This thesis described about the Analysis of Syntactical Errors Made by the
Students in Writing Thesis at English and Literature Department of Adab and
Humanities Faculty of Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar. The objectives
of the research are to find out the types of syntactical errors made by the students in
writing thesis and to find out the most frequent type of errors made by the students in
writing thesis.
The writer used a descriptive method in analyzing and collecting data. The
sources of data in this research were the students‟ theses of English and Literature
Department in academic year 2012-2013. The writer used note taking as the
instrument to get the data. The writer made some notes to classify and find the error
in the thesis. The procedures of data collection are reading the theses, observing an
error, identifying the data, classifying the syntactical errors, explaining and revising
errors. The writer used Politzer and Romirez’s theory focusing on the Syntactical
errors.
Based on finding and discussion in this thesis, the researcher found that the
errors made by students were in the term of noun phrase, verb, verb construction, and
transformation. Then, the most frequent error found was in the noun phrase term with
48.7%.
The researcher suggests the English teachers to give reinforcement for the
students about the basic rules of constructing sentences. The writers also have to
know about the types of errors which are usually made to avoid of making errors.
