Area of a Circle

If we know the radius or the diameter of a circle, we can find the Area. We always have
to square the
radius before we
multiply by  .
Area Formula r 2 means r  r
so
A = r 2
A  r 2 means A    (r  r )
  3.14

Sample Problems:

1 What is the Area of this circle?

4 in
_________

Think about it:

Which is given, the radius or the diameter?

So, what is the radius? 4 in.

Work it out:
Work it out:
1. Write the formula.
2. Plug in the numbers.
Step 1: A =
= r2
Step 2: A = 3.14(42)
3. Square the radius. (Multiply radius x radius)
4. Multiply to get the answer.
A = 3.14(16)

5. Label the answer with the correct measurement. Step 4: A = 50.24 in2

This answer makes sense because 3 x 16 = 48.

 is just a little more than 3, so a little bit more
than 54 makes sense.

2
What is the Area of this circle? 6 in
2 _________
d ÷ 2 = r
Think about it:
Which is given, the radius or the diameter?

So, what is the radius? 6/2=3

So the radius is 3 in.

Work it out:
Work it out:
1. Write the formula. A=
= r2
Step 1: ____________
2. Plug in the numbers. A = 3.14(32)
Step 2: ____________
3. Square the radius. (Multiply radius x radius) A = 3.14( 9 )
Step 3: ____________
4. Multiply to get the answer. A = 28.26 in2
Step 4: ____________
5. Label the answer with the correct measurement.

This answer makes sense because: This answer makes sense

because 9 x 3 is 27 and is a little more than 3.
