as to what you want to write about, you have
to figure out why you want to write.

Do you want to write to get published? A

something you would be very proud about.
Whatever it is, you have to figure it out first,
before you can birth an idea.

have to find an idea that excites you

Sometimes, you have lots of ideas

swarming in your head, and you don’t
know which to go through with. In this
case, you will have to ask yourself,
“Which of these ideas excite me more?”
“Which of these ideas can I build up on
enough to write a book?” The answers
to these questions will help in deciding
what your theme will be.

Once you have an idea on ground, you

move to the main writing. But before
you create your first draft, it is advisable
that you draft out a detailed structure
of your book for you to flesh out later.
This would serve as a road map to guide
you as you write, so you can avoid
inconsistencies, and some other minor
errors that you could easily avoid with
a detailed outline. Work on developing
your first draft, and once that is done, it
is up for reviewing and revising.

MARKETING
This is the last link in the chain, and the success of this stage determines how many
people get to read your book, or if anybody gets to read it at all. Proper marketing
starts by first knowing who the target audience is, the age group, the target gender,
things like that. You know why? No matter how good your book is, not everybody will
read it. This is a simple fact.

Next, start marketing before you even finish writing. Tell people, let them anticipate
the coming! In marketing, you cannot remove networking. Join book clubs, talk to
people about your book, people that you know will be interested of course. Don’t
forget to attend book exposand other places and events that would put you around
possible buyers. Talk to them; request that they tell someone else.

If you realize that you don’t have what it takes to market your book very well, or even
at all, then you can find all these tools on the Composio platform. We have all the
templates and strategy tool kits you will need, with instructions on how to use them
to send your book forward into a large market.

CHAPTER
TWO

HOW TO A lot of potential best sellers have ended

at just that, potential, because at some

point, their authors could not continue
writing it. Not necessarily because they
didn’t have the story, but rather because

YOUR WRITING of bad writing habits. Yes, there is such

a thing as a bad writing habit. Writing
without consistency is a bad writing
habit, and so many dreams have died
because of this.

To achieve that masterpiece you dream

of, you will need to put in a lot of work,
time and devotion to the cause. But it
doesn’t have to be overwhelming, and
you don’t have to allow yourself get
choked up by it. We at Composio have
developed smart innovative templates
that will help you write faster and better.
When you choose a template based on
the topic you want to write about, the
template lays out a format that will help
you get started in your writing process.

Five Keys to Writing, Publishing and Marketing Your Book | www.composio.co 8

TIME OUT TO WRITE
For more efficient writing, you need to make time out to write. The importance of this
cannot be emphasized enough, especially if you have a rather busy schedule. Find a
time during the 24 hours you have been given to write, even if it is two hours right
before you sleep, or two hours after you have woken up. There is no general rule here;
you just have to find what works for you, and then do it.

The thing about consistency in writing is that you get better as you go. You could write
something today that doesn’t particularly please you, but at least write it. Another
day, you can brush up on it when you have the perfect words.

FIGURING OUT WHAT YOU WANT TO WRITE

Figuring out what you want to write would help a lot too. Yes, you already have your
story in mind, and preferably, you have sketched out an outline or used the outline
template feature in Composio, but thinking about the whole picture at once could
cause you to panic, so why not break that full picture into daily achievable goals?

Having figured out what to write that day, you can then begin to call up the words to
describe that thing you have decided to write. It is even better for your concentration
and consistency, especially if you are dealing with a lot of characters. It is easier
than you can imagine, getting lost while writing your own book, believe it or not. So,
figuring out what you want to write and having it written down works like magic.

If you are working with a deadline, either one that an agent has set for you, or one
you have set for yourself, which is smart, by the way, you might want to consider
setting writing goals of how much to write each day or week. Assign tasks for yourself
that you must accomplish.

Five Keys to Writing, Publishing and Marketing Your Book | www.composio.co 9

One of the key goals of the Composio platform templates is to
help you set writing deadlines as well as reminders to help you
write on a schedule. Using your schedule and abilities as a
determining factor, the platform can help determine how many
words you want to have added to your book, say at the end of
each week.

Your best weapon here is discipline, people. If you are not

disciplined enough to see your set goals through, even with the
smart templates, you will not get too far with your book in time.

Have you ever had one of those days where you would just not
feel like writing? Well, it happens to all writers, and if they all
gave those days wings and allowed it to fly, the world would not
be blessed with all those amazing books you see in the book
stores.

Work against that feeling, and try to put something down, no

matter what. Failure to do this and you will not be able to meet
any of your set goals, and in the long run, there is the possibility
of not being able to go further with the project.

A PROFESSIONAL BOOK COVER IS A

NECESSITY
The phrase, ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’ has been used
so many times you would expect that people will actually start
to take it serious, but do they? Does one see a book with zero
physical appeal from the front cover and pick that over a glossy
book sitting right next to it on the book shelf? Well, the answer
is no, as cases where it happens are few and far in between.
Therefore, it goes without saying that you need, absolutely
need to have a professional book cover done.

