Introduction

This research project report is a part of my MGMT 630 course at NYIT Vancouver. I made

an online research, went through different articles and websites to know more about the

economies of two countries India and Canada. In this report I have compared the Canadian

and Indian economies on the basis of global, ethical, political, physical and societal (GEPPS)

indicators. The impact of internet on the two economies has also been studied and explained

in this report. This paper also explains how these nations define capitalism and how it has

affected their economies during the past few years. It also focuses on the economic growth

and personal freedom in these two nations and how they should work for the betterment of

their economies and all other aspects.

I chose India and Canada for the comparison as I was born and brought up in India and have

worked with different MNCs there, and currently I am living in Canada so this made me keen

to know more about the economies of these two countries in various aspects.

Similarities and Differences

Undoubtedly, India and Canada are two different countries with almost everything different

between them, but they do have some similarities if we talk about these two nations. Talking

about the history of these two nations both India and Canada were once ruled by British many

years ago. This constitutes to a major similarity between both the nations. Britishers took the

control of trade in both the countries and invaded them for their influence on world’s trade

during those times. In Canada it was for fur and in India it was for spices. Coming to the

second similarity between these two nations is that both have experienced nationalist’s

movement at some point in their histories. We can find two groups of people in these

countries. In Canada it is the English Canadians and the French Canadians. Whereas, in India

it is the Hindus and the Muslims, this led to conflicts and resulted in formation of a complete
3

different country what we call ‘Pakistan’ today. The only difference is that Pakistan became a

separate country from India but, Quebec is still a part of Canada.

Cultural Comparison

If we compare the cultures of India and Canada, they are diametrically opposite to each other.

As a coin has two sides, both cultures all have some merits and demerits. Indian culture is on

one side a mix of diversities in customs, rituals, traditions, language, etc., and it varies from

region to region within the country. It is one of the oldest and a combination of various

cultures and traditions.

On the other hand, Canadian culture is quite advanced and open as compared to the Indian

culture. The norms, beliefs, values, traditions, customs and practices are greatly inspired by

cultures of this world as Canada has a very high number of immigrants living in here.

Moreover, the Canadian culture is a mixture of all the different cultures from all the countries

all around the world.

The following are the major differences between Indian and Canadian Culture

1. Indian Culture has a variety of religions like Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Christianity,

etc. while in Canadian Culture the people mostly belong to Christianity.

2. In Indian Culture, joint families are common. Conversely, In Canadian Culture, small

families are there.

3. The traditional Indian outfit is worn in Indian Culture. In contrast to Canadian culture,

there is no such specific traditional outfit.

4. A variety of Folk, Classical music is preferred in Indian Culture. On the other hand,

Canadian Culture promotes Hip-Hop, Jazz, Blues, Rap, Heavy Metal and Rock music.
4

5. Hindi is mainly spoken in Indian Culture but in the case of Canadian Culture, English

and French is spoken in a high ratio.

6. Indian Culture is not that more open as compared to Canadian Culture.

7. Indian Culture gives more importance to society as compared to an individual,

however in Canadian Culture, society does not take part in the life of an Individual.

Effect of internet usage on Economy:

Internet is widely used all over the world today, talking about its usage in India and

Canada and its impact on their economies I found that in India it has grown over the past few

years. Indian population adapted internet at a faster pace today it has approximately more

than 500 million internet users. Also for Facebook and LinkedIn India is the second largest

market in the world. The government has implemented the initiative of National Optic Fibre

Network and increased the internet users even in rural India. It is estimated that internet will

grow India’s GDP over 4 percent by 2020. E-commerce will generate over 17 billion USD by

2018. As we know a major concern in India is safety of woman. They have developed apps

like WithU for this concern. We can see positive internet impacts today in India like more

online activities replacing the traditional offline procedures, better outreach, improved

decision making and improved standard of living. When making buying decisions people

look for information online and buy it online at a cheaper price. We can see online shopping

increasing at a rapid rate in India. Overall internet has impacted India and its economy in a

positive way.

In contrast, internet is also widely used in Canada since decades. No doubt, the technology

and the devices are much easier to use now than it was few years ago. More than 84% of the

population in Canada owns a smartphone today. According to a survey, the use of devices
5

and internet has increased to 69% among the senior age group. Majority of the Canadians

believe that their lives are better because of the technology.

Capitalism

Under Capitalism the wealth and ownership of the means of production is into

fewer hands. In Canada small producers, farmers and traders are left with no choice from

bigger capitalist firms. Capitalism creates more private wealth but also leads to poverty and

unemployment. The modern capitalism in Canada is suffering from crisis. There are cycles of

boom, crisis, depression and recovery. The capitalist system has become derogatory now and

it has failed to satisfy the growing needs of people.

Conclusion

Both Indian Culture and Canadian Culture are right at their places. There is a lot to

learn from both the cultures. For last few decades, Indian culture has been influenced by the

Canadian culture as well .We can see many immigrants coming from India to Canada for

their education and jobs. Indians are adopting the merits of the Canadian culture like

cleanliness, equal rights for both men and women, open mindedness etc. which helped in

removing the shortcomings of Indian culture. Similarly, Canadian culture is also getting an

Indian touch regarding Indian cuisine, outfits, traditions and yoga.
