My Corner
Often our lives are difficult and too
busy for us to be able to digest so
much information that comes our
way every day. Consequently, more
often than not, we tend to overlook
information that, we feel, does not
directly impact us, Even when we
do pay attention, the information is
presented so matterof-factly that it fre
quently leaves us emotionless, unaffected,
and therefore unmoved to act.
I am a Croat, a Croat of Albanian ancqe
try, ln the last year, my world has tum-
bled down. My dear motherland
(Yugoslavia) is in pain. My family, my
friends, my people are suffering. I feel the
grief of loss of history, lives, and future.
What can I do to contribute to lessening
of this pain and grief? I can not fight,
even though that is what I feel I would like
to do sometimes. I can not tell the war-
ring peope to stop, they can not hear me.
But I feel I know what is right. lf I could
only motivate enough compassionate
people to pay attention, to act out their
consciousness, I will have fulfilled my
duV.
Thus, I decided to create this "Hrvatski
Glasnik" in order to bring my homeland
closer to you. lwill try my best to b-ring
you a news summary, some historical bit$;
odds and ends of our culture; and any
items that need urgent attention. My
hope is that you will be stimulated'by all
this and will identify more closely,with my
people. ln the process, I hop that you
can help my people and will also see a
reflection of your own life situation in their
destiny. This could bring us, the people
of the world, all blooer together and could
give us a chance to,'6tloid future calami-
ties like the one which has befallen my
countrymen and women.

DUBROVNIK - Croatian positions came
under attack by Serb force and the YU
Army stationed in Trebinje this morning.
The attack subsided at 7:2O however the
general alert is still on.
The city has been quiet in the afternoon
after this morning's attack on Zupa Dub.

Why are the planes returning empty?
On Friday, CNN showed a segment from
Sarajevo involving a tragedy for Sarajevo's
children who are dying due to the lack of
health care opportunities in the besieged
city. One young Sirl, practically a
newborn, will die by Sunday if not flown
out to a hospital to help with her failing
head. ln the meantime the relief planes,
15-20 of the big cargo planes daily, are
returning from Sarajevo empty. The UN
says that they can not bring anybody with
them in order not to jeopardize the whole
mission. ls there no heart for the children
at least?
What's happening in Yugoslavia, Part

It is easy to understand why a large num-
ber of Croats have experienced Yugosla-
via, both the "Old" (between the two world
wars) and the "New" (after the W.W,ll.), as
a foreign occupation state. Towards the
end of W.W.l. a strong movement to form
a new country of South Slavs developed.l
Many hoped that this would be a solution
to the "eastern question." Many Croats
did too. However, spite in of

A Testimony
I have to admit that this whole process of

Yugoslavism, For a long time I was in a
state of denial, I could not understand my
Croat friends and some of my family who
were so bitter about the Yugoslav legacy

My friends, this is serious. As I am writing
these lines, 300,000 people in Sarajevo
are dying and my home town, the ancient
city of Dubrovnik is
again being
bombarded.
The people of Sarajevo are stuck like rats
in their basements; dirty, hungry, and
cold, facing unforgiving bazookas, heavy
mortars, multiple rocket launchers; the
merciless killing machine of Serbian
aggrebsion. A few miles away, a tiny mis-
sion of UN observers, is desperately trying
to gain control of that precious track of
land called the Sarajevo Airport in order
to secure help.
I dedicate this issue exclusively to the
Sarajevo tragedy. ln the next issue I will
resume the regular layout.
To help you understand their situatron
am including a map of the Sarajevo
regron. Note that Sarajevo is fully
surrounded by hills (some of them quite
high). That is where the enemy's heavy
artillery is located thus projecting a strong
grip of control over the city. Citizens are
trapped in their own city. Just like in the
trmes of the medieval sieges, the people
of Sarajevo are facing tragic death by
starvation or annihilation.

fierce artiliery attacks yesterday. Serbian
irregulars on the Trebevic mountain
range opened anti-aircraft fire on Stari
Grad. One person was wounded from
sniper fire in Novo Sarajevo .......

