Patna was one of India’s most polluted cities. In 1988, a group of young students decided
to do something about it. They thought that if they cleaned up the city and planted
hundreds of trees, they would make the quality of life better for everyone.
The students formed a group and called it Tarumitra – Friends of Trees. Four secondary-
5 school students organised a bicycle ride in the north of India to tell people about our
planet’s ecological crisis. The boys rode from Patna to Delhi – a distance of more than
1,045 kilometres. They went from place to place talking to people about protecting and
planting trees.
Tarumitra is doing many other things to protect the environment. One of its best
10 achievements is a 10-acre nature reserve in the centre of Patna with 50 different types
of trees. In 2010, the state government started cutting down trees near the Patna airport.
Schoolgirls carrying “Save the Tree” posters demonstrated to prevent this action. As
a result, the government stopped cutting down the trees. Tarumitra is also trying to
change the way people in India celebrate the Holi Festival. Every spring, people celebrate
15 this festival by lighting big fires with branches from trees. In Patna, they burn rubbish
instead of trees. Thanks to Tarumitra, people in other areas are going to do the same.
Tarumitra students also help to protect wild animals, reduce pollution from cars and
lorries and introduce clean forms of energy. They are working with a Swiss scientist to
open a factory making solar panels and solar cookers. The students showed people how
20 these amazing cookers work, and hopefully, people will start using them.
Tarumitra started more than 25 years ago and today it has got members in over 1,000
schools and colleges all over India. These hard-working young people won’t stop fighting
to protect their environment. If Tarumitra volunteers continue doing such good work,
Patna will become a model for other cities in India.
