PHAR4 HOMEWORK DUE SEPTEMBER 19, 2018

Arterial Blood Gas Analysis is used to evaluate gas exchange in the lungs, to assess integrity of the
ventilator control system and to determine the acid-base level of the blood. The ABG analysis is also
used for monitoring respiratory therapy. PaCO2- partial pressure of carbon dioxide- normal range 35-
40mmHg. PaO2-partial pressure of oxygen-normal range 75-100mmHg. SaO2- oxygen saturation-normal
range 95-100%. An elevated PaCo2 reflects alveolar hypoventilation, while a decrease reflects alveolar
hyperventilation. A decrease in PaO2 reflects hypoxaemia also hypoventilation. Changes with the PaCO2
alter the pH level so high PaCO2, low pH reflecting acidosis.
