7.3. SOCIAL ANALYSIS.

The southeastern sector of the City of Milan is characterized by prominent boundaries

within its urban fabric. These boundaries have caused critical fragmentation between the urban,
peri-urban and rural tissues in the area.
The current analysis was done as part of “Energy and Urban Planning Workshop” related
to a wider area, but where the OpenAgri epicenter has a relevant role. The Sharing Cities district
of Porta Romana was the framework of the research. However, since the information plotted is
also relevant for the OpenAgri case, it is pertinent and enriching to show.

The maps represent the socio economic levels and the existing uses and services,
allowing the determination of the types of population. The area is characterized by a lack of social
integration due to segregation, lack of connection between the city level and local centralities and
lack of continuity in linear centralities.
There is an interesting richness in terms of uses, which are localized in a segregated way.
Also, the barriers (physical and social ones) that section the territory have a great relevance in
the general context.

7.4. URBAN SERVICE: CASCINA MOBILE.

Cascina Radice is an Urban Service (proposed for the Energy and Urban Planning
Workshop) that consists on a path of existing cascinas interconnected in a city of Milan that host
and educate citizens while allowing the development of productive activities.
Based on a thematic tour, each cascina have a unique identity but also is part of a whole
system. The Cascina network focuses on the empowering of the existing farmhouses to integrate
them into a collaborative network, through the development of dynamic paths.
There is an interconnectivity through three channels: site (people goes to the Cascina) –
Cascina mobile (Cascina goes to the people) – app (data of the cascinas in the network).
The idea of Cascina Mobile is that the idea of the farmhouse and its activities can go to
the neighborhood, enhancing citizen engagement and including vulnerable groups, through the
sharing of knowledge and tools for the community.