(my friend in Dobrinja). She says that the

suburb. Some people escaped to Dobri-
nja which is just 1/4 mile away, some
were taken away, some died. She fears
they are next.

the sons and daughters of Sarajevo and
those who made this city what it will for-
ever remain, met in that improbable place
at the very dusk: Ugljesa Uzelac, the man
who was everything in Sarajevo, the
mayor, the first man of the Olympic
committee, president of "Bosna"2,
functionary and a real gentleman; a town

truly sports oriented Sarajevo; Davorin

a proclamation of the free city. Kemo,
Davor and Milan Stupar, using Goran's
lyrics, composed a song for the "city

from Palgio, Sarajevo is not your sta-
ble."l1 We,.agreed who will secure, with

clear,:that those planes will take with them

It is not manly and fighter-like, but it is not

nobody spoke this morning of this little
weakness, powerfully pushed by the
strings of the guitar. This morning these
men of Sarajevo again were wherever
there was a need to tighten up some
small screw in this huge mechanism
made of love for Sarajevo.
Looking, before the dawn, at Kemal,
Davorin, and Ugljesa, hugging each other
and singing, Goran Milic sort of com-
plained: "They did it again, prepared this
ugly, touchy scenario with which they
have been after me for months ... How
can I now explain to anyone that I saw a
Muslim, a Croat, and a Serb, singing to-
gether. Nobody wili believe me."
The worst is

three hugging men don't believe it for a
very simple reason were not that

comprehend why people would start kill-
ing each other and destroying what took
years and generations to build.
The answer to this 64{housand-dollar
question depends on who you ask. lf you
ask a Croatian nationalist, you might hear:
"Serbians want Grealer Serbia. We are
fighting for our selfdetermination and
against domination of the Serbian Com-
munist dictatorship" lf you ask a Serbian
nationalist, the answer may be: "We can
not forget W.W.ll when hundreds of thou-
sands of our brothers and sisters per-
ished at the hands of the Fascist Croatian
Regime. Now Croats want independence
and we can not live with them
- we are
afraid for our liv€s." An unbiased West-
ern observer might say: "They are just
squaring off their centuries old accounts."
lf you ask me, I would say: "l don't know.
It is so nonsensibal that it goes far be-
yond any reason. I listen to all sides and
in isolation they all make sense, but my
own experience is different."
So what really happened?, you might
persist. Unfortunately, no one will ever
know for sure. History just happens and
all we have is a variety of interpretations
of what happened. Sure, many Serbs
perished in W.W.ll, sure Croatia had a
puppet fascist state, sure there have been
plans for Greater Serbra. Sure it is the
Serbs who are now committing most of
the atrocities in Croatia and Bosnia-
Herzegovrna (B-H) which prompted US
Sec. of State Mr. Baker to speak of a hu-
manitarian nightmare. Sure there are old
accounts to balance out. But, my truth is
that it does not matter at this point, "who
did it". We must stop fighting first; stop at

almost nothing to defend ourselves.
When is the West going to realize
what is going on here?
Send the heroic Bosnian defenders mili-
tary aid and foodl Drop off food and
medical supplies, establish control of the
skies, and supply them with the means to
defend thenselves. meaning weapons,
heavy weapons. lt is foolish to think that
anything else rs going to stop the barba-
rism of Serbian hoodlums unfolding in
front of our very eyes. The people of B-H
have suffered enough.

What's New
This past week has been eventful. We
have seen another quickly broken cease-
fire, as well as more atrocities all over
Croatia and B-H.
Contrary to common beliefs, the war in
Croatia has not stopped. Considerable
territory of Croatia is still under occupa-
tion by Serbian irregulars from where they
launch attacks (Sibenik, Karlovac).
In addition, the border areas with B-H
have been continuously menaced from
across the B-H border. For example:
Almost daily, since about 18 days ago,
the city of Dubrovnik and surrounding ar-
eas are shelled from the Trebinje region
(a city in B-H, 29 km NE from Dubrovnik),
from the hills above The Dubrovnik River
fiust to the North of Dubrovnik), and from
the Konavli (the region 20 km to the
South) which are still under occupation.
ln one of next issues, I will discuss the
overall situation in Dubrovnik (together
with a map of the region).
Slavonski Brod (an industrial city on the
Sava River in the Eastern Croatra) and
other areas in its neighborhood (Zupanja,
Slavonski Samac) have been bombarded
by Serbian forces from across the river (in
B-H). The most recent attack came In the
form of two surfac+to-surface missiles
each carrying 2000 lbs of explosives.
They made craters $B meters deep and
10 meters in diameter. They killed three
children.
The Sarajevo situation is especially un-
nerving. After the most recent ceas+fire
has been broken, the most dramatic
news is the ultimatum given on Friday to
Serbian forces in B-H. Secretary General
of the UN, Boutros Ghali, has given a 48
hour ultimatum to the Serbian forces to
stop fighting-otherwise the Security
Council will have to reson to "other

