NOTES on LAP LENGTH OF SPLICES OF HYSD REINFORCING BARS
as per IRC 112 2011-Code of Practice for Concrete Road Bridges.
(Clause 15.2.3, 15.2.4, 15.2.5.1 )

(1) WHY ALL THIS EXERCISE ?

1) In Steel Drawings or General Arrangements Drawings of all types of Bridges, it is specified that the Lap
Length for Splicing of Reinforced bars shall be arrived as per IRC:21- 2000 (since with drawn) or IRC:112-
2011.

2) The Field Engineers may not follow the same due to various reasons.
3) This presentation may guide or aid the Field Engineers to calculate Lap Lengths for Splicing of Reinforced
bars or directly use the table for arriving the Lap Length for Splicing.
4) If any errors or mistakes are observed kindly don't hesitate to call any one of us, and we feel happy to
note the same from you and make the changes to correct values.

5) Interpolated values are not recommended in Lap Length of Splices in the code IRC:112-2011.
6) The TABLES presented here can be used for " STANDARD PLANS FOR SINGLE DOUBLE & TRIPLE CELLS BOX
CULVERTS as in SD/101".

(2) ASSUMPTIONS
1) A = Area of reinforcement required.
s.req

As.prov = Area of reinforcement provided.

As.req ≤ As.prov (Design requirement for Structure safety )

As.req = As.prov ( Assumed, since the Field Engineers may not know "Area of
reinforcement required")

(3) CONDITIONS
1) Favorable bond Conditions :

2) Unfavorable bond Conditions :

(i) All other conditions are considered as unfavorable bond conditions.

vv narayana vvnhighways.blogspot.in
3) Clear Longitudinal distance between staggered LAPS should not be less than (0.30* Lap length).
4) Minimum Lap Length shall be Ls.min
Maximum of (i) 0.30*α1 x Lb (ii) 15 times Dia. Of Reinforced bar or (iii) 200 mm.
(With the assumption As.req (i) 0.30*α1 x Lb is always satisfied )
= As.prov
5) For HYSD bars exceeding 32 mm diameter additional rules as per clause 15.2.6 shall be followed.
6) For lapping of Bundled bars rules stipulated in clause 15.2.7 shall be followed.
(4) FACTORS EFFECTING THE LAP LENGTH OF SPLICES.
1) Concrete Grade ( M 20, M 25, M 30 etc. ……..).
2) Grades of Reinforcing Steel ( Fe 415, Fe 415 D, Fe 500, Fe 500E, etc…… ).
3) Diameter of Reinforcing Steel ( 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 16 mm , etc…… ).
4) Area of Reinforcement required (As.req ).
5) Area of Reinforcement provided (As.prov).
6) Bond Conditions ( Favorable bond Conditions or Unfavorable bond Conditions ).
7) Percentage of Lapped bars relative to total Cross-sectional Area (<25 %, 33% of 50%..).

(5) EFFECT OF ABOVE FACTORS ON LAP LENGTH OF SPLICES.

1) LAP LENGTH decreases with increase of Grade of Concrete.
2) LAP LENGTH increases with increase in Grades of Reinforcing Steel.
3) LAP LENGTH increases with increase in Diameter of Reinforcing Steel.
4) LAP LENGTH decreases with Area of Reinforcement provided increases.
5) LAP LENGTH increases with increase in Percentage of Lapped bars relative to total Cross-sectional Area.
6) LAP LENGTH in Favorable bond Conditions is lesser than LAP LENGTH in Unfavorable bond Conditions.

(6) WORKED OUT EXAMPLES IN CALCULATING LAP LENGTH OF SPLICES.

10 Worked out examples are presented here to guide.
The examples are presented with all possible combinations to reflect all possible
conditions
1) Different DIAMETER of STEEL ::-> 8 mm, 16 mm, 25 mm … … … up to 50 mm.
2) Different GRADES of CONCRETE ::-> M 25, M 30, M 35, M 45 and M 50.
3) Different PERCENTAGES of LAPPED BARS ::-> 25 %, 33 % and 50 %.
4) Different GRADES of STEEL :: -> Fe 415, Fe 500 and Fe 600.
5) Different BOND CONDITIONS ::-> Favourable & Unfavourable.
The result is checked with stipulated conditions for MINIMUM LENGTH of
STEEL (i) 0.30* α 1* Lb (mm) (ii) 15 * φ (mm) and (iii) 200 mm and the value is
MODIFIED accordingly.
