The Yellow Vest Convoy is heading to Ottawa, and
will be passing through Strathmore on Thursday, Feb.
14.
According to convoy manager Glen Carritt, it is
hoped the convoy will create awareness for the oil
and gas industry.
“The convoy is meant to create attention, to get
people onboard and unite Canada,” said Glen Carritt.
“But it’s not just oil and gas. It’s everybody that’s af-
fected by today’s current governments.”
Carritt said the group wants a repeal of bill C48 (Oil
Tanker Moratorium Act: An Act respecting the regu-
lation of vessels that transport crude oil or persistent
oil to or from ports or marine installations located
along British Columbia’s north coast); and a repeal of
bill C69 (An Act to enact the Impact Assessment Act
and the Canadian Energy Regulator Act, to amend the
Navigation Protection Act and to make consequential
amendments to other Acts).
“We’re in favour of pipelines to move our products
in the oil and gas sector to the rest of Canada, as
well as the rest of the world,” he said. “And, we are
opposed to the current format of the carbon tax. To
tax the average family, that’s not working. It doesn’t
prove to have any effect on emissions, so they need
to redo the carbon tax or abolish it.”
On Feb. 14, the convoy will gather in Red Deer at
8 a.m., and after a few ceremonies will proceed on
Highway 2 southbound. At Calgary, they will turn east
onto Highway 1, and expect to be passing through
Strathmore between 11 a.m. and noon.
“We’re hoping for 400 or 500 trucks leaving Red
Deer,” said Carritt. “And we’re hoping some join in
from Strathmore and Medicine Hat and other points
along the way.”
“We need to spread the word outside the yellow
vest group that we’re fighting for Canada. It doesn’t
matter if you put the yellow vest on or not, just join.
We’re going to be making history here,” said Carritt.

What started as an idea
four years ago is quickly
turning into a promising
business venture for 20-year-
old AJ Dykens-Dunbar, who
has created a homemade
easy-starting fire starter, with
support from the Strathmore
Foothills Advocacy in Motion
(FAIM) Society.
The Strathmore AIM soci-
ety, which is celebrating 10
years in the Strathmore area,
“supports individuals to have
an independent life and to be
loved and accepted for their
abilities” with an overall goal
to “assist in the integration of
persons with disabilities into
existing social and economic
structures (and) to guide and
enable the recipient to make
informed decisions about
their needs, goals and objec-
tives,” said Beverly Roppel,
FAIM program manager in
Strathmore.
Dykens-Dunbar was given
the opportunity to open his
entrepreneurial start-up af-
ter receiving a grant from an
anonymous donor through
FAIM, and AJ’s Fire Starters
took flame.
The idea was born follow-
ing Dykens-Dunbar’s finding
that many store-bought fire
starters yield poor results.
He set out to create his own
long-lasting fire starter af-
ter finding inspiration from
a friend’s homemade mod-
el that was used to start a
seemingly unignitable fire
four years ago, and in turn
fueling his desire to turn
his discovery into a thriving
business.
“Once I was told I had
help with it and had money
to actually start up, I was like
OK, let’s do this … and they
do stay going, it’s so simple
and all natural and works,”
said Dykens-Dunbar, who
added that he makes and
packages the product at the
Strathmore AIM society with
help from job councillors.
The all-natural fire starter
is made completely out of
recycled products to make it
environmentally friendly. It
is made from re-used paper
egg cartons filled with recy-
cled wood chunks and melt-
ed donated candles before
being packaged in recycled
newspaper.
It took a couple iterations
before finding the perfect
mix of ingredients to create
a long-lasting fire starter that
burns up to 30 minutes, even
in strong winds.
“In the beginning, it was
super difficult because we
were trying to fine-detail
everything, but we finally
got down to a science how
to make them. We (have)

a good recipe now,” said
Dykens-Dunbar, who can
produce approximately 40 a
day and who hopes to grow
his business.
Individual fire starters are
sold for $1 each, or a pack
of six starters with matches
are sold for $5. They work
well for in-home fireplaces,
campfires and bonfires, and
are also a great addition to
survival and car kits.

