ABSTRACT

Research on the Origin of a formation known as provenance studies, this

study was conducted to determine the origin of the source rock Cawang
Members of the Kikim formation predominantly sandstone with a high quartz
content. Study of rock origin is very important to understand paleogeografi
(Boggs, 2008).
The research was conducted by observation of outcrop and rock sampling for
granulometry analysis, grain morphology analysis, facies analysis and
petrographic analysis. Rock sampling is done on sandstone outcrops that
have been done detail profile.
The research area is administratively located in two sub-districts namely
subdistrict Muaradua and subdistrict Lengkiti, South OKU district, South
Sumatera. In geological order, the research area is included into Southern
Sumatera Basin which is the back arc basin.
Further results, including field observations, granulometric analysis,
morphological analysis of the grains, facies analysis and petrographic
analysis and literature study, show sandstone Cawang Members Kikim
Formation as sandstone with monocrystalline quartz content, sediment-sized
sand particles with poorly sorting. Rocks from the Cawang Members of the
Kikim formation derived from the recycle basement in the mountains Gumai.
The origin rocks of the cation Cawang Members of the Kikim formation are
from the recycle basement which is the source rock located in subduction
zone, the rich material is fragmented from pre-existing sedimentary rock and
rich in quartz and feldsar minerals.
