ABSTRACT

Coating process is important to improve the work performance of the electrodes. One way to improve this
performance is coating with a material that is easily available, namely activated carbon. Activated carbon is
chosen because it has high absorption and large surface area. In this research, metal electrodes will be applied
using the electrospray system. Electrospray is chosen because the plating process is easier to control for the
desired layer thickness. The concept of the method used is the interaction of the solution to the electric field given
by a high voltage source on the electrospray system. The electrospray system consists of a high voltage source,
syringe, syringe pump and suspension that will be formed into particles. This study focused on studying the
parameters that influence the electrospray system and building an electrospray-based plating system. The
research began by mixing suspensions in the form of water or ethanol, activated carbon and surfactants. Addition
of surfaces will be added so that the solution surface tension is lower, because carbon compounds include those
that are difficult to dissolve in organic solvents or inorganic solvents. Then after the suspension is formed it will
proceed with the coating process using the electrospray system. After the coating process is carried out the
results will be tested using a microscope or Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to see the shape of the particle
size and morphology produced. The results of this coating will be used for Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC).
