We are interested in buying items similar to our stock listed
here, and in anything unusual not suggested by our cata-
logue. We specialise particularly in art and literature relating
to the Mimeograph Revolution, the Beat Generation, and the
counterculture, as well as underground fiction and poetry
generally.

The books offered here comprise the London collection of au-
thor and filmmaker Chris Petit (1949-), including books set in
London, books about London, books in which London is a cen-
tral character, and books by London-based writers.
Largely the product of the 1980s and 1990s school of
bookdealing led by Martin Stone, the collection diverges from
the usual or accepted view of the city, with a number of the ti-
tles as invisible now as they were thirty years ago. The haphaz-
ard bookshops which were once the books’ natural repository
have nearly all gone, and few people were actively looking for
this material in the first place. Now the books exist (if at all) in
warehouses and barns accessed via search engines. It is hoped
that this catalogue might recover some of these lost and forgot-
ten titles.
That particular world of bookdealing is the one shown
in Iain Sinclair’s novel White Chappell Scarlet Tracings (1987) and
in Petit and Sinclair’s film The Cardinal and the Corpse (1992), star-
ring Stone, Driffield, Robin Cook (aka Derek Raymond), Michael
Moorcock, Alan Moore, Alexander Baron and Emanuel Litvinoff
amongst others. This collection carries frequent reminders of
Petit’s film work, with inscribed copies pointing directly back to
Cardinal and to his film Asylum (also with Sinclair, 2000).
Also included is the extraordinary working library for
his key novel Robinson (1993), a significant underground book
of the night, of drink, violence, sex, and alienation in the city.
Petit was buying books about Soho, the primary setting of Rob-
inson, when he met Sinclair, who was a bookdealer at the time.
(Sinclair’s pencilled pricing is frequent in these books, indicated
by the initials ‘I.S.’ in several listings below). In fact, Robinson was
originally planned to be a non-fiction project. The Soho library
which forms a prominent part of this catalogue was the founda-
tion for Robinson, in that it led to the abandonment of the docu-
possibly unparalleled.
What is fact and what is fiction in London and its litera-
ture are not clear cut, particularly, it seems, in Soho. The three
sections below – Fiction, Fact, Soho – are a deliberate challenge
to categorisation, and clear themes run through the whole list-
ing – the underworld of lowlife, crime, prostitution, loucheness
and drift, war, bedsitting, alienation and immigration, tramp-
ing and poverty.
During the preparation of this catalogue, a celebrity
campaign to ‘Save Soho’ was launched, recognising that the area
is not what it was. Although the place seems to retain a portion
of its lowlife charm (which is not quite the subject of the cam-
paign), nowadays unsanitised underworld Soho, and unsani-
tised underworld London for that matter, is probably best found
on the page. Petit’s collection was being formed when London
was barely an entity in literary terms, and when it was barely a
grouping in collecting terms. Now that the city is well branded,
the collection would be extremely difficult to reproduce.

Camberton – or Henry Cohen – had an un-
likely meeting w/ William Burroughs via the
‘archivist and Chelsea habitué’ Douglas Lyne,
one of his closest friends. As Iain Sinclair has
written, this ‘must have been one of the most
£30 fantastic conjunctions in literary mythology’,
& it was apparently recorded ‘on a creaking
reel-to-reel machine’.

seems though that he died in 1971 in St Albans.
Julian Maclaren-Ross adapted Marlowe’s first
book, I Am Your Brother (1935), for an unpro-
duced radio drama; he met Marlowe, though
£9 could only speculate about his nationality, &
recounted that Marlowe had worked in Hol-
lywood. A pavement artist earns sudden fame
doing sketches on the variety stage, but finds
himself accused of murder & back drawing
film stars on his pitch near Hyde Park Corner.

£5 a pencilled monogram with the year 1936, & in
pen the poem ‘Septentrion, dieu de l’amour’ by
Raymond Radiguet. Facing these on the front
pastedown is a tipped-in postcard sent to Mey-
erstein at Grays Inn Place by ‘(Barbara and) J.
G.’. This is probably John Gawsworth and
£5 his wife Barbara Kentish. Despite a previous
seller’s implication that the verse is written by
Meyerstein, it looks from the handwriting as
if it has been written by Gawsworth. Also, the
latter’s postcard illustrates ‘Stèle de l’Enfant
Septentrion’ from Musée d’Antibes and refers
to the poem’s title, suggesting that he has writ-
ten the poem into this copy. Gawsworth has
had a tiring day searching for the museum,
£5 but says, ‘you may appreciate the result for
extra-illustrative purposes’. These purposes
are continued on p. 352 where there is a note,
apparently in the same hand, relating to the
following passage concerning ‘a Bacchante by
Etty’: ‘My [the narrator’s] friends declare it to
£5 be, oddly enough, a better likeness than any
portrait that has been painted of me hitherto,
£5 and desire a reproduction of it at the begin-
ning of this narrative.’ Bound in to this copy
is such a picture as frontis, w/ tissue-guard. An
interesting association copy, but blue cloth is
worn and soiled, w/ split to cloth at lower joint,
+ hinge gaping a little. Secure, however. Spine
faded. Some foxing + discolouration.

