This directory has been compiled by ITDG in response
to the growing number of requests for the names and
addresses of organizations actively involved in the
promotion, development and application of appropriate
technologies around the world.
There are in existence a number of directories
compiled b y various international organizations.
(These include: UNEP, Institutions and Individuals
Active in Environmentally Sound and .Appropriate
Technologies (UNEP, Nairobi, 1978; Jequier N,
Appropriate Technology D i r e c t o r y ) (ilevelopment
Centre of the OECD, Paris, 1979); C o m m o n w e a i t h
Secretariat, Rural Technology in the Commonwealrh:
A Directory of Organizations (CS Food Production and
Rural Development Division, London, 1980).) Tnese
are of limited value in responding to such requests, in
part because they are quickly out of date and
restrictive in their coverage, and in part because they
are too expensive to provide on a widespread basis.
This directory is published in such a way as to
provide up-to-date comprehensive information which
is freely available to all those requesting it.
A large proportion of the organizations listed in
this directory were referred to in JTDG’s r e c e n t
review of institutions (Whitcombe R. and Carr M.,
Appropriate Technology institutions: A Review;
Occasional Paper No. 7 ITDG, London, 198-f
these organizations have been included because of
their known role in supporting, either directly or
indirectly, the development a n d a p p l i c a t i o n o f
appropriate technologies. Since researching this
paperr other AT institutions of consequence have
become known, and these are also included in the

directory.
Given the speed at whi,ch new AT institutions are
established (by one account, this is at a rate of one
new institution somewhere in the world every week),
there will clearly be a need to update this directory.
An annual revision is planned. Corrections,
information on omissions, and other suggestions from
readers are weicome.

The directory is divided into four major sections

A. Country
B. Regional
C. International Institutions and Networks
D. International Support Agencies

In the ‘Country’ section, most of the listed

organizations are specialized AT institutions, with
major interest and involvement in one or more
functional activities. Most are concerned with their
own country (or part of it), although some, particularly
those located in developed countries, have interest and
involvement in other countries. T o g i v e s o m e
indication of their scope and purpose, the
organizations listed in the ‘Country’ section have been
coded according to their geographical and major
functional coverage (minor functional activities being
excluded). The codes are:
