Regular verbs in past

Rules for changing verbs into past


form.

1. The verb ends in “E”; just add


“D”

Close---Closed
2. The verb ends in “Vowel + Y”;
add “ED”
Play -----Played
3. The verb ends in “Consonant +
Y”; change “Y” into “i” and add
“ED”
Study--------Studied
4. Other forms; just add “ED” at
the end
Visit----------Visited
Watch--------Watched
Finish---------Finished
5. Cases of double consonant
Stop-----Stopped
6. British English usually doubles
“L” if it is at the end of a verb;
after that add “ED”
Travel------ Travelled
Cancel--------Cancelled
Model--------Modelled
 Except verb “BE” (which is
“Was” or “Were”); all verbs are
the same in simple past form
for any subject.
