Senior Bombers See Two Wins and One Loss in Latest Play

home game vs Neepawa
Farmers. The games open-

Bombers’ Matt Saler, as-

Russ Huyghe. Two goals
from the Farmers followed
closing the first period 2-1
in favour of Neepawa.
The Bombers fought
back in period two and
scored four more goals.

Annual Family Fun Spiel

O n Sunday, December
30th, a dozen rinks
took part in the second
annual Minnedosa Curl-
ing Family Fun Spiel at the
local curling rink. Teams
came from Minnedosa and
surrounding area includ-
ing Shoal Lake and Bran-
don. Approximately 31 of
the 48 curlers were un-
der the age of 15, with the
youngest being five-years-
old.
The bonspiel consist-
ed of three games for each
rink in the one-day event.
Each game was one hour
or four ends in length,
whichever came first. No
scores were tracked during
the day and every curler
walked away with a prize.
Along with the curling,
there were raffle prizes, a
blind gift game and several
kids enjoyed tobogganing
behind the rink. Several
local businesses were gen-
erous enough to donate
to the raffle table or offer
great discounts to the club.
“It’s a fairly fast
paced  day with short
games so kids seem to

Ye Old Trib 2018 A Busy Year For Minnedosa
1889 – Citizens of this community are urging the pur-
chase of town fire fighting equipment.
1899 – The public school is so crowded, the school
board is forced to ask payment for non-resident pupils.
1909 – The Minnedosa Hospital is expected to be ready
for occupancy in a few days.
1939 – Newdale residents lost $17,000 in a second di-
sastrous fire.
1949 – Town Council will draw-up a necessary bylaw to
provide a municipal doctor for the town.
1959 – Minto Council has applied for provincial gov-
ernment assistance to hire five men to work a total of
480 man days. The men will be employed cutting scrub,
painting schools, repairing civic buildings and other
things of civic nature.
1969 – Canada’s Manitoba Distillery, which opened
in Minnedosa in September, has merged with Melcher’s
Distilleries in Quebec. As a result the local plant is ex-
pected to double its production capacity and the plant
will be expanded to produce three million proof gallons
or spirits per year.
1979 – Town Council has passed a bylaw authorizing
a rate increase in water rates as approved by the Public
Utilities Board. Effective January 1st, the quarterly water
rate will jump from $15,00 to $31.90.
1989 – Minnedosa Rodeo Society Inc was presented an
award as committee of the year for 1988 from the Mani-
toba Rodeo Cowboys’ Association. Rodeo Society Vice
President, Ken Woodcock accepted the award on behalf
of Minnedosa.
1999 – The Minnedosa RCMP Detachment and High-
way Patrol will now be known as part of the larger, Yel-
lowhead Detachment along with Wasagaming, Elphin-
stone, Shoal Lake and Hamiota RCMP.
2009 – This Spring, Minnedosa Home Hardware will
open a showroom for major appliances in the former
North American Lumber building on Main Street.

A s we kick off a new year, we take time to reflect
back over the past 12 months and the hap-
penings in our community. From time to time we
hear someone say there is nothing happening in
Minnedosa, well by flipping through the pages of the
2018 editions of the local community newspaper, we
can definitely prove that statement incorrect!
First off, the good news stories of the year. Skate
the Lake and Minnedosa Minor Hockey earned a
provincial Travel Manitoba Partnership Award while
Rayna Topham and Dirty Lake Outfitters were hon-
oured with Westman Tourism Award. At the local
level, Dan Johnson received the Dedication to Sport
Award at the Sports Dinner. Local athletes also cel-
ebrated a number of local, regional and provincial
achievements and titles throughout the year.
Minnedosa celebrated a number of community
growth success stories in 2018, the biggest one being
the completion and opening of the new medical clin-
ic, the Dr. Ajai Khandelwal Primary Care Centre. A
number of new construction projects were also seen
including the start of three new multi-unit housing
complexes. Two of these are located by the old fair-
grounds with another one at the old hospital site. We
were also fortunate to welcome back numerous resi-
dents to the completely revamped Town View Manor.
The community daycare announced its plans to
expand its building by the arena and our commu-
nity welcomed a number of new business ventures
throughout the year. Some of these new businesses
include Farmhouse 50, Serendipity Paint Company
and Theradream Therapeutics.
2018 marked a number of anniversaries for
our community. The Town of Minnedosa and The
Minnedosa Tribune both celebrated their 135th an-
niversaries. Basswood Women’s Institute celebrated
100 years of service, Minnedosa Rotary Club marked
its 75th anniversary and the Minnedosa Lions Club
celebrated four decades of community service. Alan
and Barb Dalrymple and family celebrated 30 years
of their greenhouse business, Rockin’ the Fields of
Minnedosa celebrated 15 years of its successful Au-
gust long weekend music festival and the 50+ Centre
celebrated 10 years of service. May 4th, 2018 marked

