Institute Background

Establishment
Indian Institute of Management Shillong (IIM Shillong or IIM-S),
formerly Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management
Shillong(RGIIM), is a public, fully autonomous management institute
in the city of Shillong, Meghalaya. It was the seventh Indian Institute of
Management to be established in India.
Established in 2007, with a vision of expansion and mobilization of
facilities for offering quality management education and research
in Northeast India, IIM Shillong differentiates itself by promoting
sustainability, also hosting an international conference
on sustainability, annually.
IIM Shillong offers postgraduate, doctoral, and executive programmes
in management education, and Management Development
Programmes (MDPs) spanning different streams of management.
Admissions to the institute are based on scores obtained in
the Common Admission Test (CAT). In addition, the institute has a
Centre for Development of North Eastern Region (CEDNER),
constituted to offer programmes relevant to the local community and
society of the state and the region.
Foundation
The proposal to start an Indian Institute of Management in the
Northeast was unanimously taken in June 2004 by the Union
Minister of Human Resource Development along with the Chief
Ministers of the North Eastern states in the review meeting held at
Shillong. Shillong was drafted as the permanent location for the
institute after consultation between the Ministry of Development of
North Eastern Region (MDONER) and the Chief Ministers of the
states.
The foundation stone for the institute was laid by Shri. Arjun Singh,
Union Minister of Human Resource Development, on December 1,
2007. The admittance of the first batch of students for the Post-
Graduate Programme was formally inaugurated by Dr Donkupar Roy,
Chief Minister of Meghalaya, on July 4, 2008.
The institute was set up at the Mayurbhanj Palace, the summer retreat
of the Mayurbhanj Kings of Odisha. The Palace was renovated by the
Meghalaya government with the construction of a permanent campus
in development at Umsawli.
The first Chairman of the Board of Governors was Shri. Rathindra
Nath Dutta, and the first Director, Prof Ashoke K. Dutta.

Infrastructure
The institute is currently functioning from a temporary campus in the Mayurbhanj
Complex (the erstwhile summer palace of Mayurbhanj Kings). The Palace was renovated
by the Meghalaya government.

Work has commenced on the 120-acre site for the permanent campus.
The Campus includes a main building wherein the
administrative office, faculty offices, classrooms, library and
conference halls are housed. Apart from the main building, the
Institute also has an auditorium, guesthouse, number of small
syndicate rooms (separate) and student dormitories within the
campus. Faculty residences are situated just adjacent to the
campus.

STUDENT RESIDENCES

There are both single and double occupancy rooms available

for the students. Besides the basic amenities of a cot,
mattress, room heater, wardrobe, study table and a chair, in
every room, the dormitories are connected with a state of the
art Wireless Mesh Network (WMN). There is also a common
reading room, common recreation room equipped with table-
tennis, carom, and television facilities. Within the confines of
the dormitories are a gymnasium, basketball and badminton
court present inside the campus.
Network

The main campus and its two annexes are connected with high speed optical fibre
backbone. The campus LAN is supported by both wired and wireless infrastructure. The
wired infrastructure is built over robust equipments with enhanced security features. The
entire campus is covered by a modern wireless mesh network (WMN), which supports
reliable communication from any part of the campus. High speed Internet connectivity is
thus available across all hostel rooms through the wireless infrastructure. The gateway
to outside campus is built in the form of 1 Gbps Internet leased line connection from
National Knowledge Network, India.
Video Conferencing
Interaction with resource persons from outside is facilitated through high resolution video
conferencing using both IP as well as ISDN networks. In addition to traditional but high
resolution equipments, the Institute has also procured multiple licenses for software
based video conferencing solution which supports many to many multicast
communication over ordinary broadband connection using simple equipments like
laptops with webcams.