Five Keys to Writing, Publishing and Marketing Your Book | www.composio.co 10

We always tell our clients that aesthetics is not overrated when it comes to having a
professional book cover done. Take note that there is a lot of emphasis on ‘professional’.
You want something that puts your book in good light, something that gives it a
fighting chance out there. It should be something that when a random person sees
it sitting on the shelf, they would be drawn to it and curious enough to want to know
what secrets the pages hold.

One of the best features of Composio is the ability to choose pre-designed covers that
have been professionally created specifically for this platform. You have the ability to
customize these covers for your book and give you book a unique, professional look.

PROFESSIONAL EDITING IS A NECESSITY

Finally, let us not forget to discuss the importance of professional editing, emphasis
on professional here as well. Yes, you have written that amazing book, and you want
it out there, but you could have missed some things. In fact, the possibility of that
happening is very high.

It is in the little things; are the punctuation marks present or are they well placed? Is
your sentence formation as it should be? Do you have places where your flow was just
off? Did you go out of line at some point? You need editing to check these things for
you; professional editing. Usually, a second pair of eyes would catch several things
you have missed. You might think that your own cross checking would suffice, but you
cannot be too sure.

This was one of the issues we looked to resolve with Composio. We created a writing
platform that allows you to collaborate with others while you are writing, including
editors. You can invite a co-writer or editor that you have chosen by simply inputting
their email address and sharing your writing document. Likewise, when you click
on the collaboration button, you can choose an editor from the list of professional
editors that are a part of the Composio platform. Why not let us, professionals in the
field look at it for you, patch the things that need to be patched, and fine tune that
perfection you have made until it is flawless.

If you are worried that editing of such will change your story, you need not fear, we
just want to help you create the best version of your story possible.

CHAPTER
THREE

WHAT As it was stated in the first chapter, there

is more than one option available to you

ARE YOUR
to publish your book, and having a little
bit of knowledge about some things
would help guide your decision making.

PUBLISHING WHAT IS AN ISBN, AND

OPTIONS? WHY DO YOU NEED IT?
ISBN means international standard
book number, and is something you
are quite familiar with. If you look at
the back of most books, you will find a
string of 13-digit numbers (for books
published before 2007, it is 10), that is
the ISBN.

Basically, it is a product identifier that

is used by publishers, internet retailers,
libraries, book shops and other supply
chain participants for ordering, listing,
sales records and stock control
purposes. It identifies the country that
your book is from, the publisher, and
even the book itself gets an identity.

Five Keys to Writing, Publishing and Marketing Your Book | www.composio.co 12

You don’t necessarily have to get an ISBN, but if it is part of your
plans to sell your book through a distributor, a book store, an
online store, stores generally, or if you plan to have your book
in a library, then you will need to get one. It makes locating and
identifying your book easy for them.

Getting an ISBN is you planning ahead for your book; big plans
at that and it is highly advised and encouraged by us. Whether
you want to purchase you own ISBN or publish under Composio
Publishing, you can do either on our platform.

WHY DO YOU NEED TO COPYRIGHT

YOUR BOOK?
A copyright is a law that grants you as an author full ownership
over what you create, giving you the exclusive right to do with
it as you please. You can decide whether or not you want it
reproduced, distributed, or whatever at all. Copyright is like a
legal certificate of ownership over your creation.

Although, using the U.S copyright law, your self-published work

is protected as soon as you write your work down. Copyright
itself is based on your creative work, and is not dependent on
any formal agreement with a book publisher or self-publishing
company.

Registration with a Copyright Office is beneficial, as it gives

you a higher level of security and even though the copyright
protects you as you start to write, you’ll have to register your
work with the Copyright Office to be officially recognized as the
copyright holder in a court of law.

Five Keys to Writing, Publishing and Marketing Your Book | www.composio.co 13

The main point to placing a copyright on your book is to protect it. There are such
people as book thieves, and without a copyright law, there is nothing stopping them
from taking your manuscript, slapping a cover on it, and pushing it to the public. You
can defend it legally with a copyright to your name. To start the copyright process
you can go to copyright.gov or you can use the Composio platform, either option
works great.

E-BOOKS VS. PRINTED BOOK

There is an ongoing competition between eBooks and printed book, and the race
seems to be getting tighter now. Different people prefer any of these two for a number
of reasons, and what they would subscribe to depends on these reasons. Your target
audience would determine your best option.

Some people would prefer printed books because;

● Some people are invested in building a library they can hold and feel, and it
would only make sense that they buy printed books.

● Some book lovers simply love the smell of books, and will buy printed books for
this reason.

● Some people like some level of tangibility for their money, and a printed book
would give them that, better than an eBook.

Some people would prefer eBooks because,

● Considering the fact that lots of eBooks could be stored in a small device, some
people would rather this option.

