Objective The student will investigate and understand that matter is anything that has mass

and takes up space; and occurs as a solid, liquid, or gas. Key concepts include
b) the effect of temperature on the phases of matter;
d) molecules and compounds
Online This is an asynchronous course done through Blackboard, where the teacher has
Activity provided weekly online presentations, as well as recorded lessons covering each
new topic. The teacher will record a lesson on the phase changes of water, and
the effects of temperature on the actions of the molecules. Students will view the
video as part of their lesson for the week.

After they have viewed the lesson, students will be directed to

https://www.explorelearning.com/ where they will have a pre-generated student
account and sign into the class. Students will then select the “Phases of Water”
Gizmo. With this simulation students will be able to add heat or chill the water to
the point where they see it make a phase change. Also, students will use the
microscope feature to observe the behavior of the molecules as heat is added or
taken away. After the simulation, students will create a journal post on
Blackboard (Journal posts can only be seen by the teacher and the student) with a
short explanation of what they learned from the simulation; such as the
temperature at which water freezes or boils, or what happens to the water
molecules when viewed through the microscope.
Pedagogy

With the assistance of the visual aid, and once students finish the simulation they
should have a higher understanding of the effects of heat on phase changes.
