CWDM Troubleshooting Procedures
For each troubleshooting please follow each steps from CAS E I to CASE V one by one

First check the NE (CWU side) is active for monitoring.

Right click on the NE query the time management

CASE I: Power Problem

If the NE’s time management query is not successful proceed to the next steps.

1. Check the lambda(channel number) of the NE on CWU side ETMp card

2. With the lambda of the NE query the current alarm management on CWE side ETMp card.
3. If both L1R and L2R links read LOS and No Input power alarm at the same time, it is definitely
power problem.
4. Additionally NCP cards on the left and right NEs of the NE in question read LOS alarm at the
same time if it is power problem.

CASE II: Fiber Cut

If the NE’s time management query is successful try the next steps.

1. Query the current alarm management and identify which link (L1R or L2R) reads LOS and No
input power alarm.
Open the NEright click on ETMp cardquery current alarm management

2. take the lambda (Channel number) the ETMp card

3. Open the CWE side and do the same procedure on step 1 on the ETMp card of the lambda we
took from CWU (Step 2)
4. Take the time of alarm occurrence from the query of current alarm management(step 1)
5. Investigate the alarms on the other ETMp cards on CWE side
6. If the same alarms (Los and No input power) on all ETMp cards occurred at the same time we
can say that the problem is fiber cut

3
CASEIII:GIS (Access Side Problem)
If the NE’s time management query is successful try the next steps.

1. Check the received power levels on both C1R and C2R ports of ETMp card on CWU side
Open the NEright click on ETMp cardoptical power querycheck the
IN(OAC_CTP_So)Query
If one of the received levels is ok then the connection between GIS and ETMp is fine.
2. Check the packet exchange between GIS and ETMp
Open the NEright click on ETMp cardoptical power queryselect GE Tran&Reve from
Policy drop down arrowQuery
3. Take a look on Transmit and Received Packet values by querying repeatedly.
If the received packet value is not changed (stuck on a value) or became zero every time we
queried, it is definitely the GIS problem

CASE IV:-IP Side Problem

If you checked case I, II and III and the links became OK or working Normal in both CWU and
CWE side you have to check IP side connection

MSAGs in Bole, Arada, Addis Ketama, Laghar (Filowoha), Old Airport, Kirkos, Yaka, Sidis Kilo & Nefas Silk
their CWE OAC sides are directly connected to IP Switch. The other MSAGs found in other sites not
mentioned in the above list are connected to IP switch through M900 (DWDM) so you have to check it
first M900 network.

(A):- IP side problem troubleshooting procedure for sites directly connected to

IP switch

1. Check the received power levels on both C1R and C2R ports of ETMp card on CWE side

Open NEright click on ETMp cardoptical power querycheck the IN(OAC_CTP_So)Query

If one of the received levels is ok then the connection between ip switch and ETMp is fine.

2. Check the packet exchange between IP switch and ETMp

Open NEright click on ETMp cardoptical power queryselect GE Tran&Reve from Policy
drop down arrowQuery

3. Take a look on Transmit and Received Packet values by querying repeatedly.

4
If the received packet value is not changed (stuck on a value) or became zero every time we
queried, it is definitely the IP problem

(B):- IP side problem troubleshooting procedure for sites connected through

DWDM

1. Check the received power levels on both C1R and C2R ports of ETMp card on CWE side

Open NEright click on ETMp cardoptical power querycheck the IN(OAC_CTP_So)Query

If one of the received levels is ok then the connection between near-end GEM8 and ETMp is
fine.

2. Check the received power level and performance of OCH and OAC Side of the near –end GEM8 card

Steps to Query OAC &OCH side input power and performance

Open M900 NEright click on appropriate GEM8 cardoptical power querycheck the IN
(OAC_CTP_So) and IN (OCH_CTP_So)Query

Open M900 NEright click on appropriate GEM8 cardperformance querycheck the IN

(OAC_CTP_So) and IN (OCH_CTP_So)Query

And the Queried in put power in both OCH and OAC side and performance value of OCH side is
good, go to the next CASE .if not the problem is definitely in the M900 Network
4. If the Queried value is different from the desired value, repeat the above steps in Far-end GEM8
card. If everything is OK, check the packet exchange between Far-end GEM8 and IP switch.
Open NEright click on Far-end GEM8 cardoptical power queryselect GE Tran&Reve from
Policy drop down arrowQuery

5. If receiving packet value is not changed (stuck on a value) or became zero every time we queried, it
is definitely IP problem

N.B. The Near-end GME8 is found in DWDM ring network named with CWE name. And the Far-end
GME8 is located on sites mentioned in the beginning of CASE IV.
e.g. Lebu MSAGs Near-end GME8 is found in Lebu DWDM. Its far-end GME8 is located in Nefas silk.

5
Case V: Transmission Problem

If the NE’s time management query is successful try the next steps.

1. Check the received power levels on both L1R and L2R ports of ETMp card on CWU and CWE side
Open the NEright click on ETMp cardoptical power querycheck the
IN(OCH_CTP_So)Query
If one of the received levels is ok in both CWE and CWU side then the connection between CWE
and CWU is fine.
2. Check the packet exchange between GIS and ETMp
Open the NEright click on ETMp cardoptical power queryselect GE Tran&Reve from
Policy drop down arrowQuery
3. Take a look on Transmit and Received Packet values by querying repeatedly.
If the transmit packet value is not changed (stuck on a value) or became zero every time we
queried, it is definitely the Transmission problem
