U P D AT E February
2019
Ben writes… I’ve attended the past five New Year House Party
events, and with this being my first year as a leader I’ve been left with a lot to
reflect on. One of the entertaining aspects of the weekend was the new ‘ninja
blessings’ introduced for the first time. Every attendee (including leaders) had
the name of someone else and had to bless that person as much as possible
without them knowing. People went pretty all out on this in some cases.
Sweets were shared, others chose to share encouragements with verses on
notes and one particularly devoted young person sacrificed their dessert so
that the receiver got double every day. My personal favourite was when a youth
came up to me and pointed at a group of about eight people before saying
“I blessed my person by making them tea, and made everyone else tea to throw
them off the scent!”, as if they had just pulled the heist of the century by giving
out drinks for free. Even though the acts weren’t huge, it excited me to see the
capacity for giving in a generation too often labelled as self-indulgent.
Another thing that the four days prompted me to think about was the areas
we choose to invest in for young people. Our youth-led worship was followed
by youth-led preaches (including a couple of ex-attendee young leaders) and in
all of these acts I could see the support and encouragement they had received
from their churches, families and 267 bearing fruit. I don’t mean that last
remark to sound self-congratulatory, I’ve personally only been working with
267 for a few months so can’t take any credit; but having been on the receiving
end of the project’s work for many years, I know what an impact (as Mike would
say) ‘doing life with’ youth, rather than simply trying to be in charge of them,
can have.
That’s what The Houseparty really enables
from my perspective. People talk about
‘leadership potential’ in young people,
but I think all the youth I’ve encounter
through the project have plenty of that.
Opportunities to lead and the tools to do
so is when I’ve really seen growth. (If I was
less concerned about looking like I’ve said
all this to plug the new 267 Re-Fuelled
Conference aimed at encouraging young
leaders, I would have ended this by telling
you it was on the 30th of March and that
there are more details to follow)!!
Thanks...
l LIZ: is our new Project Administrator. It was a real ‘God thing’ that Liz came to us and we
are truly thankful for how she has thrown herself into the ministry already. We also give
thanks for Tracy who is spending a day a week in January supporting Liz and helping hand
over the role. Thank you Tracy!
l Katherine: Katherine is busy planning for Re-Fuelled, we give thanks for loads of
answered prayers already and a real sense of excitement building for this event. Loads of
leaders and speakers have really got behind this event already.
l Ben: Ben is epic. Ben has been refining our website and ensuring all events are accessible
and have the correct info online. It has been a real joy to have Ben in the office each
Thursday and he is bring us some much needed tech support, and humour!
l Claire: I am continually blessed by having Claire on team as she brings such a wide array
of skills and gifts. On Houseparty it was a truly awesome thing seeing her handle so many
aspects of the trip but did it with joy, humour, humility and tenacity.
l New Years Houseparty: I think Ben has hit the nail on the head with his words about
Houseparty but I am also reflecting on just how truly inspiring it is to see young people
embrace their giftings and serve others with them. What a great time it was!
l Team Christmas meal: Just before Christmas we had a meal with the whole team and all
trustees. It was a time of celebration and joy as we took the opportunity to give thanks for all
God has done this past year.
l Tori: As well as Liz joining the staff team, we have Tori joining the trustee team. Tori is a
good friend and also Children’s and Families Minister at St Paul’s Church St Albans. I know
Tori will be a real blessing and encouragement to the trustees and to 267.
As well as fo
od, café
this great event. CHARGE, Xsite, The Haven and & breakout
zones
FUEL are happening as well.
l Our 267 VAN: We are looking at seeking funding to buy a new van to replace our ageing one.
If you know anyone who works for a dealership, or even if you wanted to donate to the new
van, then please do get in touch. Thank you.
l Team: Pray our team continues to work well together and support each other. With Tracy
leaving and Liz joining us there is a little change to get used to. But pray as we each serve in
our different roles we will grow in our sense of team and a shared vision. Pray for Mike as he
leads the team and pray also for his time on his own to create, dream, plan and write.
l Trustees: Pray for these guys as they support us, encourage us, guide us, cheer us on, give
their time, energy, gifts and care. Pick a name this week and pray for them; our trustees are
Sean, Nigel, Kate, Anne, Hannah, Jane, David and Tori.
