SPECIAL MESSAGES FOR DIWALI

Diwali is a significant celebration for many people across the country.
As well as being a time for family, the festival of lights is a unique chance to recognise the
contribution our Indian communities make to New Zealand.
I always enjoy attending Diwali festivities. The warm and welcoming spirit and the vibrant and
colourful entertainment make it a must-do for many Kiwis.
Greetings, Kia Ora, Kia Orana, Fakalofa Lahi Atu, Taloha Ni—to which can be added Namaste,
Namashkar, Sat Sri Akal, Kam Cho.
Diwali is one of the most important and ancient of Indian festivals and has specific spiritual meanings in
Hinduism and other religions as a celebration of the victory of good over evil and the uplifting of spiritual
darkness. It is, of course, a particularly special time for Indian families to mark the year that has past and
look forward to the new year with the hope of prosperity, health and joy.

New Zealand is an increasingly diverse and vibrant nation and the National-led Government wants
all New Zealanders to contribute to the success of our communities and our economy.
National is working with you to secure a brighter future for your family, make your communities
safer and help build a sustainable economy.
We value the strong relationship we have with our Indian communities and we are working hard to
ensure your voice is heard at the highest levels of Government.
I hope you enjoy celebrating Diwali with your family.
Symbolised by the lighting of lamps, the Festival of Lights has grown to hold a much wider significance.
For members of the Indian Diaspora, both in New Zealand and elsewhere, it symbolises the best traditions
of Indian culture and history and their connection to the land of their ancestors.
As a festival that speaks of bringing light to darkness, Diwali also sends a powerful message of peace. It
urges people of all faiths, denominations and cultures to reach out across the divisions that separate us,
one from another, and to seek reconciliation and understanding.
As Governor-General of New Zealand, it is with great pleasure that I send my best regards to everyone
attending Diwali celebrations this year. I wish you all a very Happy Diwali!

Understanding Diwali The literal meaning of ‘Diwali’ in Sanskrit is
‘a row of lamps’. The most popular tradition
of Diwali is filling little clay lamps with oil
and wick and lighting them in rows all over
the house. Even today, the tradition projects
the rich and glorious past of our country and
teaches us to uphold the true values of life.
Diwali has many legends and religious
accounts associated with it. Lights and
diyas are lit to signifying the driving away of
darkness and ignorance, as well as the
awakening of the light within ourselves. It is
the perfect time for family gatherings, foods,
celebrations and pooja. Goddess Laxmi
plays a major role in this festival, as do
Ram and Sita. This autumn festival is a five-
days celebration, of which each one has its
own significance.
People renovate and decorate their
houses and business places. Entrances are
made colorful with lovely traditional motifs
of Rangoli designs to welcome Laxmi, the
Goddess of wealth and prosperity. To
indicate her long awaited arrival, small
footprints are drawn with rice flour and
vermilion powder (kumkum) all over the
houses. Lamps are kept burning all through
the nights.
In order to welcome Goddess Laxmi,
the house is kept clean and rangoli is drawn
at the doorstep. A pandit is consulted for the
best time of puja. The general things
needed for a diwali puja are silver and gold
coins, suparis, uncooked Rice, paan leaves,
kumkum for applying tilak, mithaai (Indian
sweets), camphor, agarbattis (incense
sticks), dry fruit (almonds, cashews), flower
petals and Lakshmi-Ganesh icon.
The pooja ritual is performed in the
evening when tiny diyas of clay are lit to
drive away the shadows of evil spirits.
Bhajans are sung in praise of the goddess
and sweets are offered to her. Diwali puja
consists of a combined pooja of five deities:
Ganesha is worshipped at the beginning of
every auspicious act as Vighnaharta;
Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped in her
three forms Mahalakshmi,the goddess of
wealth and money, Mahasaraswati, the
goddess of books and learning and
Mahakali. People also worship ‘Kuber’- the
treasurer of the gods.

