The September 19, 1985, magnitude 8.1 earthquake and its magnitude 7.5 aftershock caused unprecedented damage to
structures in Mexico City. The types of structural damage and the emergency changes to the building code that occured in 1985
are summarized and a numberof examples of repair and strengthening techniques that were used to satisfy the emergency code
requirements are presented