Recycling pilot program tackles agricultural waste • Natural Teeth Whitening

Alberta Agriculture and Forestry is
helping fund a three-year pilot program
that will recycle agricultural plastics.
The Alberta Beef Producers will re-
ceive $750,000 to coordinate the pilot
program on behalf of the Agricultural
Plastics Recycling Group (APRG). APRG
is made up of 20 stakeholder groups
ranging from commodity associations
to rural municipalities to retailers.
The Alberta Agricultural Plastics Re-
cycling Pilot Program is aimed at recy-
cling grain bags and twine, researching
markets for other agricultural plastics
not included in the pilot program, con-
ducting a waste characterization study
to determine agricultural plastic vol-
umes, surveying producers to get feed-
back, and educating producers on the
program and how to recycle their plas-
tics.
The pilot will determine the finan-
cials, logistics and operations of recy-
cling agricultural plastics that could
help inform a future policy solution to
the issue.
A Government of Alberta study in
2012 revealed that around 50 per cent
of agricultural producers were burn-
ing their agricultural plastics on-farm.
Sending plastics to a landfill was also a
common method of disposing of agri-

Alberta has only two honourable choices:
equality or independence

Alberta has been forced to a crossroads and only
two honourable options remain for us: equality or
independence.
Accepting the status quo – regardless of who
rules in Ottawa and Edmonton – will see Alber-
tan’s anger wax and wane, but it will keep Alber-
tans as a second-class people and a quasi-colony
to be milked for vote-buying elsewhere.
Inequities faced by Alberta are many: equaliza-
tion and a host of lesser-known transfer programs
that cost us $20 billion a year, a Senate where
provinces with one-fifth our population have three
times as many seats, an “economic union” whose
free trade enforcement is laughable.
Albertans are proud Canadians, and we want
nothing more than to be treated equally with our
fellow provinces. To achieve this, we once put our
faith in the Mulroney PCs to deliver us from Pierre
Trudeau, only to be taken for granted and plun-
dered to buy votes elsewhere. We started the Re-
form Party to demand “The West Wants In!” only
to discover that for the West to get in, we had to
water down our demands for reform so much that
the project left us little better in the end.
The math is simple: Alberta has most of the
money and little of the votes. Whoever resides in
the prime minister’s office will only tilt the degree
to which Alberta is plundered.
Begging for Ottawa to buy us a pipeline or re-
questing small, tinkering changes to equalization
will fix none of this.
In my travels, Albertans have told me clearly: the
time for talk is over. It’s now equality or indepen-
dence.
The Freedom Conservative Party (FCP) is com-
mitted as our most important election pledge that
if Alberta’s next government cannot negotiate an
agreement recognizing a place of equality and
honour for Alberta within one year of this election,
that Albertans will decide for themselves in a vote
on independence.
What does equality look like? For the FCP, it
means: ending equalization, a hard cap on net
wealth transfers from Alberta to other provinc-
es, equal and elected Senate representation, and
strengthening the now worthless constitutional
protections for free trade and market access across
provinces. It means Alberta having the same rights
as Quebec: to establish our own police force, an
Alberta Pension Plan, an Alberta Employment In-
surance Plan, directly administer the Firearms Act
and establish our own immigration system.
None of these demands ask for special treatment
or favours. Only equality.

Police arrest suspect in Strathmore ATM theft

A 48-year-old Calgary man was arrested Jan. 31
as part of an ongoing investigation into ATM thefts
in December and January in the Calgary region.
Guy Stewart of Calgary has been charged with
40 criminal code offences, all but one related to
ATMs. These charges cleared investigations from
several jurisdictions around the Calgary region,
including Strathmore.
At about 8:30 a.m. on Christmas day, an ATM
was stolen from the Strathmore Family Centre.

The Freedom Conservative Party is the only par-
ty in Alberta that believes that independence must

