All summer programs are for children entering the listed grades in school year '19-'20.

WHAT IS A WILDCARD ACTIVITY?


The Wildcard Activity is a chance for students to self-select an art or performance-
based elective that they do not generally get to experience during their day!
Students will choose their Wildcard Activity at the beginning of the week and get
the chance to learn a fun new skill in mixed-age groups of students.

GUIDE TO SUMMER K-2 PROGRAMS

ArtVenturers: Each week, ArtVenturers explore a theme through theatre, visual arts,
and music! In this integrated arts program, participants rotate daily through these
three creative components, as they collaborate on a showcase that combines all of
their artistic experiences.

Broadway Bootcamp Junior*: Broadway Bootcamp Junior is a new, exciting


opportunity for our youngest students to collaborate as an ensemble towards the
production of a musical! Participants in this two-week intensive program will develop
musical theatre performance skills, design their own sets and props, and build
confidence, creativity, and teamwork, culminating a performance at the end of the
second week.
*NOTE: This program is for grades K-3.

Tiny Triple Threats: Sing! Dance! Design! In Tiny Triple Threats, our youngest
participants get a chance to experience the many aspects of theatrical production.
During their day, participants rotate through singing and dancing, artwork and
design, and acting programs, as they work together to combine these into a one-of-
a-kind mini-performance.

Story Explorers: In Story Explorers, participants rotate through three programs as


they explore new media through the lens of their favorite stories. They engage their
imaginations and hands to make several pieces of literature-related art and have the
opportunity to dramatize a familiar story through acting, song and dance to bringing
their artwork to life!

would you do if YOU ran the zoo? This program combines the whimsical works and
words of Dr. Seuss with playful exploration of animals and creatures of all types. Sing a
song of sneetches, build a bippo-no-bungus, and invent a marvelous menagerie not yet
known to this world! This program culminates in an imaginative showcase and exhibit on
Friday for family and friends.

In this favorite WCT program, participants become screenwriters, directors, and movie

What A Relief (Gr 5-8) VS01E19


Printmaking, the original way of making a stamp to create multiple copies of an image,
is a fascinating artform that is easier than it looks! Participants in this week-long
program draw, carve, assemble, and print their own images through techniques ranging
from relief block printing to collograph to monoprinting! (Don’t know what those words
mean? You will!) Participants will have the opportunity to print on various kinds of paper
and even fabric. This program culminates in an exhibit on Friday for family and friends.

Construct a robot from your imagination, feel what it is like to be part of a large
machine, and create something to make the future better! Participants engage in all
kinds of inventive thinking in this week that looks behind the beep, beep, bop of robots
and machines! This program culminates in an imaginative showcase and exhibit on
Friday for family and friends.

Shake up your favorite stories in this fast-paced program that combines playwriting and
acting skills! Participants will work together to write an original script that mashes up

Lots Of Knots (Gr 3-4) VS02C19


Knitting, weaving, macrame! Yarn and string can be used for so much more than
friendship bracelets (although participants can make those too)! Learn the secrets of
these ancient art forms that have brought communities together and have recently
taken a modern turn. Participants explore a variety of fiber arts in this abbreviated but
exciting program! This program culminates in an exhibit on Friday for family and friends.

3-2-1 Flash Mob! (Gr 5-8) VS02D19


This one-of-a-kind program takes a fast and furious a look at the amazing phenomenon
of the flash mob, in order to plan and execute its very own! Participants may find
themselves writing songs, creating choreography, scouting locations, and planning
other top-secret details. The flash mob comes to life on the third and final day of the
program!

A blank page can be boring but it can also hold tremendous potential! Will it be the

Broadway Bootcamp Junior is a new, exciting opportunity for our youngest students to
collaborate towards the production of a musical! Sing, dance, and act your way through
the charming musical A Frog Named Sam by beloved local children’s musician Ben
Rudnick. Participants in this intensive program will develop performance skills, design
their own sets and props, and build confidence, creativity, and teamwork! The final
performance will take place on the afternoon of Friday, July 19.

Break A Leg Troupe (Gr 4-8) VS03B19


The Break A Leg Troupe is back! In this fast-paced two-week program, participants will
take a favorite work of literature and transform it into a one-of-a-kind theatre piece!
Participants will explore the roles of playwright, actor, designer, and more! Then, during
the final days of the program, the Break A Leg Troupe will tour to local libraries and
perform for public audiences. Participants will also perform for family and friends at the
MCA on the final Friday afternoon.

A spinning clay blob becoming a beautiful, useful object is a magical process.