The Festival of Lights
Diwali, the festival of lights, is also the
festival of gifts. One of the most celebrated
occasions in India, Diwali is associated with
fortune and prosperity, and hence, it is the
biggest gift giving and shopping festival in
India. Giving Gifts on Diwali is an excellent
way to strengthen relationships with your
near and dear ones. A present on this
occasion reflects the warm feelings of the
gift-giver and also the spirit of the festival.
The popular tradition of exchanging gifts
on Diwali is an age-old custom tied in with
the festival and probably started with the
inception of Diwali itself. In olden days, the
simple rural people of India whose
occupation mostly consisted of agriculture
and cattle-rearing, used to exchange
homemade sweets, farm produce or
handcrafted decorative gifts among
themselves on Diwali.
Such presents were considered a token
of love and the warmth; and the good

more than the gifts themselves. With time
however, the tradition got more and more
complicated and gift-giving is not so
simple as it used to be earlier.

presented with not only on Diwali, but also

wonderful tradition is not wholly a
materialistic one and for a large section of
Indian people, gift-giving still stands as a
way of conveying love, respect,
thankfulness, appreciation and a sense of
belonging.

A Puja Thali is a metal plate, usually made up
of copper, brass, steel, silver and sometimes
even gold, in which are kept all those
accessories (puja samagri) that are required to
perform the puja (worship) of the many Hindu
Gods and Goddesses. During Diwali, Hindus
worship Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and
Ganesh, the God of auspicious beginnings, to
usher in wellbeing and prosperity to individual
homes. The Diwali Puja Thali is vital to the
worship of Goddess Lakshmi and her brother
Lord Ganesh, and that worshipping or prayer
is an integral part of Diwali celebrations.
Offering prayers is done with great
dedication and devotion in all religions and the
Puja Thali is an inherent part of performing the
prayer rituals among Hindus. It is required
during the worship of Lord Ganesh and
Goddess Lakshmi (the deities associated with
Wealth and Prosperity) through Aartis, or
prayer songs. A typical Diwali Thali consists of
scared ingredients for Hindu worship like
unbroken rice grains (Akshat), rice paste, roli
for tilak (a sacred coloured mark drawn on the
forehead), sweets and seasonal fruits for
prasad (food offering to God), incense sticks
(Dhoop /Agarbatti), sandalwood paste,
camphor (kaphur), coconut (narial), betel
leaves (Paan patta), a small pot filled with
water (Kalash), gold or silver coins with images
of Hindu holy symbols (Om, Swastik or Shree),
candles (Mombatti), aarti-diya (lamp for
worship), a hand bell (Ghanti), sacred crimson
string (Kalava or mouli) to tie around the wrist,
and petals of some colourful flowers. These are
the items that the women hold in both their hands
throughout the period of worship (Puja).
A Diwali Puja Thali is a plate, generally
made out of copper or occasionally gold, that is
utilized to store all those accessories that are
necessary during the worship of Lord Ganesh
and Goddess Lakshmi. Adorned Diwali Puja
Thalis having all the Puja accessories can be
bought “ready-made” from the market but the
contentment and the delight of decorating this
exceptional Thali by one’s own hands produces
in an individual a sense of divine feeling. It gives
immense joy, satisfaction and pleasure to
decorate one yourself. And it fills you with
enchantment and a spiritual feeling while you
invoke divine blessings for yourself and your
loved ones.
The diverse accessories are placed quite
beautifully on the Thali, which the womenfolk of
the house carry in their hands. Thus the Puja
Thali has great importance for the Diwali
celebrations in which the worship of Goddess
Lakshmi is the central theme.
Adorning the Puja Thali is one of the most
interesting activities to perform on Diwali day. It
needs great care, patience and meticulous
attention to detail – in order to aesthetically
arrange and decoratively place all the necessary
items for worship on the thali. During Diwali, this
has traditionally been done since ancient times by
the womenfolk in Indian families.
The Thali decoration is a vital aspect of the
Diwali rituals and hence, much care is taken in
assembling together all the items needed for
decorating the thali. Kids in the Hindu families
greatly enjoy decorating the thali and consider it a
privilege to receive the permission to do so.
However, just before the puja it is up to the ladies
of the home to ensure that the thali is in proper
order; for it must remembered, that all items on the
plate are actually sacred offerings to the deities.
The beautifully designed Diwali Puja Thalis
are simply indispensable in performing worship
during the festival of lights. This is how you can
decorate traditionally a typical Diwali Puja Thali:
1) Take a thali of gold, silver, steel, copper, brass or
any other metal of your choice. The shape can be
round, oval or any other mould of your preference.
2) Take some roli in a small bowl and mix a little
water in it to make a paste and draw with it
religious symbols such as 'Om', 'Swastik' or

