NOMALISATION PROCEDURE FOR
UNIT-1/2 DT: 08.01.2013
STAGE-1 UNITS
A PURPOSE
This document is prepared to guide the operating personnel while isolating and
normalizing TDBFP in stage-1 units.
B SCOPE
This is applicable to all the 2 units of stage-1 (2X500 MW units),TSTPS- Kaniha.

C INTRODUCTION
To cater the feeder water requirement of the boiler three boiler feed pumps (BFPs)
have been provided. Two of them are turbine driven (TD) and one is motor driven
(MD). During normal operation both TDBFPs remain in service and MDBFP remains
as standby on auto. MDBFP is generally used during unit start up or shut down, low
load operation of the plant or emergency situations. This document will deal with total
isolation and normalization procedure of TDBFPs.

F ISOLSTION PROCEDURE

F-1 PRECONDITON
1. After pump stopping of TDBFP ensure decoupling of main pump from turbine at
around speed of 180-200 rpm.
2. Put turbine on barring once the turbine got standstill.
3. After stopping of TDBFP ensure standby condenser vacuum pump is kept available to
take care of the vacuum drop due to isolation of TDBFP.
F-2 TURBINE SIDE ISOLATION
1. Close LP steam manual isolation valve & its IBV.
2. Close HP steam-CRH man isolation valve and its IBV manually and auxiliary steam
MOT isolation from UCB (Normally it remain closed with power supply off)
3. Open the vent valve at 17M of LP steam line and HP steam line. Check for the
manual valves before the motorized vent valves are open.
4. Check for BFPT CRH/AUX steam pressure (HP steam and LP steam pressure).
These should be zero. If not coming to zero check for IBV and further tighten them.
5. Close TDBFP exhaust v/v. (Bypass v/v for exhaust valve to be kept in open condition
for cooling). Close gland steam isolation valve, tighten it manually (P/S of MOV to be
kept OFF) and close its manual isolation valve (at return header). To be done one hour

after pump stopping.
6. Isolate power supply of CRH steam/AUX steam motorized isolation valves, gland
steam valve and exhaust valve.
7. Check whether drains before and after HP and LP strainers are in open condition else
open it
8. The following drains can be kept open for fast cooling, if the vacuum is ok. Otherwise
these drains may be kept closed depending on vacuum.
I. Alt drain LP/HP strainer (For that particular pump)
II. Alt drain before LP strainer
III. Alt drain before AUX steam valve
IV. Alt drains CRH
9. Wait for the Turbine impulse chamber temp to come down to 120°C for stopping
barring.
F-3 FEED WATER SIDE ISOLATION
1. After TDBFP is stopped and put on barring gear, do the feed water isolation as follows
2. Close warm up line manual isolation v/v and motorized isolation v/v at 17M and switch
off supply.

5. Close recirculation CV man iso v/v and its IBV.
6. Chemical dosing line in suction pipe to be isolated in consultation with chemist.
7. Close R/H spray manual isolating valve.
8. After doing point 1 to 6 isolation, wait with suction v/v open Turbine barring is stopped.
9. Turbine barring to be stopped at an impulse chamber temp of 1200C.After stopping
the barring, suction v/v & suction relief isolation v/v to be closed and wait for pump
top/bottom casing temp to come down. Check booster pump suction pressure is not
increasing if so first open suction v/v and then tighten discharge v/v and its IBV.
10. With suction v/v closed when main main pump top/bottom casing temp comes down
to1100C pump draining to be started.
11. Open RH spray line vent and see the suction pressure coming to zero.
12. Pump can be drained by opening the
a. Drain in the R/C line before C.C to drain main pump and its discharge line.
b. Horizontal strainer drain to drain inter connecting pipe between booster pump
discharge and main pump suction
c. Booster pump drain/ Booster suction strainer drain to drain the suction line of
booster pump/ booster
F-4 LUBE OIL SYSTEM ISOLATION
1. Ensure Turbine barring gear is stopped and pump is drained.
2. Lube oil system to be stopped when all the turbine/pump side bearing temperature
come down to 450C. Isolate P/S of AOP 1&2 and DCEOP.
3. Isolate power supply of disconnect coupling motor.
4. TDBFP oil tank vapor extractor fan(one may be kept in service if no PTW is asked on
tank on pumps or VEFs.

G TO ATTEND MAIN PUMP NDE MECH SEAL LEAKAGE

1. Do isolations 1-8 of F-2 and 1-6 of F-3 as per above procedure.
2. Close the suction v/v when the main pump top / bottom casing temp comes down to

110°C.
3. Stop the barring gear for 20 min, though the turbine impulse chamber temp is on
higher side (>120°C).
4. Decouple the booster pump coupling (To be done by TMD) as Turbine to be again put
on barring & pump to be drained for attending leakage.
5. Stop the lube oil pump.
6. Blank the NDE side oil supply and return line.( To be done by TMD)
7. Isolate power supply of disconnect coupling motor.
8. After decoupling and blanking run the lube oil pump.
9. Put the turbine back on barring gear.
10. Drain the pump as per above procedure and issue PTW for maintenance.

H TDBFP NORMALIZATION PROCEDURE

H-1 OIL SYSTEM
1. Oil coolers are lined up from water/oil side.
2. L.O & control oil filters are lined up.
3. All drains in L.O & control oil system are closed.
4. EOP should be started first to fill the system followed by starting vapor exhauster.
5. AOP to be started after checking for any oil leakage in the system and EOP to be
stopped.
6. Lub returned in view glass in all bearings to be checked.
Lub oil pressure gauges to be checked for indication.
7. Check lub oil tank level is normal after oil flow is established in all systems
H-2 CHARGING OF PUMP WATER SIDE
1. FST lvl is O.K
2. Main pump, Booster pump and RH Spray line drain V/Vs to be closed
3. All suction discharge line and pump casing drains to be closed
4. Recirculation lines drain to be kept open
5. Suction valve of TDBFP to be crack open till the venting is complete – charging to be
done slowly
6. Main pump/ booster pump R/H spray line vents and R/C line drain/vent to be closed
proper venting.
7. Seal venting
a. If pump is charged with hot water, seal cooler vents are to be kept closed
while charging. They will be opened at a pressure of 3 Kg, for a short time
ensuring that seal flushing in/out temp are within limit.
b. If the pump is charged with cold water (after long shut down) seal cooler vents
will be kept opened while charging.
c. TMD to be informed for the venting of the seal strainer
8. Open R/C manual valve and suction v/v after the pump attain full pressure. Check the
opening of R/C control valve at local/UCB.
9. RH spray isolating v/v to be opened and drain to be closed.

H-3 BARRING
1. Ensuring (FW side line up) suction v/v, R/C manual and pneumatic v/v open.
2. Exhaust v/v IBV to be opened after getting vacuum in condenser and ensuring
manhole near exhaust v/v is closed.