ln tne last issue I started discussing the
question: "What's happening in Yugosla-
via." lt was suggested that there were at
least three different theories of what had
caused the Yugoslav tragedy: lhe Greater
Serbia theses, the centuries-old griev-
ances idea, and the Fascist Croatia syn-
drome
- the first espoused by the
Croats, the second by most of the west-
ern media, and the last by the Serbian
side. lt was also proposed that all of
them have some truth and some flaws'in
them. This is what I will be discussing in
the issues to come.
However, before proceeding with that, it
is necessary to have a brief overview of
what has transpired in the last two years
in Yugoslavia.
On April 22, 1990, Croatia had its first
multi-party election after the W.W.ll. The
Croatian Democratic Union won and its
leader Dr. Franjo Tudman was elected
president of Croatia.
ln August 1990, the Serbs in the Dalma-
tian hinterland erected barricades on the
highways and railroads inierrupting all
aspects of regular life in the region. They
started harassing Croatian police posts',

bellion against Croatia's legitimate
authorities.
On May 19, 1991 the citizens of ,Oroatia
voted rn an open referendum and d+
cided for independence.
On June 25, 1991 two (oLtt,of six) YuE+

constitutionally guaranteed, Federal Yu-

over their territories. ln Slovenia, the pre
tense was to "retain control over Yugoslav
borders", in Croatia it was to "protect the
endangered Serbian minority." ln two
days, over 60 people died in Slovenia.
A few days later the Yugoslav Army (Y.A.)
started bringing reinforcements from Ser-
bia. However, those reinforcements were
noi the regular troops but rather Serbian
reservists from Serbia.
The Y.A. undertook a complet€::,:tlansfoi.
mation into the Serbian Arrny. Some
claim that before the split between 70
and B0o/o of the Y.A. officer cofps was of
Serbian nationality. After that pqi,nf. most
of the unlisted were atso Serbs. That was
the start of the war of the Serbian Army
against the rest of Yugoslavia of the past.
The war in Slovenia was over in a week
or so. However, the Warr,rin Ctoatia;,whicn
is still a reality in spite of the ceasefire of
January 3;:1992, flared in full force.
ln a blitz-krieg style, Serbian insurgents
underr:the prot#ion of the Serbian Army
occupied lar$e poftisns of Croatia,
started the piogram of ;;ethnic cleansing"

commenced hb iattacks on bordering

Dubrovnik was first altacked on October
2, fully surrounded-water, electricity, and
other supplies cut off-and then heavily
bombarded on December 6. The three
month Serbian and Montenegrin siege,
pillage, and terror resulted in international
outrage. The world saw a beautiful his-
toric city go up rn flames and its oeople

bombardment over the phone.
Then, in March '1992, the people of
B'osnia:,:,:ahd'llerzegovina {BH) decided
that they wanted fUll independence. All
three republics, Slovenia, Croatia, and B
H, had been previously recognized by the
Eur,Opean Community and many other
countries around the world.
The,result of the war in the three re.
publie so far is ovel15,000 dead,
several tens of thousands of wounded,
4000,000 displaced persons and the
u,nknown destruction to the physical
assets of the three republics.
You have witnessed the most recent od-
yssey of the people of Sarajevo where
over 300,000 residents have been ex-
posed to untold miseries. ln the two
months of the siege, on average l Gl 5
people were killed, and 30-40 people
were wounded daily in Sarajevo. Food
ran out, people ate grass. And all that in
the middle of civilized Europe and in the
cily that hosted 1984 Winter Olympicsl?
Both the aggressors and the defenders
have their own theories of what went
wrong which is what I will discuss in the
next issue.

Herzegovina continues, a foreign military
intervention may turn out to be su-
perfluous. General Stevanovic, Air Force
Commander-rn-Chief, was right a month
ago when he warned of the bad shape

signs6 teeling abandoned ahd betrayed,
lacking a high quality commanding staff,
lacking discipline, frustrated due to
constant failure of wrongly conceived
plans, feeling the destructive influence
of an extremist ideology and a loss of po
litical authority in general - which turned
the potentially mighty Armed Forces of
the "Serbian Republic of B&H" into a
"paper. tiger". The strategy devised by
KaraOlii'd cabinet and his mentors
was anachronistic from the start: it
questionable whether it would have
brought results a hundred and fifty years
ago. Their obsession with the nation and
territories - just another mental disease -
has led them to total moral bankruptcy;
from that position military victory is
impossible. The tactically unnecessary
destruction of Sarajevo and Mostar, the
bloody ethnic purging of eastern
Bosnia, war crimes and the policy of r+
settling the population have turned
against them: their enemy's morale has
strengthened because it had no other
choice left; morale on the Serbian side
has been undermined to a critical level.

