Name: E.P.

Description of Focus Student: E.P. is an English Learner. It has only been about 5 months since she came
to the States, so she is comfortable using her home language. On the Initial English Language Proficiency
Assessment of California (IELPAC), she ranges in the intermediate level. She scored a 3 on her oral
language (well developed) and a 2 on written language (somewhat to moderately developed). Meaning,
she has moderate speaking skills while struggling with writing and reading. Based on my observations
and interactions with E.P., she is able to understand chunked information when she listens attentively.
However, she does not persevere when it comes to reading. She would skip the word problems on the
homework, either stating that she could not understand them or that she disregarded it because it
looked like the directions. Nonetheless, E.P. has demonstrated fluency in some math concepts when
they were being taught in my class, so her content level is more advanced than her peers. She explained
that the math curriculum pace in Korea is faster.

Student Name: E.P. Subject: Math 7

Lesson Description: The entire unit (Expressions & Equations) will be stretched out in a span of
five weeks. It will be divided into three sections: expressions, equations, and
inequalities. The first lesson of this unit is on order of operations, as it is
crucial for students to have a strong foundation in the order of operations
before proceeding into algebraic expressions and equations.
Lesson Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.EE.A.1 Apply properties of operations as strategies to
add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients.

Lesson Goal/Objective: Students will be able to find the value of an expression by using the correct

Name: T.H.

Description of Focus Student: T.H. is eligible for special education services under Other Health Impaired
(OHI) due to attention processing deficits. His lack of sustained attention interferes with his academic
success in the general education setting. His IEP provided accommodations such as:

- Have structured and clear instructions

- Establish eye contact when giving directions and instruction
- Provide hands-on learning experiences and visual representations as much as possible
- Break assignments into small “chunks”
- Talk through math problems
His standardized state test scores for math indicates that he has not met the standards. However, T.H.
does not lack conceptual knowledge. His low grade in my class is due to his poor work ethics. When he is
focused, he is able to grasp the material.
