1. A retaining wall with a stratified backfill and a surcharge load as shown in Fig.

Draw the
earth pressure diagram detaining the values at the critical points. Also estimate the
resultant thrust on the wall and its position. [161.677 kN/m2, 1.837 m above the base of
wall]

2. For the retaining wall as shown in Fig., assume that the wall can yield sufficiently to
develop active state. Use Rankine’s active pressure theory and determine (a) active force
per meter of the wall and (b) the location of the resultant line of action. [183.13 kN/m2]

3. Plot (not to scale) the active earth pressure distribution on the retaining will show by
Rankine’s theory for the data given.
4. For an earth retaining structure as shown in Fig., construct earth pressure diagram for
active state and find the total thrust per unit length of the wall. [501.08 kN/m]

5. For an earth retaining wall as shown in Fig., sketch the earth pressure diagram under
active state and find the total thrust (per unit length of wall) and its position. [450.66
kN/m, 3.085 m above base][Example 20.25, PN 546]

6. For the frictionless retaining wall shown in Fig., plot the distribution of active earth
pressure after the occurrence of the tensile crack. [16 kN/m2] [Example 20.28, PN 548]