'Shree' or images of deities in the middle of
the plate.
3) Cover the entire plate with bright coloured
piece of cotton cloth having a traditional print
(traditional Rajasthani prints look just great) or
designer gift wrap paper sheet. Then draw
traditional designs over it. Play up the corners
of the plate with some lace or zari (a type of
thread made of fine gold or silver wire) of a
colour that is in contrast to the base. You can
also glue glitter and golden sequins to
decorate the thali.
4) Deck up the thali with green betel leaves,
which will make it look beautiful. Then put the
sundry puja accessories on the thali in the right
manner to make it look elegant.
5) Finally, cover the puja thali with petals of
marigold, rose or any other flower used in
sacred Hindu festivals. Decorate various
designs with single colour petals or a
combination of different rangoli colours.

As the Member of Parliament for Auckland Central I am
constantly impressed by the huge contribution that Indian New
Zealanders make to our city and New Zealand. The Diwali
Festival of Lights has a universal appeal which transcends so
many communities within Auckland.
It is an opportunity for all of our communities in Auckland to
come together and celebrate our diverse cultural, religious and
ethnic backgrounds. It is a very special time for many families
who flock to this celebration to experience a unique part of the
rich Indian culture.
People of Indian descent and Indian kiwis should be proud of
the growing number of Aucklanders that want to be part of this
celebration. The first Diwali Festival that I had the privilege of
attending was in 2008 where I was captivated by the people I
met, the colourful dancing and the delicious food. I have long
admired Bollywood dancing and I am sure that will be a
highlight for me of this Festival.
I look forward to meeting some of you at the Festival and being
able to share this wonderful celebration with you.

ethnic groups. Diversity is what makes this city a dynamic and interesting place to live.
The Indian community play an important role in making this city vibrant and they significantly

Diwali is a significant festival in the Indian calendar. Its a time for Indians to gather and celebrate
the achievements of the past year and look forward with hope to the year ahead.
The values of Diwali reflects reconciliation, peace and the triumph of good.

Diwali Festivals around the country creates the prefect opportunity for the Indian Community
to showcase their culture while celebrating this important occasion. It furthers gives us the
chance to acknowledge the contribution of the Indian Community in New Zealand.

Diwali, the Festival of Lights, has long been celebrated as one
of the most important times of the year in the Indian community.
In New Zealand today it is also the opportunity for many others
of us in the wider community to join in to celebrate the culture
and traditions of India.
In a world which continues to face many problems, Diwali
carries an important message for all of us, the victory of light
over darkness symbolizing good prevailing over evil.
It signifies a new beginning and the renewal of life, and hope
for a better world.
I hope Diwali will bring joy to you and your families.
I look forward to Radio Tarana's Bollywood dance competition,
and enjoying the fashion shows, craft displays and wonderful food.
Thank you for the role that Radio Tarana plays and a big thanks
to the Indian community for the contribution it makes to the
richness, diversity and strength of our country.

In every Indian home in New Zealand there will be an air of
excitement as Diwali draws near. Families will be very busy
making arrangements for this special day and week. Many families
will do what they always do on this day and thus continue their
particular family traditions. For others there are now many
opportunities to participate in different public celebrations of Diwali
along with other New Zealanders. It is a source of great satisfaction
that Diwali has become such a public event in New Zealand.
There are many individuals, organisations and institutions that are
now very actively involved in making Diwali a special event for
Indian New Zealanders, and indeed for all New Zealanders. Radio
Tarana is unquestionably the leading avenue for New Zealand
Indians, and indeed others, to get information as well as
entertainment specifically designed for Diwali. I congratulate
Radio Tarana for this leadership and for helping to create this
special sense of community.
Regardless of how families will celebrate Diwali this year I wish
every reader and listener to Radio Tarana a very happy Diwali. I

I am delighted to send my message of felicitation to the Indian community in on the occasion

of celebration of Deepawali (Diwali). The festival symbolizes unity in diversity as every
community celebrates it in its own special way. Diwali been celebrated for ages and grows
in attraction by the year.

Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated with fervour and gaiety and is celebrated with
great enthusiasm by all Indians all over the world. The festival is celebrated by young and
old, rich and poor. The uniqueness of this festival is its harmony of five varied philosophies,
with each day to a special thought or ideal. Deepawali is a festival where people from all
age groups participate.

