Technical Note: How to manually update AV Definition

Description

This article explains how to manually update AV Definition and Engine for a FortiGate unit

Solution

1) Log in to the Customer Service & Support web portal at https://support.fortinet.com, and select the 'Download' option, followed
by 'FortiGuard Service Updates'.

2) Download the files for AV Definition ("Virus Definition") paying attention to select FortiGate device and the correct OS version and
model of the device.

3) The current AV Definition version in a FortiGate unit can be checked from either the Web GUI or via CLI.

WEB GUI:

Go to System > Config > FortiGuard > "ATP Services" (AV Definitions)

CLI:

Run the following command:

# diag autoupdate versions

and look for "Virus Definitions".

4) Updating the AV Definition has to be done through the Web GUI. Go to:

System > Config > Fortiguard > AV Definitions > [Update].

Click on "Update" and select the file which was previously downloaded from the support site.

For example (updating AV Definition):

Clicking on "OK" will result in the message 'Updated successfully' which means that the AV Definition has been updated successfully:

Verify the AV Definition has been updated by comparing the result with the AV Definition shown in the step number 3.
