Peirce’s categories -- attempted simplification (10-10-2016)

The table below consists of 3 rows and 3 columns;

The columns seem to represent personhood:

1P = First Person = I, we

2P= Second Person= you, you (pl)

3P = Third Person = he, she, it, they

The rows starting at the top represent the three basic human functions:

top row = sense or perceive

middle row = act or do

bottom row = think

Here s= sensing or perceiving a= acting or doing, and t = thinking.

Now we jump to the meanings and rephrase them in the above terms.

Meanings

Representamen (1)
Qualisign (1,1) = X is representation showing some quality (green)
X refers to 1P sensing or 1Ps, meaning “I sense (see) this object.”
Sinsign = (1,2) = X is representation telling this is (road sign)
X refers to 1P acting or 1Pa, meaning “I tell you the instructions on this sign”
Legisign = (1,3) = X is representation 5 giving back law (referee’s whistle)
X refers to 1P thinking or 1Pt, meaning “I make you think of this law (offensive move)”

Object
Icon (2,1) = X resembles cause (penny coin, Lincoln)
X refers to 2Ps, so X resembles an entity (penny coin or Lincoln)
Index (2,2) = X suggests cause (smoke suggests fire)
X refers to 2Pa, or X (you=smoke) points to existence of a fire.
Symbol (2,3) = X is a convention ($)
X refers to 2Pt = X simply means “think dollars” if X is $.

Interprant
Rheme (3,1) = X gives back a possible (concept)
X refers to 3Ps = an intuition, a possible idea or situation
Dicent (3,2) = X gives back a fact (description)
X refers to 3Pa = X gives back a fact
Argument (3,3) = X gives back a reason (proposition)
X refers to 3Pt = X gives back a reason (proposition)

ternary pragmatics of incident response based

on 2nd order interprant
----------------------------------------------
Cher, Study and check this out for errors if you like (quite possible, except that I now
correctly have Interprant=3, Representamen=1 and Object = 2. 1 and 2 are saussure.
Peirce added the 3. to get1,2,3 .) . I suggest that it is the heart of your thesis.

Semiotics is like a programming language.

-------------------------------------------------
The basic ternary is

Object =Secondness = disrupted data = O = personal, sensitive

Interprant = Thirdness= Breach itself = I = Theft, etc.
Representamen = Firstness= notify stakeholders = R= List of Stakeholders to notify

the second (higher level) ternary is

Object = (verify)= I(O) or (3,2)

Interprant = (assess) =I(I) or (3,3)
Representamen = (prioritise) = I(R) or (3.1)

I think you have an hourglass figure (two connected triangles) with the connnecting
vertex being I,I

The top or upside-down triangle has I(O) and I(R) above (I,I)

The lower triangle has (I,I) above

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, from below

(verify)= I(O) or 3(2)= X(3,2)=> Sign= Symbol giving of disrupted data
Interprant = (assess) =I(I) =3(3) = X(3,3) => Sign= Argument linked to assess

Representamen = (prioritise) = I(R)= X(3,1)= > sign = Qualisign of prioritise =

what the quality of the disrupted data is (personal and/or sensitive)

This can hopefully be made clearer. (1/10/2016)