the 70th anniversary of the spillway collapse and
downtown flood.
Some exciting changes took place in civic elec-
tions across the province and locally, Pat Skatch was
acclaimed as Minnedosa 40th mayor and the third fe-
male to hold this position since 1883. Doug Dowsett
was acclaimed as the new Reeve for the Rural Munic-
ipality of Minto-Odanah.
On the other hand, there were also a number of
unwelcome news stories in 2018. The biggest of the
year across Canada was the Humbolt Broncos bus
crash which affected hockey families, fans and com-
munities across the nation. Locally, three people lost
their lives in a Valentine’s Day car crash on High-
way #10 southwest of town. In August, Cpl. Graeme
Kingdon was wounded in a shooting incident near
Onanole.
On the business front, Minnedosa sadly experi-
enced a few business closures over the past year and
joined others across the country who mourned the
loss of Sears and Greyhound bus services.
These are just a few or the many newsworthy
happenings and events that filled The Tribune’s pages
throughout 2018 and we look forward to the exciting
news we will get to report to our readers this year.
With today’s edition, the first of 2019, The Tribune be-
gins another year of recording our community’s rich
history.

Food Inspection Agency.
One has to wonder just
how much they are con-
cerned about their de-
clared mandate versus
keeping Canada’s food
industry happy, and mi-
nimising regulation. There
are many instances where

fixable by legislation, so
it’s high time for our regu-
lator to play hardball with
the manufacturers, be they
domestic or otherwise.
Then there are some
very dubious practices
which our food indus-
try engages in, which di-
rectly threaten the health
of those who consume
their products. A recent
investigative piece by The
Guardian (29 Dec. 2018)
highlights the growing evi-
dence of the health risks of
using nitrites to cure meat
products like bacon and
ham. When ingested the
nitrites produce nitrosa-
mines, which are known
carcinogens. A coalition of
U.K. scientists and parlia-
mentarians is likening this
situation to that of the to-
bacco industry, when the
real truth came out. Profes-
sor Chris Elliot (Food Sci-
entist) says the evidence
indicates these chemicals
result in 6,600 bowel can-
cer cases each year in the
UK (Four times the death
toll from car accidents). A
2015 report by the World
Health Organisation
linked processed meats to
they need it to combat
botulism etc., and that it
is not that harmful. How-
ever there are alternatives.
Some Parma ham pro-
ducers have not used ni-
trites for 25 years. Various
processors have more re-
cently adopted nitrite free
substitutes, so clearly it is
possible. Where is Health
Canada in this important
health debate?
Then there is the is-
sue of overuse of antimi-
crobials (antibiotics) in
meat production in this
country. Historically an-
tibiotics have been used
for livestock production in
three ways: for treatment
of disease, for prevention
of disease, and for growth
promotion. It has been a
widespread practice here.
In 2014 1.5 million kilo-
grams of antimicrobial ac-
tive ingredient was used
in Canada. Much of that
used as a feed additive for
growth promotion.
The well documented
concern is the link between
excessive antimicrobial
use, and the development
of the so-called “Super-
bugs” (C.difficile, MRSA,
VRE, etc) that have serious
implications for human

An Exciting Update From Refugee Sponsorship Committee

I n September 2018, after
two years of work, the
South Mountain Refugee
Sponsorship Committee
[SMRSC] was informed
that the newcomer fam-
ily had been interviewed
in Africa by the Canadian
government representa-
tives and was approved to
come to Canada. The fam-
ily arrived to Erickson in
mid-November 2018 after
their long and arduous
journey from several Afri-
can countries.
Some of you may have
met Yonas, Nordos and
baby Anna at various com-
munity functions over the

discover ways to control
cravings, and to maintain
healthy changes!

