Congratulations, Lake Monticello, You Did It Again!

The Rural Virginian’s Readers’ Choice Awards is in its third year, and for the third year your
votes put Lake Monticello on top in two categories: You voted the Lake Monticello Golf
Course your Favorite Golf Course (3rd year), and Lake Monticello your Favorite Place for
Family Fun (2nd year in first place after second place the 1st year). Congratulations also to the
Ashlawn Grille, voted Favorite Place to Eat Dinner and Favorite Servers and Wait Staff, and
to the Eagles Nest, voted third place for both Favorite Place for Breakfast and Favorite Place
for Outdoor Dining. See this week’s issue of the Rural Virginian for details.

Update on Fluvanna BOS Matters: At its meeting on Oct. 20, the Fluvanna Board of Supervisors considered two items that
directly affect Lake Monticello:
1) The BOS denied the request from developers of the land across from the Lake’s main gate to loosen age restrictions and to delay
construction of turn lanes to entrance.
2) The proposal to enter into a land swap with LMOA is going forward. More information will be published as available.

Next 2011 Budget Meeting: On Tues., Oct. 26, in the Faulconer Room, the Finance Committee, Board of Directors and Staff
will continue to review the proposed 2011 operations budget. Members are welcome to attend budget development meetings. Time will
be allotted for member comments.
Eagles Nest Supports LM Fire & Rescue: On Sun. Oct. 24, from 10AM to 12N, ten percent of Eagles Nest sales will go
to the Fire & Rescue Squads. Please come out and help make this fundraiser a real community effort.

needed. Contact Trish to volunteer.

2010 Trick-or-Treating at Lake Monticello will take place from 4 to 8PM on Sun., Oct. 31. Parents, please note that,
for the safety of the trick-or-treaters, no candy will be given out at the Main Gate.

GOLF NEWS
Pumpkin Scramble will be held on Sun., Oct. 31, with a 10AM shotgun start. The tournament is open to both men and women.
Entry fee for the 16-hole captain’s choice is $5 plus regular golf fees. Individual sign-ups required; the Pro Shop will pair the teams.
FREE Golf Course Tour: Golf Pro Mark Marshall and members of the Golf Committee will be conducting a guided riding tour of
the entire golf course on Sun., Nov. 7. Please sign up in advance by phoning the Pro Shop at 589-3075 by Fri., Nov. 5.

Deer Mating Season (Rut) Is Underway: From now through December, deer are on the move, often with no regard for
what’s going on around them. Please drive with extra care in and around the Lake, using high beams when practical to increase visibility.
Please do not feed or approach deer at any time, but especially during rut. Bucks are very territorial and can be aggressive toward humans
and pets

End of Year Committee Vacancies

At the end of each year, terms expire on LMOA’s 15 permanent committees. At the present time, there are six operating and nine
advisory committees that will be looking for members to volunteer for important community service. If you are interested in committee
work and have not filled out a Committee Resource form in the last two years, please do so. Mark all the committees that interest you,
and return the form to the Administration Office. Committees will be formulating their recommendations soon for Board vote in
November and December, so don’t delay. The form includes brief summaries of individual committee responsibilities. For more
information, see the committee charters in Chapter 16 of the Policy Manual in the Reading Files or at www.lmoa.org under Library,
Governing Documents, Policy Manual. Permanent committees include: Audit; Broadcast; Buildings, Roads and Grounds; Compliance;
Elections; Environmental Control; Finance; Golf; Investment; Lake Preservation; Planning; Safety and Security; Solicitation and
Contract Review; Storm Water Management; Wildlife Management.

What’s Wrong with this Story? A Lake resident was overheard telling a companion that she thought it was too much to ask
that she keep her dog from using a neighbor’s lawn as his bathroom. After all, she couldn’t possibly know where he goes or what he
does when she lets him out to run several times a day.
A responsible pet owner would not let his/her pet – dog, cat or otherwise – run at large:
y It isn’t safe for the pet because of numerous dangers including predators, other dogs and motor vehicles.
y It isn’t in the best interest of good neighborly relations.
y It violates LMOA policy that requires pets to be on a leash at all times when off the owner’s property.
Be a responsible pet owner: Keep your pets under control and avoid the problems that loose pets can cause.
Scoop that Poop: LMOA policy also requires that owners pick up, remove and dispose of their pets’ droppings appropriately. Please
respect the policy that requires you to clean up after your pet, and respect your neighbors who otherwise must either clean it up
themselves or live with the odor and mess left behind.

Use of LMOA Meeting Space: If your group, committee or organization uses LMOA meeting space, please remember that
courtesy is a must. Many meetings and activities of differing sizes take place in the Clubhouse each week. Because of the demand for
space, it is sometimes necessary to relocate a group in order to accommodate everyone. This can be a tedious juggling act, so it’s
important that everyone meet in the space scheduled for them. Please check the Schedule of Events on the Friday Flyer to confirm the
space scheduled for your activity. Occupying space not assigned to you can create problems that can affect numerous others.