They give expression to their happiness by lighting earthen 'diyas' (lamps), decorating the
houses, bursting firecrackers and inviting friends and families to their households for
partaking in a sumptuous feast. The lighting of lamps is a way of paying obeisance to god
for attainment of health, wealth, knowledge, peace, valour and fame.

I look forward to joining the New Zealand Indian community in celebrating Dewali in
Aoteroa- New Zealand (the land of long-white cloud).

It is my honour to wish you and your family a happy Diwali
this year.
This is a time to rejoice. The ‘festival of lights’ symbolises the
triumph of good over evil in our world. It serves to remind us that
we must strive to make our communities better places to live in.
Auckland’s growing Indian communities can rightly be proud
of the place you have in our region.
The Indian communities in Auckland are very important to me.
The last census says that 74,442 people in Auckland indentified
as Indian. I have strong links to your community and value
your traditions, history and spirit.
I want special Indian events, such as Diwali, India’s National Day
and Independence Day celebrated by the new Auckland Council.
I will work alongside South East Asian and Indian communities
in the ethnic advisory board and build strong economic and
cultural links with India.
To bring all this together, we need strong inclusive leadership
to make sure people retain their voice and we need to work with
local communities to develop our city.

world and here in New Zealand, it is quickly becoming one of the
important social occasions when Indian cultural performers and
food is provided for all to enjoy with events like this.
Diwali is a holy festival that is celebrated by many in various
forms in various parts of the world as well in different states in
India. Diwali is one of the important times in our life when
we renew our bonds of love and affection by exchange of gifts,
greetings, food and sweets.
Fiji Day marks the celebration of Fijian Culture and this has
become a popular annual event in Auckland.
It is hoped that these events in Auckland will attract the many
different communities so we can build an understanding of the
Indian culture which will assist in "bridging the cultures" so
communities can live together in harmony.

Diwali both old and new is a festival of lights. It’s important
to have some understanding of other religions particularly when
we live in such a diverse country.
When Lord Ram returned, after an absence of 14 years, having
defeated Rawan, lights of all sorts that were around at the time
were lit up.
Individuals clear their houses and cleanse themselves on Diwali
and the Lord Laksmi the God of Wealth, is worshipped. Not to be
forgotten is that Diwali also means togetherness, making up and
reconciliation. It is fascinating to see so far from home and so many
generations later religious practices and events still occur.
Understanding in family values and belief is important.

Diwali in Auckland has become one of our city's great events.
The festival has become more than just a way of celebrating
Indians in New Zealand, but has grown to the point where New
Zealanders are now celebrating Indians. At the last Diwali
festival, I was delighted to see so many crowds of people
celebrating Indian culture, cuisine, the Hindi language and the
faiths of India. My eldest son, only 3 years old at the time was
excited by the sights, sounds and scents of the festival. It was
wonderful to watch, not just because I was on the council that
was assisting with this great event, and not just because I am
part Indian, but because Auckland is coming of age when
European, Chinese and Pacific Aucklanders were learning and
loving the contribution that Indians make to New Zealand.
Indians are increasingly becoming an important factor in the
civic health of Auckland. The ongoing success of the Diwali
Fesitval is a symbol of the political, business and cultural
importance of the Indian Auckland population. Thank you all
to those who support Diwali - especially the Auckland City
Council, Asia NZ, Radio Tarana and Barfoot and Thompson.

Indian community but for everyone in the new Super City of
Auckland.
We now have a city that reflects our multicultural roots and at
this time we will all come together to the brilliance of the lights
as we all share what Diwali has to offer.
It is a time when we as New Zealanders share the understanding
and respecting of the Indian Culture and embrace each other
with our unique differences, but we are all proud New
Zealanders sharing and caring for each other.
Let us take this feeling of oneness into shaping a City that we
all belong to and love and want to develop so that we all have
a share of what we can create as a united community.

Aucklanders of all ages and their families. The Festival
celebrates not only the traditions of Diwali, but the Indian
culture as a whole.

festival of Lights (Diwali 2010).