Campus ERP

The entire business process of the organization is automated with the help of Oracle
PeopleSoft enterprise resource planning solution. The Institute has implemented
modules related to student lifecycle, finance and accounting, human resources, stores
and inventory, etc. The entire records of the institute are thus maintained online,
allowing all concerned to access the necessary services without the limitations of office
hours. In addition, each course is provided with its own portal, allowing the participants
to download the resources at leisure, anytime and from anywhere. These portals also
allow and encourage participants to carry on discussions on various topics of interest,
thus extending learning process across the available 24 hours.

Library

The Knowledge Centre (library) of IIM,which is one of the most

modern and tech savvy libraries in the country, started
functioning right from the time of inception of the Institute. Our
goal is to make the library one of the most vibrant and
productive branches of the Institute so that it may keep pace
with the global, dynamic and technology enabled information
age, and meet the expectations of its end users.

With the above aim in view, within a short span of time, we

have acquired an excellent collection of management related
books, journals and non book materials, which we consider as
our greatest asset. The library maintains separate collection of
Reference Books, Text Books, General books, Working Papers
and other documents , whereas the non book collection
consists of video cassettees, Compact Discs, etc. Faculty
members are requested to make regular requisition of latest
books to add value to the Knowledge Centre and equip the
library with the latest collection of books. The library also has
the latest collection of periodicals, magazines and
newspapers. We have also begun the process of updating the
Centre with rich collection of both Indian and Foreign Journals
for which the process in underway.

Journals are available both online as well as in printed

volumes.

The Library is also equipped with the latest E-Resources (E-

Books, E-Journals, and Data-base) such as CMIE – Prowess,
ISI-Emerging Markets, ProQuest, and EBSCO – Business
Source Complete. We also have access to HBR cases which
are widely used by all students and faculty members. The
Library also has some special Collections of i) EXIM Bank, ii)
World Bank, and iii) Harvard Business Review.

The Knowledge Centre also joined the IIM Consortia Cross

Sharing of E-Journals with three Publishers: (i) Taylor and
Francis, (ii) Wiley- Blackwell and (ii) Springer.

We have also arranged for a Tie up with :

 AIMS (Association of Indian Management Schools)
 American Library, Kolkata
 ASSOCHAM (Association of Chamber of Commerce)
 British Council Library, Kolkata
 All the Indian Institutes of Management
 Exim Banks
 HBSP (Harvard Business School Publishing)
 IGCC (Indo-German Chamber of Commerce)
 AACSB (Association to Advanced Collegiate Schools of Business)
International to become part of the premier Global Management
education network
 National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD) for greater and
better exchange of library resources.
The varied type of services that we make available in our
Knowledge Centre apart from lending are the References
Services, CAS (Current Awareness Services), SDI (Selective
Dissemination of Information), Reprographic Services,
Information Alert Services (E- Mail Services), Lest-you-miss
(newspaper clippings) services, and ILL (inter library Loan)
services and services related to newspaper clippings.

All the above mentioned online facilities are available through

the Knowledge Centre E-Portal of the Institute.

The most significant achievement as far as the library facilities

are concerned is related to the “Library Automation” Services.
We are one of the few libraries in the country which is fully
automated and the VTLS software with RFID Library
Management System is being used for the purpose of house-
keeping of library activities and networking systems such as
intranet, internet and Wi-Fi. The RFID technology makes the
Circulation of books easier as the end-users can do the ISSUE
and RETURN through the KIOSK and DROP BOX machine
respectively, along with the use of smart proximity cards. The
entire Library is covered by CCTV. This new technological
environment enables the library to serve its clientele in a
better, faster and in a more efficient manner.

The five different levels of automation which needs to be

highlighted are as follows:
 Library cataloguing system - OPAC for easy access by users
 House-keeping operations and networking
 Development of CD-ROM library/products
 E-mail System and Internet
 RFID (Rapid Radio Identification) - for security purposes

Our Library is forever open to new and innovative ideas and

we are determined to make our Knowledge Centre one of the
best and most user friendly libraries in the country