● Economic wise, eBooks are cheaper.

● EBooks are relatively easier to carry around, with the option of carrying as
many books as you would want to read on a mobile device.

No matter which option you choose, you can publish in any format from Composio.

HOW TO Marketing has been established as the

about it efficiently and effectively? There
are a number of ways to push your book to
reach your target audience that you could

BOOK try and that we could help you with.

E-MAIL MARKETING
Although there are tremendous marketing
channels and social media sites available
today for marketing and promoting a new
book, email is still one of the best ways
to reach fans and potential new readers.
Almost everybody you would want to reach
would have an email address, even if they
don’t have any social media account.

According to one study, 68% of consumers

find email to be their #1 preferred channel
for receiving commercial messages. All
they have to do is subscribe to an author’s
mailing list when they visit their site, or
another site that features the author.

Five Keys to Writing, Publishing and Marketing Your Book | www.composio.co 16

Such subscribers are a prime audience to receive an email
about a new book, book signings, and other news involving a
book you are working on. It is important to keep subscribers
engaged between book launches. You don’t want them to get
bored, so you need to give them a little something every now
and then for them to remember your existence.

If you want to build email engagement, you could offer

subscribers free content as a way to get them hooked after they
first subscribe. For your final mail before a book is launched,
you could add a link for the download of the book.

SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING

This is without doubt one of the cheapest marketing platforms
you can find in this age. With various social media platforms
springing up from time to time, you cannot be short of people
to push your market to.

As an author, your social media game has to be very solid, as you

need to have a strong online presence. Social media platforms
like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are so popular these days,
with very few people not knowing of their existence.

Create an account on each of these platforms, and build

your followership on them. Send regular updates about
what you are working on, your scheduled book launch, book
signing, and everything related to your book journey. Create
anticipation by giving your followers teasers, to keep them
interested and eager for your book to drop.

Create a question and answer section on your website where
your readers can interact with you and get a feel of you. People
are more liable to stay engaged to a person and their art if they
find them relatable. So, create a platform for them to get a feel
of you.

In this case as well, you might not make as good a blogger as

you are a writer, so you could have someone do the job for you.
Again, these are all services we offer in composio.

AUTHOR PROFILE PAGES

Create an author profile page! There are various platforms you
can create an author platform, and it is a way to reach numerous
readers all over the world.Write a good profile that will connect
you to your readers. There are tips to doing this.

Having an author biography is most times the last item authors

think about, especially for self-published authors. As a result,
we may even consider it to be the least important part of our
marketing strategy. In many ways, it can be almost as important
as a one-sentence pitch, and it is a key component for you to
building a personal brand. In fact, think of it as a way to put
yourself out there to the world.

Platforms such as Goodreads are good spaces for you to create

an author profile. In composio, we can help you handle writing
and creating that catchy profile that will attract and keep your
audience.

THE BENEFITS In case you didn’t know, there is such a

thing as an author’s community, where

authors meet and talk about things that
affect them, rub minds, and network.

AN AUTHOR
There are various online network

COMMUNITY platforms for authors to meet and

connect. Some of them are physical, just
like readers have book clubs, and some
of them are virtual such as Writerscafe
and AuthorHouse.

If you are a very introverted writer, there

is the possibility that you would shy away
from networking with other writers like
you. But if you think about the potential
benefits it could bring you, you might
want to reconsider, and step out of your
shell, for the sake of promoting your art.

Let us look at some of these benefits,

shall we?

ENCOURAGEMENT
Encouragement is a very strong thing, and it does wonders to
the ego. A kind word here and another one there can change
the way a person looks at things completely.

Think about this, if you are having a bad day, and someone says
something kind about your outfit. Think about the beautiful
smile that would light your face up and your entire day in fact.

Now, imagine if such a kind word is said about your work,

something that you have been spending a lot of time on. It
would give you some boost, is that not right?

Associating with a group of authors like yourself that understand

the struggle, and know what it is like could offer you some
manner of comfort, knowing there are people that would offer
you the encouragement you need to go on when you are having
a hard time with carrying on with your art.

It is like having a support group for that part of your life. If you
ask people that belong to one, they would tell you just how
much peace they get after discussing their challenges with
like minds, and finding a solution to whatever challenges they
might be facing.

A problem shared they say, is a problem half solved. With an

and you can be sure that someone there has faced something
similar, and would have a word of advice for you.

YOU GO FARTHER TOGETHER
There is some kind of charm to associating with a group of people with like minds that
lends support and advice to one another. They also assist each other on the way to
the top and carry each other along.

Think of it as working with a team. Although you work independently, you are also
dependent on another for the little encouragement and support you offer each other.
Together, you can set goals and work towards them together.

If you are in a team and you all set goals together, you would not want to be the odd
one out, the person that didn’t make it with the rest. This is enough to push you, and
every other member in the community to work hard at creating their art, and making
it amazing.