Diwali, also referred to as Deepawali is celebrated with great passion and happiness all over the
world to mark victory of light over darkness and victory of knowledge over ignorance. Waitakere
Indian Association started with humble beginnings in the year 2000 and at that time this popular
festival of ours was celebrated in a much smaller scale with an average of up to 300 people attending.
It was a time when families and friends gathered together to share their happiness with each other
in smaller groups. However over the last decade, we have seen a tremendous increase in the number
of migrant communities who have chosen to come and live in this beautiful country especially in
the West. One of our objectives has been to share our rich cultural heritage with other communities
and indeed the local people of New Zealand. Hence Waitakere Indian Association has been
emulating this event through its people-oriented activities, which among others include a Hindi
Language School, Cultural classes, Youth development and Senior citizens’ group. Waitakere Indian
Association is also a participant in the New Zealand Action Diversity Programme for this year. Two
of our major celebrations include Diwali the festival of lights and Holi being the festival of colours.

Events such as Diwali, which is celebrated through out New Zealand, play an a impotant part in bringing
people together.

Celebrated with great excitement and grandeur, Diwali or Deepavali is one of the
prime Hindu festivals that unites the whole of India. Know about the different
ways in which this sparkling festival is celebrated in different parts of the country.
North India
According to the great Hindu epic
‘Ramayana’, Diwali is believed to be
the time when Lord Rama defeated and
killed the evil King Ravana and after
passing a period of fourteen years in
exile returned to his capital Ayodhya (in
the Faizabad district of Uttar Pradesh)
on a new moon day of the Kartik
season; with wife Sita and brother
Lakshman. This homecoming of Lord
Rama was celebrated with lights,
fireworks, bursting of crackers
accompanied by much merriment. The
tradition continues to this day in the
northern states of Uttar Pradesh,
Punjab, Haryana, Bihar and the
surrounding areas where huge effigies
of Ravana are burned symbolizing Lord
Rama's vanquishing of the demon king.
Diwali
in India
The Diwali night, in these areas, is a
night of fireworks with sparklers and
crackers of all types burnt throughout
the night. The idols of Goddess
Lakshmi, the symbol of wealth and
prosperity and Lord Ganesha, the
elephant-headed god, the symbol of
auspiciousness and wisdom, are
worshipped in most Hindu homes on
this day. Most of the temples dedicated
to the worship of Lord Rama or Krishna
celebrate Diwali with great piety and
eagerness.
Eastern India
In the eastern region of the country,
Diwali is celebrated with great fanfare.
In Orissa, oil lamps, candles and
lanterns are lit and placed in rows
around individual homes. Crackers are
burst, sparklers lighted and gifts and
sweets distributed by people across the
state. The celebration here is almost
like anywhere in India save for one
ritual that calls upon the spirits of the
family's forefathers. A primitive custom
in this festival includes the burning of
jute stems to light up the dark path that
the spirits of the ancestors supposedly
take to go back to heaven. Most of the
houses are brightly lit and the doors
and windows kept open to welcome
Goddess Lakshmi, who is supposed to
visit every home during this time and is
believed to ignore all places that are
kept dark and abandoned.
In West Bengal, Lakshmi puja is
celebrated earlier than the Diwali
celebrations and the deity celebrated
on this occasion is the fierce Goddess
Kali. "Kali Puja" or the worship of
Goddess Kali is what makes the
celebration in this part of India a unique
one. In Kolkata, the capital of the state,
as well as in all the other parts of West
Bengal, the nights of "Kali Puja" are
marked by high festivities that consist
of activities similar to other regions like
bursting crackers, holding dazzling
fireworks display, lighting rows of
candles and diyas around individual
homes, painting colourful patterns at
the doorstep, dressing up in new
clothes and paying a visit to friends and
relatives. Across the state, makeshift
structures called pandals, (made of
materials such as bamboos, rope and
cloth are erected) which house idols of
Goddess Kali for the two days of
celebration. The actual worship of the
deity is, however, done only for one
night during this festival. It is also
believed that it is the night of the
'Pitripurush' (ancestors) and lamps are
lit on long poles to guide their souls on
this night. But the practice is more
common in rural areas of Bengal than
in cities like Kolkata.
Western India
In the western states of India,
Diwali is a four-day festival, the
preparations for which begin at least 15
days in advance. The markets liven up
almost a whole month in advance for
Diwali shoppers and the shopping
frenzy peaks with the advancement of
the occasion.

