ABSTRACT - The purpose of our lab was to study how homeostasis affects the human body.

homeostasis is an organism’s process of maintaining a stable internal environment suitable for
sustaining life. our group chose how to show homeostasis in the circulatory system by recording
heart rate after running, walking, and holding our breath. After conducting three trials, we
concluded that heart rate through exercise proves homeostasis because heart rate has an increase
during physical activity and returns back to the normal state in roughly 4-8 minutes based on
cardiovascular health. During the trial one, the starting heart rate was 84 BPM, increasing to 156
BPM directly after running 2 laps around San Marin High School’s track, 108 BPM after 4
minutes, and then returned to 84 BPM 8 minutes after running. After gathering our data, we
concluded that homeostasis is relevant during physical activity because it helps humans maintain
a stable internal environment which we proved by examining heart rate after increments of time.

INTRO - Homeostasis in the circulatory system occurs when the heart pumps oxygenated blood
to all parts of the body. It then contracts and sucks the deoxygenated blood back into the heart to
be reoxygenated. This project’s reason for study increased our knowledge about homeostasis by
conducting a lab using multiple procedure steps to prove homeostasis is relevant in the
circulatory body system. Our hypothesis was if you run or walk, then your heart rate will
increase. We predicted heart rate will increase while running, walking, but decrease while
holding breath.

METHODS - Creating trials while walking, running, and holding breath, our group found out
how homeostasis affects the human body after exercising. When asked what are we going to do
for this project, we created a fool proof procedure to find all of our needed information. The
procedure consisted of a test on holding breath for a minute, run two laps on the track, and speed
walk two laps on the track. We chose these procedures because it was the most significant
procedure we could do at school to get the data we needed. Running, walking, and holding
breath create a controlled test for homeostasis. Homeostasis was found and proven by resting
after exercise to return our bodies to normal heart BPM.
RESULTS -
Procedure: Test by holding breath for a minute, running two laps around the track, and walking
two laps around the track.
