Um modelo foi desenvolvido em ratos com a finalidade de avaliar a mortalidade devido a arritmias
de origem isquêmica. O tronco comum da coronária esquerda foi ocluído por um período de 10 min no
fim dos quais foi reperfundido.
No grupo tratado com verapamil, a mortalidade, quando avaliada nas primeiras 48 h após a
reperfusão coronariana, foi 74% menor do que no grupo controle (p < 0,001).
Essa drástica redução na mortalidade provavelmente se deve à ação antiarrítmica desse fármaco.