On the night preceding Diwali,
Gujaratis start celebrations by creating
designs depicting images associated to
the festival like deities, sun and flowers
from natural powder colours (called
"Rangoli") in their verandas. Images of
small footprints are also drawn over
individual doorsteps which is supposed
to be a way of inviting Goddess
Lakshmi to the house.
On the first day, Narakchaturdashi,
fruits are smashed and crackers burst
to symbolize the killing of the evil
demon Narakasur. On Lakshmi Pujan,
the second and most important day of
Diwali, Hindu homes all over the
western region of India worship the
idols of Lord Ganesh (deity of
auspiciousness and wisdom) and
Goddess Lakshmi (deity of wealth and
prosperity) or symbols of them like
currency notes and gold. The third day,
Padawa, is considered to be one of the
most auspicious days of the year in
states like Maharashtra, and is held to
be propitious for beginning any
important task. This is the day for
shopping, lighting diyas (earthen
lamps) and performing tilak ceremony.
In Gujarat, this is the New Year day
when people visit each other to wish a
new beginning. Bhau Beej is the last
day of the festival that signifies sibling-
bonding and the celebrations during
this day is quite akin to Rakhi, another
great Indian festival standing for the
brother-sister relationship. Unlike
Raksha Bandhan however, which is a

day before, when the oven is
cleaned, smeared with lime, religious
symbols drawn on it and then filled
with water for the next day's oil bath.
Individual homes are washed and
decorated with kolam designs (akin
to rangoli patterns in North India).
Firecrackers and new apparels are
kept on a plate to be used on the
following day. On the morning of
Naraka chaturdashi, the actual
celebrations begin with an early
morning oil bath before sunrise.

Diwali has become synonymous
with cultural festivities initially in
Auckland and now in whole of
New Zealand. It gives everyone
immense pleasure that the festival
is celebrated with such gusto by
all age groups and ethnicities. It
truly complements the multi-
textured fabric of New Zealand
culture.
Our Manukau Indian
Association has been working to
“Empower the Indians in NZ” for
more than three decades. It
evolved from South Auckland
Indian Cultural Society. The
society was formed in 1980 by a
group of Indian families who had a
common desire to maintain their
cultural heritage and the bonding
with their roots in India. The
Manukau Indian Association has
come a long way from its
beginnings. The MIA conducts
many activities connected with
everybody of Indian origin. These
include Manukau Diwali which has
become a hallmark in last few
years. Apart from this, the members
get together on Indian
Independence Day, Holi festival,
Baisakhi, Navratri festival and
participate in the local community
events like the Christmas Parade.
Now MIA is embarking on
expanding its services from another
large community centre at 57
Hillside Road. This is an ambitious
project requiring funds of close to
$300,000. The place is good for
medium sized functions and has
excellent parking. It is quite easily
accessible from motorway 20 as
well is close to Papatoetoe.