-Bosnian-Herzegovinian Muslims and
Croats have just one option: to fight to
the last man and the last bullet: the sav-
age ideology of Karadlii's forces and
their Chetnik image from bad domestic
war movies waived any thought of sur-
render. The current offensive of the
Croatian Defense Council (HVO) and the
B&H Territorial Defense (TD) are a logi-
cal consequence of a war based on errG
neous political hypotheses. Officials of
the Serbian Autonomous Region (SAO)
of Herzegovina's TD are complaining
that everything went wrong after the
Army left. More and more Croatian
forces have been arrivrng from Dalmatia
in the past ten days, and these troops
are said to be disciplined and well
equipped. News came from Germany on
fresh arms shipments to Croatia. Accord-
ing to our correspondents, the HVO is
planning to advance to the Montenegrin
border, but not further than that; to
unblock Dubrovnik and perhaps launch
a great battle for the Prevlaka isthmus
(between Montenegro and Croatia), but
is that is not certain; after the pacification
of Eastern Herzegovina, they are planning
to advance to Kupres in order to cut the
connections between the Kninska and
Bosanska Krajinas and isolate Knin,
which they are already shelling - for the
first time. The HVO and TD of the B&H
forces left Mosiar, heading down the
Neretva river valley in the direction of
Konjic; they took Bradina and lvanSedlo
and descended into the ZuJevina Valley,
through which the road leads straight to
Sarajevo. lf in Hadiii they meet the
forces advancing from Zenica and Vi-
soko, Karadli6's siege of Sarajevo is over.
The way to eastern Bosnia would be
open from that direction as well,
which would make operative the strat-
egy of breaking the strongholds of the
Serbian Armed Forces in B&H, destroying
communication between them and
creating small isolated "islands", which
seems to be the idea precisely.

Monday, 6/29
- Airport finally under
control of UNPROFOR. The first French
plane arrives in Sarajevo with technical
equipment. In New York, the UN Security
Council ordered 1,000 Canadian troops
into Sarajevo to secure the airport.
ln Washington, DC. President Bush now
declares that US would engage military
personnel in case they are needed.
Dubrovnik
- Day 29 of general alert, no
electricity, only sporadic water availability.
ln the afternoon several hundred mortars,
rockets, and tank grenades fell on the city
and surrounding areas. Four people died,
14 wounded (7 seriously).
Tuesday, 6/30 - Four more relief
planes arrive to Sarajevo. Three UNPRO-

and were starting to build a just social
system for all. I participated in the volun-
teer youth brigades which helped build
the country's roads, irrigation systems,
large industrial complexes. I felt that I had
participated in great victories of peoples
for their own emancipation. My country
championed the causes of all the small
nations in the world and was respected by
them. I was educated in Yugoslavia, there
I started my professional career as a
teacher (which is what I do now in the
U,S.). When I left in 1976, I left with a
strong desire to return one day and
continue living the dream.
ln June 1991, I suffered a rude awaken-
ing. The country which I loved and be.
lieved in was modally wounded. Her sys-
tem could not fool itself any longer. She
could really not tolerate the free spirit of
her own people and sent her deadly ma-
chine to extinguish it. That was the b+
ginning of the end of my dream. My
country, my motherland was dying. The
places I loved, the people I loved, suf-
fered. No more tranquillity in my home
town in the long winter evenings, no more
loud tourists in the hot summer af-
ternoons. No time for laziness in the long,
thick shades of the tall, proud pines of
Lokrum, the island of love and mystery,
near Dubrovnik.
Will there be new dreams for some new
generations? Will they be able to savor
the innocent moments of youth knowing
that there will be a tomorrow? Or are they
condemned to live without the dreams,
having been doomed to pay for the mad-
ness of their ancestors?

