INFORMATION ON BANGKOK
Your tickets are booked, the excitement is mounting... You're coming to Bangkok!
It's a fascinating, intoxicating and chaotic place, brimming with sights, smells, thrills, gracious
people, contradictions, cultures, cars, noise and bedlam.
The 'City of Angels' has funky markets, up market malls, a riverside full of surprises, a vibrant
nightlife scene, many fabulous sights and attractions that reflect its unique heritage, and much,
much more… Bangkok's traffic jams are notorious. But its modern sky train and underground
systems have made it much easier - and quicker - to get around. A trip in a tuk-tuk remains a big
novelty too, while river taxis (boat taxis) offer an exciting alternative to explore the riverside
area. Whether your trip is for business or pleasure, Bangkok bursts with exciting options. The
most popular areas for visitors are Siam, Silom, Sukhumvit Road, Sathorn, Chidlom-Ploenchit,
Pratunam and the Riverside - all charismatic parts of town that combine sights, nightlife,
shopping, great hotels and convenient locations with access to public transport.
Important Phrases in Thai

Since you are going to Thailand on holiday and you don't have much time to learn many phrases, we have
compiled what we think is the Top 10 Most Useful Phrases for your holiday in Thailand. To make a request
or greeting sound more polite, male people should add "khrab" to the end of a sentence and female
"kaa".

• Hello (sa-wat dee)

For sure this is the word that all tourists need to learn first. It is used for both "hello" and "goodbye”.
• Thank you (khorb koon)
When you are in Thailand don't forget you are representing your country so please always try to be polite.
This is a useful word to say "thank you" if someone gives you something
• How much? (gee baht)
If you are shopping you will need to ask "how much?" You don't really need to learn "...is this?" or "...is
that?" as you can use sign language at the same time
• Where is ...? (... yoo tee nai)
I think you will find this phrase very useful. Just point at a place on your map or in your guide book and say
"yoo tee nai". Also useful when you are trying to find the right bus to go to Phuket etc
• I don't want (mai ow)
When you are walking down the street or even sitting on the train you will sometimes be approached by
vendors who are trying to sell you something. Some of them are very insistent so try this useful phrase
• Sorry (khor toat)
Another useful phrase to help you be polite. Use this when you have to push by someone on the train or you
accidentally stepped on their feet
• One-ten (neung-sib)
I recommend to everyone that they should at least learn how to count up to ten
• Can you make it cheaper? (lot noi dai mai)
If you are doing a lot of shopping then try this handy phrase. By speaking a little Thai you might get a
better discount
• Delicious (a-roi)
After a delicious meal the cook would love to hear that you found the food delicious. You never know, the
next time you go back to the same place she might give you an extra helping!
• Never mind (mai ben rai)
One of my favorites. If someone apologizes to you for doing something wrong (khor toat) reply with "mai
ben rai". If someone says "thank you" for a present just say "mai ben rai.

Do's and Don'ts for Thailand
DO respect Thai customs. While Thais are generally forgiving towards visitors disrespect
towards images of Buddha or the Royal Family will not be tolerated.

DO remove your shoes when entering a Thai home. This is not only a religious custom but
also has practical consequences. It is also rude to point your feet at anyone or use your
feet to make any sort of indication.

DON'T do or say anything that may offend the Royal Family. The King and the Royal
Family are held in highest regard by Thais. The same behavior applies to any object - such
as money bearing the King's image.

DO show respect at all times for Buddhism and anything associated with the Buddhist
religion. Shorts, sleeveless, and slippers are unacceptable when entering Buddhist temples.

DON'T export any Buddha images, works of art or antiques.

DON'T initiate a 'wai', only reply to one. Do not 'wai' servants and children. A 'Wai' is the
traditional Thai greeting of placing the hands together.

DON'T drink the tap water. Bottled water is available everywhere.

DO ensure you have adequate travel insurance and that it covers both medical treatment
and unexpected losses/expenses/theft.

DON'T carry anything through customs for anyone else unless you know the contents.
Penalties for drug trafficking are severe.

DO follow common sense health precautions and check with your local doctor on current
vaccination recommendations for traveling within Thailand.

DO take care of your valuables at all times and report any loss immediately to the nearest
tourist police office.

DON'T buy gemstones or jewelry unless it is from a reputable dealer. Many sophisticated
scams have sprung up over recent years. Whether the tout is dressed as a student, a monk
or a policeman, identity card and all deal only with a registered gemstone dealer.

DO be careful with your passport. Be on guard against pickpockets or inadvertent loss.

DON'T overstay. Fines are imposed for each day you stay in Thailand beyond the date of
the visa expiry, currently Baht 200 per day.

DO be careful when driving in Thailand. Only use car hire companies which offer full
insurance coverage.

DON’T carry Foodstuffs (particularly fruit, meats, and canned goods) & Plants (vegetables,
seeds, tropical plants/flowers etc.)
