Compared with Issue 01 (2016-02-29) of GBSS18.1, Draft A (2016-12-30) of GBSS19.1
includes the following changes.
2 Overview
2.1 Introduction
During network deployment in environments such as rural areas, islands, and deserts, the Abis
interface generally uses satellite transmission, and the bandwidth lease costs are enormous.
Therefore, reducing transmission bandwidth of base stations becomes the operators' major
concern.
2.2 Benefits
The AMR Transmission Bandwidth Compression feature reduces usage of Abis transmission
bandwidth for CS services by 15% to 30%, thereby reducing transmission bandwidth lease
costs and the total cost of operation (TCO) for operators.
This feature applies only to AMR CS services. This feature provides considerable benefits
when CS services with little or no PS services are being processed. This feature produces the
best effect when the AMR coding rate is 4.75 kbit/s. This feature produces a negligible effect
on the OML and CSL. This feature does not apply to the RSL or OMCH.

3 Technical Description
NOTE
TRAU is short for transcoder and rate adapter unit for speech frames. PTRAU refers to packet TRAU.
Figure 3-1 shows the formats before and after multiplexing. Before multiplexing, each AMR
speech frame carries one IP header and one PTRAU header. After multiplexing, the payloads
of multiple speech frames carry one IP header and one PTRAU header.
The BSS buffers and multiplexes single-user AMR speech frames. The system then sends the
multiplexed packets when either of the following conditions is met:
l The buffer duration is greater than or equal to the actual value of the multiplexing delay
specified by AbisUserFrameMuxDelay(BSC6900,BSC6910).
l The number of buffered frames reaches the maximum number of multiplexed frames,
which is equal to the configured value of
AbisUserFrameMuxDelay(BSC6900,BSC6910) plus 1.
For details about SID frames, see Discontinuous Transmission and Discontinuous
Reception Feature Parameter Description.

5 Network Impact
6 Engineering Guidelines
6.3 Planning
RF Planning
N/A.
Network Planning
l The Abis interface uses IP transmission.
l The BTS clock meets the following requirements:
– The GPS clock is used when neighboring cells exist and internal clock is used when
no neighboring cells exist. This is done to prevent clock packets from occupying
transmission bandwidth.
– If the IP clock is used, the scheduled synchronization mode must be used to ensure
that synchronization is performed during off-peak hours. This is done to prevent
synchronization from occupying transmission bandwidth.
l The bearer network enabled with this feature meets the QoS requirements listed in Table
6-1.
When a GTMUa functions as the main control board of the GBTS, these counters are not
supported. In this case, the average length of IP packets sent by the BTS can be obtained
only from traffic statistics provided by satellite equipment.
– The IP/UDP header length is 28 bytes.
– The IP/UDP header length after compression is determined by satellite equipment.
Hardware Planning
l 3900 series base stations for the GBTS (except BTS3900E and BTS3900B) support this
feature only in non baseband extension mode.
l The eGBTS supports this feature only in non baseband extension mode.
l The following RF modules support this feature: RRU3922E, RRU3926, RRU3928,
RRU3929, RRU3936, RRU3938, RRU3939, RRU3942, RRU3952, RRU3952m,

Using MML Commands
Run the SET BTSOTHPARA command with AMR Transmission Bandwidth Compress
Switch set to ON(On) and the following parameters set based on the network plan: Abis
Single User Speech Frame Multiplex Delay, Abis SID Frame Send Period, and BTS
Signaling Plane Message Compress Switch.
When configuring the AMR Transmission Bandwidth Compression feature on the CME, perform a
single configuration first, and then perform a batch modification if required. Configure the parameters of
a single object before a batch modification. Perform a batch modification before logging out of the
parameter setting interface.
To modify objects in batches, click on the CME to start the batch modification wizard.
For instructions on how to perform a batch modification through the CME batch modification
center, press F1 on the wizard interface to obtain online help.
----End
The BTSM.GBTSIP function subset is not supported when a GTMUa functions as the main
control board of the GBTS.
The unit for measurement period is minute.
As the signaling links over which messages are compressed are different for the eGBTS and
GBTS, the observation results of occupied transmission bandwidth for the eGBTS and GBTS are
also slightly different.
Expected result: After the AMR Transmission Bandwidth Compression feature is
enabled, less Abis transmission bandwidth is used at the IP layer than before.
6.4.5 Deactivation

The difference between the number of BTS-to-BSC SID frames and the number of
Um interface-to-BTS SID frames is greater than before.
l After the signaling-plane message compression function is enabled for the GBTS, trace
CS domain OML messages over the Abis interface on the BSC LMT to query the
periods for sending messages listed in Table 3-1.
Expect result: After the function is enabled, the message sending periods are consistent
with those provided in Table 3-1.
l After the signaling-plane message compression function is enabled for the eGBTS, trace
CS domain CSL messages over the Abis interface on the BTS LMT to query the periods
for sending messages listed in Table 3-2.
Expect result: After the function is enabled, the message sending periods are consistent
with those provided in Table 3-2.