Serbian leader, Mr. Slobodan Milosevic.
His singular political slogan centered

1989 where the Serbs celebrated 600

It is becoming really offensive to hear la-
beling of both the Serbian aggressors

tions." lt seems to be a concerted effort
to minimize the injustices of terrorism
perpetrated in Croatia and &H by the
Serbian forces of aggression. lt is time to
stop it and call the evil by its proper

What's happening in Yugoslavia Part
5. My view
- past, a new national identities developed
Everyone in this crazy war in Yugoslavia,
the lands of the Southern Slavs and other
non-slavic peoples, feels that they
right, they are the ones with the right
cause, they are the ones who are left out
and have to fight for justice and their in-
alienable rights. All sides can claim
something, usually deeply rooted in his-
tory, which makes their actions justified.
However, as long as we call upon distant
history to justify aggressive behavior, we
can not find justice for the living. History
comes to us in the form of someone's
writing or legends or stories told from
generation to generation. lnvariably, we
can never find out what really happened,
but rather are forced to believe one or
another theory of what happened.
I propose that justice be sought based on
the memories of living generations and
without projections. The past should be
studied in order to learn about a possible,
not a certain, course of future events.
Ultimately, it is living people who create
their own history and seek justice and the
realization of their human rights for
themselves and the future, not
generations. lt's too late for them.
Case in point: Bosnia-Hercegovina. T:his
land has been independent in the past. lt
has also been under so manyiii:f.Oreign
rulers that it is hard to even list them all.

The only way to end this war is, if the vio-
lators do not stop on their own, make the
legitimate defense forces of the two states
capable of defending their countries and
eventually make the perpetrators give up
the violence. Give it up!

A Historic Agreement Between Republics
of Bosnia-Hercegovina and Croatia
Following is the essence of the friendship
and cooperation agreement between
Croatia and Bosnia-Hercegovina signed
on Tuesday between the Presidents of the
two states.

constitution of the state of B-H will be
based on the principle of full equality of
the three constituting peoples.

presently in Croatia.
Cease-fire is supposed to come into effect
tonight at 6:00 pm local time. Fighting still
rages throughout BH and some parts of
Croatia. Slavonska Posavina (in Eastern
Croatia, along the B-H border) is con-
stantly harassed by shelling from B-H.
Doboj region in Norlh Central B-H r+
ceived over 4,500 shells in last few days.
ln B-H Travnik, Bihac, Zavidovici, Livno,
Gradacac, and especially Gorazde heavily

Bihac (4 die). Croatia had a quiet day to-

Out of '109 municipalities, B-H Govern-
ment claims full control over 50, 11 par-
tially controlled, rest under occupation.
Fighting reported throughout BH espe-
cially along the West-East line from the
Serbian controlled regions of NW B-H and
central Croatia through theNorthern
regions of B-H. Evidently, the aggressor
still tries to establish a land corridor to-
ward Serbia.
Tuesday, 7/21 - Sarajevo airport open
then closed and opened again today.
Damage to the airpod facilities reported.
CBS repofts on a marriage between Mir-
jana, a Serb, and Damir, a Croat in Sara-
jevo today, Their theme song is: "The
more I think the less I understand." Could

Croatia and B-H entered into a military
cooperation agreement stipulating that if
the peace efforts do not succeed, they will
jointly expel Serbs from the territories.

Serbian irregulars opened heavy artillery
fire on the forests around Visegrad
(Eastern Bosnia) yesterday where 8,000
refugees from other parts of Bosnia were
taking shelter. Three people were killed in
the attack. ln the past two days 55 people
have been wounded in the area.

eral rejects the Security Council's recom-
mendation to send additional UN observ-
ers to supervise heavy artillery in B-H.

On a Personal Note
Since July 14th I have not been able to
contact Mira (my dear friend in Dobrinja).
I call and her telephone is quiet. I am very
worried. On Friday I called her parents on
island of Brac, they didn't know anything.
Then, I called our mutual childhood friend
in Dubrovnik, Stanka. Stanka's mother
answered to tell me that Stanka had been
wounded by a shell, lost several fingers on
her hand, received leg wounds, and was
recuperating on an island near Dubrovnik.
She also said that no one had heard
anything of Mira. lt is becoming very
difficult for me. I cry a lot. I am also angry,
damn it!