unquestionably better than continuing to live un-
der the status quo.
Those who scoff at the mere mention of inde-
pendence as an option are effectively arguing that
“it is better to live on our knees, than to die on
our feet.” We reject this false dichotomy. An equal
Alberta inside of confederation can live on its feet
and continue to be the anchor of Canada, but if
this is not possible, then an independent Alberta
– with or without other western provinces – can
prosper beyond our current horizons.
An independent Alberta would have a GDP per
capita in the very top tier of nations; in the same
class as Singapore, Switzerland and Norway, mov-
ing us from 34th globally to ninth.
An independent Alberta would be landlocked
like a provincial Alberta but would retain an extra
$20 billion (net) in taxes a year and hold consider-
able leverage in negotiating with a British Colum-
bia that surely desires Canadian access, as much as
Alberta desires coastal access.
An independent Alberta would negotiate its own
trade relationships, unencumbered by Ottawa’s
obsession with sex, race and carbon, and the main
areas of disagreement with the United States: steel,
aluminum and supply management of dairy.
And should we choose, Alberta would be free to
rid ourselves of supply management itself, which
makes it effectively illegal for Albertans to produce
enough dairy for our own consumption so as to
protect Quebec-based quotas.
Independence would not be easy. It would not
be a solution to all Alberta’s problems. But it would
finally allow Alberta to live on its feet.
If the Freedom Conservative Party elects a strong
caucus to Alberta’s next legislature, we will fight
first and foremost for an Alberta that can continue
in confederation with equality and honour; but
should the status quo prevail and Ottawa fails to
heed the prairie fire burning its way, then we will
ensure that the people have the right to choose an
Alberta that is strong, free and sovereign.

ting theft; wearing a disguise during the commis-
sion of an offence; and two counts of failing to
comply with conditions of a recognizance.
Stewart has also been charged with numerous
offenses in other jurisdictions.
Stewart was scheduled to appear in in court in
Calgary on Feb. 6. Results of that initial appear-
ance were too late for this edition of the Times.

Rosebud student
produces
two-act,
Off-Broadway
musical

Daddy Long Legs, a two-act musi-
cal, will be performed in Rosebud, Feb.
8-10.
Frances MacDonald, fourth-year stu-
dent at Rosebud School of the Arts
(RSA), is producing and performing
the show. The musical, written by Paul
Gordon and John Caird, was produced
Off-Broadway in 2015. It’s based on
Jean Webster’s classic novel, published
in 1912.
The show is “a cross between Annie
and You’ve Got Mail,” said MacDonald.
“The script is charming and the music
whimsical. This story is a family-friend-
ly delight.”
An anonymous donor pays for or-
phan Jerusha Abbott (played by Mac-
Donald) to attend college. The donor’s
only requirement is that she write him
monthly letters and never expect a re-
ply. Jerusha hasn’t met her benefactor
(played by Joel Braun), but when she
glimpses his long-legged shadow, she
nicknames him Daddy Long Legs.

plays piano, James Foster is on cello
and Zach Running Coyote is on guitar.

Daddy Long Legs is MacDonald’s Fi-
nal Project and is a much larger pro-
duction than most RSA graduating stu-
dents take on. She said it was the music
that attracted her.
“As soon as I listened to the music,
I was tracking with the story with its
soaring harmonies, (its) whimsy as well
as its simplicity. The music is crafted in
a way that holds both … Jerusha’s and
Jervis’ hearts in the open. My heart in-
stantly connected to the journey of Jer-
vis and Jerusha. This connection made
me want to discover more,” she said.
“Piano, cello and guitar … all have a
voice in the show and carry out both
Jervis’s and Jerusha’s thoughts. The
styles (vary) from beautifully lyrical
and jazzy all the way to light and play-
ful. The music holds the heart of this
story.”

Groundhog Day forecasts more fun than fact

crowds gather for it every year, but
Groundhog Day is more about fun than
fact, says a University of Alberta expert.
Brought by German immigrants to
Pennsylvania, the popular weather-pre-
dicting tradition stems from the super-
stition that if a hibernating groundhog
emerging from its burrow on Feb. 2
sees a shadow due to clear weather, it
will retreat to its den and winter will
last another six weeks. If it can’t see its
shadow because of cloudiness, spring
will come early.
“Although the first groundhog in
that area of Pennsylvania does emerge
between seeing a shadow or not and
future weather is pure myth,” said Jan
Murie, a professor emeritus in the Fac-
ulty of Science.
In fact, not much is really known
about what causes groundhogs – the
chunky relatives of squirrels and mar-
mots – to come out of hibernation
when they do, Murie said.
“Like a lot of ecological questions,
there’s so much environmental and in-
dividual variability.”
Even something as simple as ice-
plugged burrows can affect when a
groundhog pokes its head out to check
on spring, Murie said. “There’s a suite
of things, a multitude of reasons that
can have an effect.”
For instance, in the Richardson’s
groundhog – it’s been discovered that
there are some biochemical factors
that could play a role, Murie said. Tem-
peratures and timing of weather events
such as snowstorms, as well as snow
depth, have also been explored, “but
research hasn’t been able to pin down
an exact sequence of events that lead to
emergence.”
That said, animals do follow annual
cycles such as migration, breeding –
and hibernation – that influence be-

CERTIFICATE RECERTIFICATION
The Farmer Pesticide Certification course is a tool intended to help farmers
to reduce risks associated with pesticide use. This course is recommended
under the Alberta Environmental Farm Plan, and mandatory for farmers
who wish to use restricted pesticides that require certification such as Alu-
minum phosphide.

