Using Machine Shorthand in Courtroom

What this module all about?


The main purpose of machine shorthand is its useful usage in courtroom. A
stenographer should be a master of this skill to deliver a clear copy of the content of a hearing
session. This module will train you to become a competent stenographer when you are in a
courtroom.

What to learn from this module


Upon completion of this module, you will be able to :
1. Apply new principles in writing machine shorthand (words ending –BODY and -THING)
2. Write commonly used law terms and phrases in machine shorthand
3. Develop speed in writing dictated materials
4. Participate actively in classroom discussion.

How to learn from this module


You will first take the pre test to measure your knowledge about the lessons and
this will let you know what the things that you still need to know are. Activities and self check
ar e also presented after the lesson to give an immediate assessment on what you have
learned. At the end of this module, you will have to take the post test to evaluate the learning
that you gain from this module.
Before taking up this module, be sure to have in your hand a representation of machine
shorthand keyboard. If you have the real machine, you’re very much lucky to put into practice
what you have learned with the real thing. If not, you have to be resourceful.

There are some phrases that are commonly heard in a hearing session and are being
used by stenographers. These phrases are written in machine shorthand in a simpler way
rather than writing every single words of it.

Activity #37

Divide the class into two. Each group will write a short skit of a
hearing session using the words and phrases discussed in this lesson. Then
they will exchange their works and each group will have to write the skit in
machine shorthand. Present it on the class.

For every error made, this will be deducted from the total score of 20
points.
