Instructions to Authors
1. Manuscripts can be submitted as standard articles or short
communications in English only. Manuscripts should be sent by
mail (in triplicate) or as pdf file (one single pdf) to one of the As-
sociate Editors, considering their fields of interest, or directly to
the Editors in Leoben or Berlin.
2. Electronic submission of manuscripts is encouraged. Please
note that electronic processing of manuscripts proceeds in two
stages. (a). Requirements for electronic submission for review is
given under “3” below. (b) Accepted manuscripts for the printers
must adhere to requirements pointed out in the Technical instruc-
tions on the next page.
3. Please send your electronic manuscript as single pdf file and
prepare the content of your paper in exactly the same way as for
conventional submissions (following the Instructions to Authors)
ensuring that all of your illustrations, tables etc. are included in a
single file with the main text. Half-tone or color figures in the pdf
file should be ⱕ 120 dpi to keep the file at a size suitable for sending
by e-mail for reviewing. Please try to ensure that the size of your
file does not exceed 1 MB. Name the file xxx.pdf, where xxx is the
surname of the first author (no more than 15 characters, no spaces).
When you make subsequent submission to the system, please add
increasing digits to the end of the file names.
4. The length of standard articles is limited to 16 printed pages in-
cluding figures and tables.
5. Short communications, not exceeding 6 printed pages including
figures and tables, will be reviewed by one referee only; they can be
published within roughly four months after acceptance.
6. Manuscripts should be typed in double-spacing on one side of
the page only, leaving ample margins on all sides.
7. The title page should show the title of the paper, the name(s) of
the author(s), the institutes (laboratories, companies) in which the
work was done, and space for the insertion of “Received” and “Ac-
cepted” dates.
8. At the end of the text the complete addresses of all authors (in-
cluding e-mail address) should be given.
9. Each manuscript should be accompanied by a short summary
(200 words at most).
10. Please make sure that the standard of English is that expected
in an international journal. Bad linguistic presentation can lead to
considerable delays.
11. The illustrations, numbered consecutively, should be added on
separate sheets. Their number should be kept as low as possible:
more than 8 figures can only be accepted on approval by the Editor/
Associate Editor. A limited number of color pages are available per
year at the discretion of the Editors. Otherwise, figures can only be
printed in color if paid for by the author(s).
12. Illustrations should be original drawings, high-quality prints or
photographs on glossy paper. Maximum size of illustrations is A4
(210 x 297 mm). Please make sure that lettering is of sufficient size
to stand reduction to one half or even one quarter of the original.
Each illustration requires a legend listed on a separate sheet.
13. Tables (not more than 3 pages per 16 pages of text): please note
that the maximum display area is 155 mm x 215 mm. Long
appendices, tabulations etc. and additional electronic material
(movies etc.) can be made available electronically but not in hard copy.
14. References cited in text should be listed at the end of the paper
in alphabetical order.
Mineralogy
and Petrology
(a) Books and book sections: Names, initials of all authors
(editors), year of publication, full title, edition, publisher, and place
of publication.

References in the text must be given with authors’ names (in ital-
ics) and year of publication, e.g. Laves (1949). If within the same
year more than one publication of an author is cited, it should be
distinguished by a, b, … after the year.
Please refer to the current issue of the journal for the detailed
format for presenting references.
15. Open Choice Publication. In addition to the normal publication
process (whereby an article is submitted to the journal and access to
that article is granted to customers who have purchased a subscrip-
tion), Springer now provides an alternative publishing option:
Springer Open Choice. A Springer Open Choice article receives all
the benefits of a regular ‘subscription-based’ article, but in addition
is made available publicly through Springer’s online platform
SpringerLink. To publish via Springer Open Choice, upon acceptan-
ce please visit www.springeronline.com/openchoice to complete the
relevant order form and provide the required payment information.
Payment must be received in full before publication or articles will
be published as regular subscription-model articles. We regret that
Springer Open Choice cannot be ordered for published articles.
16. Proofreading. Authors should make their proof corrections on
a printout of the pdf file supplied, checking that the text is complete
and that all figures and tables are included. After online publication,
further changes can only be made in the form of an Erratum, which
will be hyperlinked to the article.
The author is entitled to formal corrections only. Substantial
changes in content, e.g. new results, corrected values, title and
authorship are not allowed without the approval of the Editors. In
such a case please contact the Editors before returning the proofs to
the publisher.
17. Electronic supplementary material. Data such as black-and-
white or colour illustrations and large tables that are not essential for
the understanding of a printed article but yet of interest can be put on
Springer-Verlag's server. Such material has to be submitted in elec-
tronic form (see the Technical instructions for manuscripts and illu-
strations in electronic form) and will also be reviewed. Reference to
this material will be given with the printed article.
18. Authors receive 50 offprints free of charge. The order for off-
prints against payment must be sent back together with corrected
proofs.When you order offprints against payment you are entitled
to receive in addition a PDF file of your article for your own per-
sonal use.
19. This journal follows the rules of the Commission on New
Minerals and Mineral Names of IMA in all matters concerning
mineral names and nomenclature.
Technical instructions for manuscripts and
illustrations in electronic form

Text

Submit the digital file of your paper together with the corresponding
printout containing the final version of your work. To organize the
structure of your paper, please follow the detailed “Instructions to
Authors”. Save your data either as PC-compatible text format such as
Word 95/97/00/XP or RTF (Rich Text Format) or as Word for Macintosh.
If you have used LaTex for your paper, you can send this file together
with your text version.

Layout guidelines
– Place figure captions and tables at the end of the paper
consecutively numbered according to the numbering in the text.
– Do not include field functions (except for equations) and use normal
plain fonts (e.g., Times New Roman, Helvetica …) for the text and
labelling of the figures.
– For textual emphasis italics or bold face types can be used.

Figures

Submit all figures as separate files (with printouts) and do not integrate
them into the text file; the file names should include the relevant
number of the figure.

Technical guidelines
– Halftone figures: For an acceptable reproduction in color a resolution
of 300 dpi is necessary. The figures must be converted in CMYK-
model and stored as tiff-file (24 bit). Monotone figures must be
stored in grayscale model (8 bit) with the same final resolution.
– Line drawings: All figures (colored or black & white) including line
arts and text labellings created with a drawing programme (Adobe
Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand, CorelDraw) should be stored with
a resolution not less than 800–1200 dpi in eps-format. The used fonts
must be embedded in the file to avoid changes or lost characters.
Do not use presentation programmes (e.g., PowerPoint ...) or files
downloaded from the internet to submit figures; in most cases data
cannot be processed.
