CHAPTER 9, LESSON 2, EXTRA EXAMPLE

Extra Example 3 Rewrite Before Finding Square Roots

Solve 4x2 – 144 = 0.

SOLUTION
4x2 – 144 = 0 Write original equation.
4x 2 = 144 Add 144 to each side.
x 2 = 36 Divide each side by 4.
x = ±√
36 Find square roots.
x = ±6 62 = 36 and (–6)2 = 36

➧ The solutions are 6 and –6. Check both solutions in the original
ANSWER
equation.
CHECK ✓
Substitute 6 in the original equation: 4(6)2 – 144 =? 0
4(36) – 144 =? 0
144 – 144 = 0 ✓
Substitute –6 in the original equation: 4(–6)2 – 144 =? 0
4(36) – 144 =? 0
144 – 144 = 0 ✓
Both 6 and –6 make the equation true, so 4x2 – 144 = 0 has two solutions.