Dr. Bill Hamman has instructed the pest application for Provincial certifications for over
25 years and is considered a top lecturer on the subject material. He is President of

Custom Applicator certificates with a very successful pass rate for students taking the

dard. The focus is on whole foods
prepared at home. Rather than dictate

shows how to “build a plate” with half
the plate consisting of vegetables and/
or fruit, a quarter plate for grains and a
quarter for proteins.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation of
Canada lauded the new Food Guide.
“It was designed to make preparing

while improving our health,” said Yves
Savoie, CEO of Heart and Stroke. “As
we’ve said in the past, ‘we need to cut
the crap.’ Sugary drinks are the single
greatest contributor of sugar in our di-

The Dietitians of Canada stated the
launch represents a “bold and coura-
geous step” for health promotion in
Canada.
“What is striking about the new Cana-
da’s Food Guide is the shift to a broader

Canadians should eat, but also how they
should eat,” said CEO Nathalie Savoie.
“The recommendations and online tools

The local double-A bantam team beat
the Red Deer Ramada 8-2 on Feb. 1
in Hussar, crushed the Red Deer Steel
Kings 5-0 on Feb. 2 in Red Deer and
edged out the Taber Golden Suns 1-0
on Feb. 3 in Hussar.
The Warriors ability to score from

against the Ramada.
Six Warriors scored two points and
seven others added one. Warriors goal-

The Strathmore Wheatland Kings
needed an extra period to beat one of
their hated divisional rivals in the High
River Flyers 5-4 on Feb. 1 in High River.
The Kings started out slow and had
to battle back from several deficits to
get the victory.
“We were down a few times but we
just kept shooting,” said Kings assistant
coach Chris Williams. “We were able
to tie up in the third; it ended up go-
ing into overtime and we got the win
which was a huge breath of relief.”
Kings forward Robert Butterwick
scored a big goal to tie the game up
and send it to the extra frame. Kings
goaltender Brett Willan protected the
net and centre Lucas Muenchrath had
two goals in the contest, including
the game winner. Muenchrath usually
sticks to the passing department and
has had a strong season with 48 points
in 36 games.
“He wasn’t having the best game to
start so I was on him to shoot the puck
more,” said Williams. “He took that

and they will play their final game
against each other on Feb. 8 at 8 p.m.
The Kings will close out their season
against the Lomond Lakers on Feb. 9
at 8 p.m.
“It’d be nice to get two more wins
and head into playoffs with some mo-
mentum,” said Williams. “Hopefully we
can claim home ice for the first series.
That’s the goal going forward.”

COOK, Ruth Dementia Care remember...
It is with sadness that I sit down to
write the obituary for my best friend

Ruth, who passed away on the 31st of
January in Strathmore, AB. Ruth was
born on December 7th, 1942 in Manitou, Manitoba.
She was the only girl in a family of five born to her
parents, Gordon and Ella Sprung.
She grew up on a farm, a sixth generation farm now
owned by her nephew. As a child, she walked to a
one room country school and later boarded out for
high school. In 1961, she went into nurses training
and later to university to earn her Bachelor of Nursing
Degree. She was a nursing instructor at Grace Hospi-
tal School of Nursing in 1968 when she met Dwight. 403-934-5294
They were married on August 30th, 1969. Together
with his sister, Delight, and her husband, Dave Knapp,
they ranched at Peonan Point and Steep Rock. It was
there that their two daughters, Lynette and Janice www. StrathmoreTimes.com
were born. Ruth loved the ranching way of life. She
wasn’t much good with a lasso or a branding iron
but if she had a broom or frying pan, she was hard to CONTACT
beat. Her cinnamon buns were world famous. Before
we had Hydro on the ranch, there were three out-
houses that Ruth wanted to keep clean. We called
