Success and failure of providing fertility preservation for ovarian cancer patients in

Indonesia : Case series

Abstract

Objective : Cancer treatment can affect female reproductive because the treatment may damage
the ovary. Loss of fertility could be a problem for cancer patients. Nevertheless, fertility
preservation (FP) are now available. This case study compared the success and failure cases in
providing fertility preservation for ovarian cancer patients in Indonesia

Design : case study

Method : We selected two medical records of women with ovarian cancer who planned to
chemotherapy and fertility preservation in 2018. The study was performed in the Department
of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital.

Result : Case 1. A 20-year-old unmarried woman has germ cell ovarian tumor, AMH 1,27
ng/ml. Patient had performed fertility sparing operation and plan for chemotherapy. Patient
was informed by healthcare provider about FP and agreed to perform oocyte pickup. An
ovarian stimulation was started before procedure. 15 Oocytes were frozen successfully. Case
2. A 17-year-old unmarried woman has yolk sac ovarian tumor, patient had performed fertility
sparing, AMH level is 0,6 ng/ml. Patient was consulted a day before chemotherapy and
unfortunately refused for having FP procedure. Her parents were lacked of information about
fertility preservation.

Conclusion : The comprehensive information about fertility preservation may influence on


patient decision which lead on successful or unsuccessful fertility preservation.

successfully. In other side, a 17-year-old unmarried woman has yolk sac ovarian tumor and
refused for having FP procedure due to her parents lack of information about that procedure.
The comprehensive information about fertility preservation may influence on patient decision
which lead on successful or unsuccessful fertility preservation.
