
choir singing the national anthem. how do i work with this info to make it sound epic like
journey and not so stale and stright forward and generally weird sounding?

a good example for this would be boston, piece of mind, when they song the main chorus " I
understand about indecision I don't care if I get behind people living in competition all I want is
to have my peace of mind" the harmonizing vocals switch back and forth like " I undestand about
indecision, oooohh, people living in competition, oooooh" did they follow the same techinque,
just with more notes involved when following the lead melody more strictly?

Can you do a video on singing bass?
REPLY

Strato Incendus1 year ago

That was awesome! Have you considered making a part about four voices, as it is usually done in
most choirs (bass, tenor, alto, soprano)? Since I'm not particularly a fan of the sound of seventh-
chords, at least not all the way through an entire song, I always have to double a note when doing
four voices, and hence that fourth voice doesn't have much room to go besides being merely the
octave to one of the other voices.
