PIPING AND INSTRUMENTATION DIAGRAMS

5.0 PURPOSE
The safety of the process is greatly increased by having information about the equipment
and identification of system components available for training of personnel and for the
operation of the system. Accurate and up to date Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams
provide a part of this information.

5.1 SCOPE
The P&IDs are to be developed for the documentation of the facility’s equipment, flow
pressure, state and control. The P&IDs shall help document and shall identify all the
aspects of the equipment, piping, valves, and controls. The Process Safety Information
and the development of P&IDs shall be complete before any Process Hazard Analysis is
performed or a process is charged or brought online.

5.2 LOCATIONS OF P & IDS

The PIDs are located in this section.

5.3 INITIAL REVIEW AND ACCEPTANCE OF THE P&ID DRAWINGS

The P&IDs are to be reviewed and accepted initially by the owner/operator of a facility to
assure that they reflect the current refrigeration system(s) status, design, and installation.

Involved employee’s participation in the initial verification and review of the P&IDs is
recommended.

5.4 REVIEW OF THE P&IDS UPON CHANGES IN SYSTEM

P&IDs are to be reviewed and updated should any part of the system be modified to
assure that they reflect the current refrigeration system(s) status, design, and installation.
This shall include changes that result in the process, technology and equipment, and
changes to the facilities.

Where any changes occur in the P&ID drawing set as a result of the review, the SOPs for
the equipment and facility shall also be reviewed for accuracy according to the changes in
the P&IDs. Training on the SOPs must be completed prior to operation.

5.5 DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT

Before the facility enters production with new or changed equipment, the employer shall
verify the accuracy of the P&IDs.

Process Safety Information

The employer shall verify the accuracy of the P&IDs upon any system change in
equipment or piping. The included tracking form “PIDs: Changes To Drawings” must
be updated.

Revision of the drawing(s) shall be tracked by the changing of the revision number (Rev. 1, for
example) and date in the “Revision” area on the drawing(s).

The final drawings should be labeled “As Built”.

GENERAL NOTICE:
P&ID drawings must be reviewed by the owner/operator of the facility for accuracy and