Graphic art uses the power of both words and pictures to communicate. Participants in
this popular MCA program develop storytelling and drawing skills while crafting stories,

participants learn to tell stories in a whole new way! This program culminates in an

Sing! Dance! Design! In Tiny Triple Threats, our youngest participants get a chance to
experience the many aspects of theatrical production. Participants dance, draw, and dive
into cultures from all over the world! Through Aboriginal art of Australia or the Batiks of
Zimbabwe, participants engage in cultural awareness through art making. This program
culminates in an imaginative showcase and exhibit on Friday for family and friends.

Dust off that quill pen and get ready to draft a one-of-a-kind Shakespearean epic worthy
of the Globe Theatre! Participants in this two-week program will dive into Shakespeare’s
classic characters and playful plotlines, and then devise their own ensemble-based
performance inspired by the great Bard’s timeless tales and unique style. Make ol’ Billy
Shakes proud -- the piece premieres on Friday at the end of the second week.

Plaids from Scotland, kente cloths from Ghana, Moroccan mosaics, and Indian mehndi
- all of these art patterns are important parts of cultures from around the world. During
this week-long world tour, participants explore cultures near and far to examine patterns
of all kinds and even create their own! This program culminates in an exhibit on Friday

Light, texture, scale--these are all things architects and designers must take into
account when creating the places and spaces of our world. Participants in this program

their bodies, voices, and imaginations, participants will bring the big top to life, as they

Crafting a piece of art or a wearable garment takes a special combination of creativity
and skill. Participants in this week-long exploration of fiber arts try their hand at hand

exhibit on Friday for family and friends.

Participants in this program take inspiration from the “Please Touch the Art” exhibit to
create art that asks to be touched and interacted with! Artists use pinch pots, coils,

Sing! Dance! Design! In Tiny Triple Threats, our youngest participants get a chance
to experience the many aspects of theatrical production. I have a feeling we’re not in
Watertown anymore! Take a tour of the Emerald City, build a Yellow Brick Road, or
transform into a musical munchkin in this program celebrating the whimsical world of L.
Frank Baum’s beloved Oz stories through the performing and visual arts. This program
culminates in an imaginative showcase and exhibit on Friday for family and friends.

Broadway Bootcamp Session 1 (Gr 3-8) VS07B19


This smash hit summer program is an exciting opportunity to mount a musical on the
MainStage in just two weeks! Celebrate the circle of life in the cast of The Lion King Jr.!
The ensemble will bring this timeless tale of lions, hyenas, pride, and identity to the
stage in new and creative ways. This musical intensive will have participants singing,
dancing, and acting their way to a performance on August 16. In addition to playing a
role onstage, all participants will work on backstage committees to bring costumes,
props, and other production elements to life! Please note this is the first of 2 sessions of
Broadway Bootcamp, each lasting 2 weeks.

Drawing and painting are the bedrock upon which many visual arts are built! Draw and
paint in both familiar and challenging ways - painting from a distance or even making
marks by taking color away. Participants in this program go beyond their comfort zone
and stretch their ideas of art. This program culminates in an exhibit on Friday for family

In Story Explorers, participants explore new media of art through the lens of their
favorite stories. Follow the whimsical lead of Shel Silverstein in this playful week of fun
times and rhymes! Participants explore the words and drawings of this iconic artist as
they create their own wacky world of art. This program culminates in an imaginative
showcase and exhibit on Friday for family and friends.

Needles, thread, fabric and imagination converge during this favorite program!
Participants explore hand sewing and embroidery, fabric dyeing, machine sewing, and

the end of the program. No previous experience necessary. This program culminates in

In Story Explorers, participants explore new media of art through the lens of their
favorite stories. Draw inspiration from the current MCA exhibit, “Please Touch the
Art,” where viewers are encouraged to use senses other than sight to experience the
art. Participants get in touch with all of their senses to create art that can be touched,
heard, smelled and more! This program culminates in an imaginative showcase and
exhibit on Friday for family and friends.

Broadway Bootcamp Session 2 (Gr 3-8) VS09B19


This smash hit summer program is an exciting opportunity to mount a musical on the
MainStage in just two weeks! Oh my god, you guys! Join the cast of the fun and fresh
musical Legally Blonde Jr., a sassy story that smashes stereotypes as pink purses and
Harvard law briefcases collide! This musical intensive will have participants singing,
dancing, and acting their way to a performance on August 30. In addition to playing a
role onstage, all participants will work on backstage committees to bring costumes,
props, and other production elements to life! Please note this is the second of 2 sessions
of Broadway Bootcamp, each lasting 2 weeks.

WCT’s Teen Musical Institute offers motivated teen performers the opportunity to
sharpen their performance skills as they collaborate towards a fully-staged performance
of Chicago on our MainStage! Participants in this three-week program will focus
intensively on character creation, text analysis, musicality and movement, culminating
in a performance on Thursday August 1 at 7 pm. This is an application-based program.

Punch, slap, and parry your way through the fundamentals of stage combat!
Participants in this fast-paced, physical intensive will learn techniques for armed and
