ACTION RESEARCH

Proposed Title: Games: A Motivation for Improving Students’ Speaking Proficiency

Name of Researcher: Herbito, Ayn Kira S.; Josol, Florli Beth Zeruiah R.
Position: Unemployed; Volunteer; Teacher I
Institution:

A. Problem Identification

1. In my current position, I am concerned about the speaking proficiency of my

students because I observed that they have difficulties in explaining their
thoughts and ideas in English for they are less motivated.

2. In order to prove my concern or issue, I need to gather information or data on

their audio-recordings, recitation, reading and speech performances.

3. From my experience in using different tools and techniques, I found out that the
most important, urgent, the most doable and relevant problem or issue that I
needed to focus on is on how the students express their ideas orally with
proficiency.

4. I found the following as viable solutions to the problem or issue:

- oral summary
- games
Because these are appropriate strategies to solve the problem and these
strategies are not usually used.

5. However, among the identified possible solutions, we decided to implement

games
Because we find it rare, fun and engaging for the students as well as the
teachers.

6. Research Questions and Hypothesis/Assumptions

The problem of this action research is stated as follows:
- What is the effect of games in improving students’ speaking proficiency?

Provide a description of the identified problem. How did the researcher identify
the problem? Describe the persons/students who were affected and the possible
causes of the problem. What are the goals for improvement?
My tentative answers to the problem are:
- To motivate learners to speak. Games introduces of competition into
language-building activities.

- To increase creativity and courage; they have more discussion with their
friends.

7. Purpose and Significance of the Study

This action research is conducted mainly to improve the oral skills of the
students.

This will benefit the following:

1. School – This study is beneficial to the school for this study helps the
school to improve their curriculum and incorporate active teaching
strategies in class
2. Teacher - This study is to help the teachers create their lesson plan using
the intervention stated to improve the teaching – learning process in their
own respective classrooms in terms of enhancing oral communication
skills.
3. Students – This study helps students by improving their ability to speak
through implementing correct grammar, vocabulary and pronouncing
English words correctly.

8. Data Collection and Analysis

Discuss how will you collect and analyze the data.

1. The data in the form of qualitative method are got from the observation done
by the teacher during the teaching learning process about the whole activities
and the students’ behavior. The observation is done by making notes about the
activities during the teaching learning process. Besides that, the observation is
also supported by audio recording during the teaching learning process.

You may use the sample template given as your guide.

Proposed Title: (HOW CAN I HELP MY STUDENTS IMPROVE THEIR COMPREHENSION

SKILLS IN MATHEMATICS?)

Name of Researcher: Group 5, Table 1

Position: Faculty
Institution: Kolehiyo ng Pantukan

A. Problem Identification

10. In my current position, I am concerned about the low performance of my

college students especially in my Mathematics class.

Because every time I give lecture to my students, some of them got low
results and some are not performing well.

11. In order to prove my concern or issues, I need to gather information or data on

their results of their daily quizzes, attendance, assignments, class
participation, and major examinations.
12. From my experience in using different tools and techniques, I found out that the
most important, urgent, the most doable and relevant problem or issue that I
needed to focus on is the comprehension skills in solving problems.

Based from the following pieces of evidence:

a. poor results in quizzes and examinations
b. low participation in board work

13. I found the following as viable solutions to the problem or issue:

a. Coping Strategies
i. Appraisal-Focused
ii. Problem-Focused
iii. Emotion-Focused
b. Remedial Class
c. Improve the teaching strategies
d. Revisit the Test Questions Guidelines
Because I believe that through this suggested solutions, the performance of
students in Mathematics will improve.

14. However, among the identified possible solutions, I decided to implement the
Coping Strategies and Revisiting the Test Questions Guidelines.

Because through Coping Strategies, I would be able to let the students

understand the subject matter, likewise by revisiting the test questions
guidelines, I would be able to identify whether the questions I made would
be reliable and viable to the level of understanding of my students.

15. Research Questions and Hypothesis/Assumptions

The problem of this action research is stated as follows:

I assume that after employing the actions/solutions on the concerned
students, there is an observable positive development on the performance
of some students in mathematics in terms of test results and class
participation.

Provide a description of the identified problem. How did the researcher identify
the problem? Describe the persons/students who were affected and the possible
causes of the problem. What are the goals for improvement?

One third of the class is low performing in Mathematics. Some of them got
low results in examination and class participation. In spite of my effort and
teaching strategies that I have employed still some of them are not doing
well. I presumed that Mathematics is the most difficult and hated subject.

My tentative answers to the problem are:

1. I will identify the Coping Strategies of my students to fit in the
strategies that I am using in teaching Mathematics.
2. I will revisit the Test Questionnaires for me to know what parts
of the test are difficult.

16. Purpose and Significance of the Study

This action research is conducted mainly to help the students improve their
comprehension skills in solving Mathematical problem.

This will benefit the following:

4. School
5. Teacher
6. Students
7. Guidance Counselor
8. Parents

Because the result of this Action Research would contribute positive result
to identify students who are the main concern of this study.

17. Data Collection and Analysis

Discuss how will you collect and analyze the data.

1. Data is taken from the Class Record, Student Consultation and

Intervention Record, and Diagnostic Result.

You may use the sample template given as your guide.