Published weekly (except for double issues) by
Time Out In London then Time Out Ltd., and
edited initially by Tony Elliott. Not a complete
run, w/ 79 issues not present (list available
upon request), but still a very representative
collection from a time when Time Out engaged
more with social and political issues than it
does now, and when its more appealing design,
like its content, was less inclined towards the
mainstream.
As Elliott explains in Jonathon Green’s
Days in the Life: Voices from the English Under-
ground 1961–1971, the magazine (1968–) was
founded as a hip What’s On, taking over from
International Times’ What’s Happening page
and from John Hopkins’ BIT, an underground
information exchange. The alternative society
acted as a stimulus to Time Out, whose listings
reflected the late 1960s creativity it promoted,
but the magazine was not dedicated solely to
that society. Michelene Wandor says: ‘I think
up until the final takeover by capitalism in
1981 Time Out was the survivor of the 60s. What
it did was very cleverly combine a democratic
open approach to cultural happenings, cul-
tural events with a political edge to them, and
soft-edged capitalism.’ Furthermore along
with poetry, film, dance, theatre, agitprop and
more, Time Out is of course a guide to what was
happening in London, and to an extent it is
synonymous with the city.
It is also more than a listings magazine.
Some of the subjects covered by articles and
interviews in this collection include: women’s
liberation and feminism, race relations and
immigration, justice, welfare, terror and war
including Vietnam, town planning and de-
velopment, queer issues, drugs and health,
squatting and accommodation, abortion, na-
ture and the environment, the river and ca-
nals, travel and transport, voting, the prison
system, funding, censorship, religion, cults,
technology, population, the media, conspiracy,
and loneliness and mental health. Specifi-
cally, there is coverage of the Oz Trial and the
case of the Angry Brigade and the Stoke New-
ington Eight. Cover stories feature Wilhelm
Reich, Kenneth Anger, Frank Zappa, Richard
Pryor, William Burroughs, Derek Jarman, the
Sex Pistols, J. G. Ballard, Hunter S. Thompson,
the death of John Lennon, disco, Bruce Lee, and Death of Ronald Chesney. Evans Brothers,
Ali versus Foreman, Gilbert & George, the Vel-
vet Underground, hooliganism, science fiction,
David Cronenberg, Soho, ‘snuff rock’, the Anti-
Nazi Carnival, Suicide, Bob Dylan, and more.
The run is from the collection of Chris
Petit, who is named as Film Editor from is-
sue 196 (1973) to about 481 (1979), with issues
482–3 not present. His involvement with the
magazine continued either side of these issues.
During the period represented by the maga-
zines offered here, cinema is said to have gone
through a golden period, and cinema is promi-
nent with regard to both listings and articles.
Petit himself, who was a prolific reviewer for
the magazine, interviews figures such as War-
ren Beatty, Milos Foreman and Jack Nicholson
(One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest), Nicolas Roeg
(The Man Who Fell To Earth), Robert Altman, and
Harvey Keitel. He writes about subjects includ-
ing paranoia in Hollywood cinema, exploita-
tion film, Jean-Pierre Melville, Bob Dylan’s
Renaldo and Clara, Robert Aldrich, and for the
10th anniversary issue his 10 worst films.
Included with the collection are 9 assorted
issues from 1984–5, which include pieces on
censorship and the sexual backlash, Eddie
Constantine (Lemmy Caution in Godard’s Al-
phaville), Robert Mitchum, Quentin Crisp, Da-
vid Lynch’s Dune, subterranean London, and
Martin Scorsese on Powell and Pressburger.
Petit writes about John Belushi, and inter-
views Bryan Ferry and Jack Nicholson again.
As a side-note specific to this catalogue,
there is an early interview with Iain Sinclair in
issue 106 concerning his Albion Village Press.
Early issues of Time Out are difficult to find,
and to form a collection of this size would be
extremely hard. The issues not present are
spread evenly across the run, though only 5
are missing from the first 200 numbers. The
condition is generally very good, with to-be-
expected light wear to the stapled wraps. Oc-
casional creasing and a very occasional anno-
tation, but mostly clean. It is likely that the
majority of copies of Time Out were treated
without care, and probably discarded after
each week covered.