Fifteen years ago, it was a dream.
The Indian community, which boasted
of successful entrepreneurs, investors,
business leaders and thinkers of world-
class reputation, did not have its own
medium of communication. There were no
newspapers, radio stations and television
channels that were for, by and of Indian
people. It was paradoxical that people from
the world’s largest democracy with a
thriving media industry did not have a
presence in a country which subscribes to
ferociously independent press.
It was to fill a void, give vent to people’s
thoughts and opinions and entertain them
that Radio Tarana was born.
Establishing the first enterprise in an
unknown territory is a tough task, for such a
venture will be shrouded by uncertainties
and scarce human, financial and material
resources. No one would know if the ship
would float or sink in unchartered waters.
It is always easy for someone to
imitate, plagiarise and replicate a successful
enterprise. That has been the case with
Radio Tarana and Indian Newslink, the first
and foremost newspaper of the Indian
community in New Zealand.
I have always believed in fair and
healthy competition, because it sets the
pitch for every player to score; but
unfortunately, it is never so; there is always
someone to queer the pitch and lower
standards and income.
But the tough will always get going, no
matter how tough the going gets.
I look back the 14 years of my journey with
Radio Tarana with a sense of pride,
satisfaction and fulfillment. Start up of a new
venture is almost always wrought with the
proverbial paucity of finance, with no one,
least of all commercial banks, willing to
help. The stakes are high and no one wants
to underwrite the risk.
This radio station was built on
teamwork and cooperative spirit. No one is
conscious of the fact that it is a sole-
proprietorship, owner-managed company.
Each of us (that includes me) has a target
to achieve with a focus on one most
important factor: our customers.
We began as a ‘few-hours-only’ radio
station to test the market and understand
the needs of our people before
progressively increasing broadcasting time.
Six years ago (on June 1, 2004), Radio
Tarana became broadcasting 24-hours
throughout the year (Indian Newslink called
it a ‘Sleepless Station’ in its May 15, 2004
issue). The round-the-clock operation
enabled us to add variety, complement staff
and improve our product and service
delivery.
We began to make waves and be noticed.
The May 2000 coup in Fiji is a prime
example.
We were the first to flash the news
across the world. We pooled our resources,
dispatched staff to be on the ground and
report. We were the main source of news
and information, for a while at least, to the
New Zealand media, including Newstalk
ZB, TV1 and TV3.
Since then, our news segment has
expanded, with dedicated reporters and
newsreaders for hourly updates.
Film stars and celebrities have a huge
fan following in every society and the Indian
community is no exception. Radio Tarana is
arguably the only station in the South
Pacific region to have the voices of almost
every major film star – from Amitabh
Bachchan to the newest actor – they greet
and at times entertain our listeners.
Ameen Sayani, the doyen of the Indian
entertainment industry, has been a Tarana
star for the past six years. His programme,
Sangeet kay sitaron ki mehfil is being aired
between songs throughout the week, with
repeats, culminating in a weekly time slot of
longer duration.
Radio Tarana is a ‘We’ station – there is
no scope for ‘I’ here; we work, debate,
improve, improvise and deliver as a team.
Each of us has areas of responsibilities,
targets and tasks. We share credits as a team,
while as the Managing Director, I accept the
blame for lapses and shortcomings.
Professional and trade bodies and
other organisations have, in recent years,
found us worthy of awards, citations and
accolades. We received the ‘Special
Recognition Award for Community
Broadcasting’ at the annual Radio New
Zealand Awards 2008. During the same
year, our Presenter Satend Sharma
received the ‘Best Foreign Language
Programme Award,’ the first ever by an
Indian broadcaster.
Radio Tarana has retained its Number
One position among Indian radio stations as
the top language broadcaster in the Greater
Auckland region in the latest Research
International Australia and New Zealand
Survey.
The Radio Industry Research Committee
manages the annual Survey for Research
International Australia and New Zealand to
determine the major players in the
commercial radio broadcasting sector.
It found an increase in the listenership
of the Radio Tarana during 2010.
According to the Survey, Radio Tarana had
3.7% of the commercial radio market share.
With over 60,600 listeners weekly in
Auckland, the station also retained its No 1
spot as the premier Language Broadcaster
in the country.
This is no mean achievement. It shows
that we are committed to adding value to
whatever service we provide.
It also shows our penchant for progress
and customer satisfaction.
As we step into our 15th year, I wish to
express my gratitude to our advertisers,
sponsors, well-wishers, my team at Radio
Tarana and most important of all, our listeners
for their support and patronage since the first
words went on air 14 years ago.
Listener is a strange word.
In fact, we should be called the Listener,
because we listen to you all the time,

2 cups All purpose flour (maida) 2 cups cashewnuts soaked in 1 kg Carrots For Bhallas:

1/4th tsp. baking powder 1 cup powdered sugar 1 teaspoon Cardamom seeds Salt to taste
2 tbsp curd (plain yogurt) 1 tbsp. Ghee 3/4 cup Water Oil to fry
11/4th cups warm water 1/2 tsp. cardamom powder 3 tablespoons Ghee
1/2 tsp. saffron threads, slowly dry-roasted Silver Varak for decoration 2 tablespoons Raisins For Dahi:

Ingredients
1/2 kg Wheat Flour
11/2 cups Water
1/2 tsp Ajwain
2 tbsp Oil
Oil for frying as required
Salt according to taste

Method
1.Sieve the wheat flour and rub the oil into it.

2. Then add the salt, Ajwain and mix well.

3. Make a well in the center, add enough

water and knead into a stiff dough.

4. Heat oil in a kadhai, to smoking point.

5. Roll out the dough into big size Chapati

(flat round Indian bread)and cut it into long
strips.

6. Now put these long strips into the hot oil.

7. Remove from the oil when crisp and

golden brown in color.

8. Drain on tissue paper, cool and store in

airtight containers.