My Corner
My friends, I have exhausted my energy
putting out this information sheet. lt has
been very important for me to do it but
must end it now. And now is a good
time to do that. ln the previous 7 issues,
in addition to following the news,
discussed a variety of views of what is ge
ing on in the territories of former Yugo
slavia.
ln this, the last issue, it had been my
intention to discuss situation in my home
town, Dubrovnik. However, instead of me
writing about it, I welcome an article writ-
ten by Mr. Scott Pusich. He wrote a Mas-
ter's Thesis at FSU Geography Depart-
ment entitled "Political Boundaries and
Ethnic Nationalism in Yugoslavia, 191&
1990" and, given his particular and per-
sonal interest in the Dubrovnik region, is
well qualified to write about it.
I must tell you that there is a very special
relationship which people born
Dubrovnik feel with this magnificent city.
To us, it is not a tourist attraction, as it is
to millions of tourists around the world; to
us, it is the city of our youth, the city of
our love, the poem in stone, the smell of

The Serbian goal of attacking Dubrovnik
is not protecting Serbs in the area
- it is
to destroy Croatian culture and conquer
Croatian territory. They won't stop or
leave on their own they haven't yet.
Someone

What's New
ln Croatia
Croatia will conduct parliamentary and
presidential elections this Sunday, August
2. Leaders of eight political parties have
been accepted as nominees. Seventeen
political groups, parties, and coalitions
have put forth their candidates for 124
seats in the House of Representatives of
the Croatian Padiament. President Dr.
Franjo Tudjman is expected to win the
Presidential race.
The part'y to watch is the Croatian Party
of Rights and their leader Dobroslav
Paraga. This is a very extremely right
nationalist oriented party which promotes
the idea of Great Croatia including all of
BH. lt is not expected to do better than
third overall. However, further violence in
Croatia and BH gives its platform more
and more followers throughout the
region. Afterall, it is their paramilitary
groups who did most of the effective
fighting on the Croat side since the
beginning of the conflict and are viewed
by many as liberators.
There will be many foreign observers sta-
tioned throughout Croatia. lt is expected
that if the
elections are evaluated as
democratic by the observers, Croatia will
become a serious candidate for the
European Council seat.
ln the Dubrovnik region, this Wednesday,
July 29, the representatives of Croatian
and Yugoslav (?) military conducted ne
gotiations for the occupation forces' final
withdrawal from the Dubrovnik region.
According to the Croatian Radio report
they reached an agreement which in-
cludes detailed plans as to how the
withdrawal will be effectuated and when,
It is supposed to be completed in eight
days. Can we really trust them?
One point is still contested: Prevlaka, the
miniature isthmus at the far South of the
region is still claimed by Montenegro.
Croats pledge not to relinquish it.
Belgrade authorities deny that any
agreement has been made. [What else is
new?]
Slavonska PosaMna, the Croatian region
along the northern border of &H, contin-
ues to suffer destruction, Serbian forces
from across river Sava pound the whole
region daily. On average 2G25 villages
and towns are hit daily.
Refugees
The gigantic refugee crisis in the region is
finally making itself visible to the world.
The United Nations High Commission on
Refugees held an emergency meeting in
Geneva, Switzerland this Wednesday.
European nations disagreed as to how
best to help the refugees
- accept them
on their territory (a view supported by
Germany) or send financial contributions
to holding nations (Great Britain).
Numbers in the river of refugees which
started last Fall in Croatia rise daily by the
tens of thousands.2 h is estimated to be
near 2-2.5 million today. People flee
ethnic cleansing, the most devious form
of aggression against fundamental

their possessions to the aggressors and
are leaving the region of their own desire.
This strategy is not new. I first heard of it
in Croatia last Fall when thousands of
bewildered residents left town of llok at
the far Eastern tip of the country.
tt is not inconceivable that some extremist
Croat forces conduct similar activities
with some local Serb populations in both
Croatia and BH.
ln Bosnia and Hercegovina
The situation in B-H is tragic. Serbs are
determined to destroy, destroy, destroy.
Over 8,000 people died since April 1992.
Many cities are under siege and/or con-
tinuous bombardment: Sarajevo,
Gorazde, Derventa, Gradacac, Bihac.
Croat and Muslim residents of some oth-
ers have perished: Loznica, Bijeljina,
Kozarac, Zvornik. Beautiful city of Mostar
(my father was born there) has been de
stroyed, literally destroyedl This week,
fighting has been reported in: Sarajevo,
Gorazde, Gradacac, Bihac, Tuzla, Tomis-
lavgrad, Derventa, Kupres, Visegrad,
Bosanska Krupa, Kotor Varos ... the list is
too long and continues.
On a Personal Note
My daughter, Vanesa graduated from
high school in Osijek and is well, getting
ready to enroll in a local University this
Fall. (You are my champion sweetheart.)
My mother, Marija, in Dubrovnik is an-
other champion. She is 75 and during the
barbaric, Serbian occupation of