Health Promotion Coordi-
nator, with PMH is one of
the facilitators who leads
Craving Change™ in the
region. “We live in a so-
ciety where outside fac-
tors greatly affect our eat-
ing. The Craving Change™
program takes a look at
our eating environments
as well as explores how
emotions and learned be-
haviours influence the de-
cisions we make around
food,” Hyra says. “This is a

formed before and during
the service. Special read-
ings were given by Frances
and Christine Walker, with
the Angels, Shepherds
and Magi surrounding
the manger where Baby
Jesus lay. Many old fa-
vourite Christmas carols
were sung and enjoyed. A
bounteous pot-luck sup-
per followed in the lower
hall with a wonderful so-
cial time finishing off our
church Yule season. The
congregation is very ap-
preciative of all the hard
work that goes into this

Nicholls Helping with

Hurricane Michael Clean-up Moving Snow

Minnedosa, is on the
move again – this time
heading to Florida to mop-
up after the ravages of
Hurricane Michael in early
October. Previously, the
retired school teacher had
been in Houston last April
to re-build after Hurricane
Harvey had torn through
that area.
Nicholls’ taste of relief
work, through Samaritan’s
Purse (SP), had gone over
well with him, and so he’s
headed back for two weeks
at the end of January. This
time though, he’ll be tear-
ing house walls apart,
spraying on mould disin-
fectants, and cleaning up
rubble instead of re-build-
ing and painting. “I’m not
sure what to expect,” he
said. “I have heard from
others that it’s tough man-
ual work, and the need is
endless.”
Next week then, Nich-
olls jets to Panama City,
Once there, he’ll head to
the Panhandle town of
Wewahitachi (the size of
Minnedosa, apparently)
where Samaritan’s Purse
has established a base
camp at a Baptist Church.
He’ll work as part of a crew
of about 12 from all parts of
Canada.
The military-style base
camp means routine and
regimen. Wake-up is usu-
ally at 5:30 a.m., breakfast
at 6 a.m., an assembly at
7 a.m., and then head out
to the work-site. Supper
is served at 6 p.m., an as-
sembly at roughly 7 p.m.,
quiet time at 9 p.m., and
lights-out at 10 p.m. The
modest accommodations
of Men and Ladies’ dorms
may include the luxury
of bunk beds, or just have
mattresses on the floor.
“We’ll make do whatever it
is,” Nicholls said.
With disaster relief,
SP was busy in 2018. There
were tornados in central
Wisconsin, another hurri-
cane encroached the Caro-
lina coast, then Hurricane
Michael. In all of these
situations, SP immediately
set up volunteer help cen-
tres and began clean-up
work and re-build efforts.
The faith-based orga-
nization has main offices
in Calgary and Boone,
North Carolina. Frank-
lin Graham, the son of
the late evangelist Billy
Graham, leads SP. Many
people know the group
through their “Shoebox”
campaigns in Third World

Garbolinsky Feels Right at Home on the Ice

F rom the age of 19, Jean
Garbolinsky has been
no stranger to the curling
ice. Moving to Strathclair
with her husband Gary, it
was definitely the winter
thing to do. “Everyone in
town curled, so I figured I
would to” explained Gar-
bolinsky. And the rest as
they say, is history!
Moving to Minnedo-
sa in 1975, Garbolinsky
has been a part of the
Minnedosa Curling Club
ever since in one capacity
or another. Bringing her
children up playing and
now her grandchildren,
this is definitely a family
sport.
Between regular
league curling, competi-
tive curling and coaching,
the winters were sure to fly
by for Jean, which is exact-
ly how she liked it. In the
80’s Jean and Donna Dill-
abough started up a junior
curling league. Starting off
with grades four to six and
then grades three to five,
Jean loved the coaching
aspect. A love that she con-
tinued on until recently,
as she dedicated six years
to coaching and cheer-
ing on the Jennifer Curle
rink. “I started coaching
these young girls when
they were in grade eight

I absolutely loved my time
with them, they are a great
group of girls. I have al-
ways been interested in the
junior curling. Being able
to see the kids come up
through the ranks and how
they progress. Just overall
watching them develop as
a person as well as a curler,
what a treat.”
Jean’s competitive
curling career has not been
for the faint of heart, hav-
ing seen her fair share of
ups and downs. On several
occasions Jean’s rink made
it to the finals during pro-
vincial bonspiels, loosing
shy of taking home the tro-
phy. In 1990, Jean played
third to Gerri Cook’s rink,
loosing the final in the
Manitoba Scots in Bran-
don.
A highlight for Jean is
winning the Senior Ladies
Provincial in 2008, which
moved her on to the Ca-
nadian Senior Curling
Championships in Prince
Albert Saskatchewan. “We
had made it to finals two or
three times for the Cana-
dian and lost out, so it was
such a treat to finally make
it!” exclaimed Jean. “The
Minnedosa Curling Club
has always been so sup-
portive of their competi-
tive curlers. When we won
