OVERVIEW:

Proposed G+P+4 Residential Apartment building with closed spaces like

Studios,1BHKs ,2BHKs and Retail Shops. etc. ASHRAE 55-2010 standard is specific
for all the spaces with sedentary activities and non sedentary activities. Thermal criteria
and design for this building are based on all major environmental factors mentioned in
the standard:

1. Metabolic Rate
2. Clothing Insulation
3. Air Temperature
4. Radiant Temperature
5. Air Speed
6. Humidity

1. Metabolic Rate: Occupants are expected to have regular activities as specified in

Appendix A of the standard (pg.15) resulting in metabolic rates of 1.0 met and 2.0 met.

2. Clothing Insulation: As per table B1 and B3 in the standard the occupants are
expected to have Icl (clo) values of 0.5-0.6 in hot weather and 1.0-1.2 in cold.

3. Air Temperature & Radiant Temperature: The building is designed with active
mechanical system and fresh air system, Indoor and outdoor air is of a suitable
temperature for mechanical system with fresh air system, and a system of lights is used to
inform building occupants about the suitability.

Active mechanical system is designed to maintain the space conditioning for occupied
hours in the thermal comfort zone, as specified in figure 5.2.1.1, for 80% occupant
acceptability.

4. Air Speed: The location of the building is in Al Barsha South 5. The building is a
G+P+4 Residential building. The building is not affecting with high winds. Moreover, the
mechanical systems are designed to condition the space.

The Air speed at 3 feet above the ground level as per ASHRAE 55-2004 Appendix C.
The design and the placement of the diffusers are made in such a way that they have air
velocities of less than 40 feet/min. This eliminates higher air movement and scenarios
where air speeds are higher than comfort requirements.

5. Humidity: UAE climate is relatively Dry & Hot. Dubai city in particular has very few
days in a year where the humidity reaches the higher levels of humidity, and has mild
Climate throughout the year with no large diurnal fluctuations. The mechanical systems
do not have humidity controls.

As seen by these factors the mechanical and the fresh air system provided for the building
is expected to have thermal comfort for the occupants as required by ASHRAE 55-2004
standard.
