2 Types of Motion

Flow chart showing various types of motion

For teacher: explain this classifications.
3 Rectilinear motion

You see a car or aeroplane moving. All their parts move through the same
distance in same amount of time. This type of motion is called Rectilinear
motion. Most of the objects around us, move in this way.
A car always has a rectilinear motion but it can move in a straight line or on
a curved path.
Other examples include march-past of soldiers in a parade or the falling of a
stone
4 Oscillatory motion
In oscillatory motion, an object moves to and fro about a fixed point in fixed
interval of time.
The motion of the pendulum of wall clock is oscillatory motion

Explain this. Give some more examples.

5 Periodic Motion
If the same motion occurs again and again, it is known as a repetitive motion.
A repetitive motion that repeats itself after same intervals of time is known
as periodic motion.

Expalin the examples shown in the slide.

6 Periodic Motion in Musical Instruments
Images of guitar and tabla
When strings of a guitar striken, they undergo fast periodic producing sound.
Similarly, when skin of tabla is beaten, its skin undergo fast periodic motion,
producing sound
7 Non-periodic Motion

There are some repetitive motions, which are not periodic in nature. Motion
that is not periodic is known as non-periodic motion. For example, swinging
of your arms while walking, a bouncing ball on the ground, your heartbeat
etc. In all these examples, the interval of time after which the motion is
repeated is not always the same.
8 Circular Motion

Any point on the giant wheel moves in a circular motion.

Motion of stone is circular motion.
For teacher given some Idea about rotational motion as well.

What happens when you spin a top? It moves round and round fixed at a
same place. Similar is the case when you switch on a fan. Do the different
parts of the top or the fan move through the same distance in the same time?
No, the outer portions of the top and the fan move through a greater distance
than the inner portions. Here in the figure, we can see the top and the fan
moving around an axis passing through its centre.

Such a motion of object where the different parts of the object move through
different distances in a given interval of time, and the object moves around
an axis, is known as rotational motion.
9 Ans:
The merry go round is undergoing rotatory motion as it is moving about an
axis through its centre and also its different parts are traveling different
distances in same time. On the other hand, the boy sitting on merry go round
is undergoing circular motion as its whole body is travelling through same
distance in same time along a circular path.
10 Different Motions at the same time
An object can undergo more than one kind of motion at a time.
So we have learned about various types of motion an object can undergo. But
do you know that an object can undergo more than one kind of motion at a
time. Lets see how with the help of an example.
Our earth rotates about its axis (rotational motion) and also it revolves
around the Sun in a circular path ( Translatory motion) Also, both its rotation
and revolution are periodic motions. So, we can see that the earth undergoes
various types of motion at a same time.
Lets see other example. The wheels of a bicycle rotate (rotational motion) as
well as move forward (translatory motion) . Similarly a ball rolling on the
ground undergoes both rotational as well as translatory motion.
11 Ans:
(a) An ocean wave undergoes random motion
(b) An arrow fired from the bow undergoes translatory motion.
(c) blade of a fan undergoes circular motion
12 Ans:
Any any point on spinning cricket ball thrown towards a batman is rotating
as well as moving forward undergoing circular as well as translatory motion.
Ans is (d)
13 So, till now we have learnt various kinds of motion. Let us now learn about
the paramater which defines how fast motion is taking place. You may have
heard various instances in your day to day life regarding how fast a motion is
taking plane.

Explain with the help of data given in the slide.

14 Ans: Circular as well as Oscillatory motion.
15 Speed

The distance covered by a moving object in unit time is known as its speed.
Its helps us figure out how fast an object is moving or for making
comparison between two or more objects. But how we express the speed of
an object?
Speed of an object = Distance/ time
What is the unit in which speed is expressed?
The standard unit of distance is metre (m) and that of time is seconds (s). So,
speed of an object is usually expressed in metres per second (m/s).
For example: Speed of the fastest man is 10 m/s, speed of cheetah is 20 m/s
and speed of jet plane is 1000 m/s
16 Ans: (a) Speed = distance/time
s = d/t

(b) Distance = speed x time

d=sxt

(c) Time = distance/speed

t = d/s
17 Ans:
One way distance (d) = 140 km
Speed (s) = 70 km/hr
Time taken for one way journey (t) = d/s
= 140/70
= 2 hr
18 Ans:
Time (t) = 2.5 hours
Speed (s) = 700 km/hr
Distance (s) = s x t
= 700 x 2.5
= 1750 km
