To eradicate hunger and malnutrition, Project Bayan-Anihan was launched yesterday at Gawad

______ In his message during the launching program, Meloto emphasized the possibility of eradicating
malnutrition by maximizing the use of idle lands for food production.

______ The launching was attended by Gawad Kalinga founder Antonio Meloto, Tarlac Governor Victor
A. Yap, Gerona Mayor Dennis Norman T. Go, Unilever Philippines Chief Executive Officer John
Concepcion, barangay officials and indigent families from Gerona.

______ Bayan-Anihan Project, a food production program for the poor, is a multi-sectoral effort of
Gawad Kalinga, the Department of Agriculture, engaged local communities, local government
units, schools and the private sector.

______ “Sixty percent of our land remains idle yet millions of Filipino children are suffering from
malnutrition, allegedly, because of poverty, ” Meloto revealed to the audience that included
barangay officials and poor families.

______ The launching was highlighted with Harvesting Day and included competitions on Bayan-Anihan
Youth Jingle, dance presentations, traditional games, parade of fruits, vegetable cooking lessons
for adults and communal lunch fiesta.

______ Prior to the launching of Bayan-Anihan, a Luzon-wide simultaneous planting day in 115 sites was
conducted three months ago.

______ For his part Governor Yap relived the famous Filipino saying “kung may itinanim, may aanihin”
as he encouraged everyone to unite against malnutrition.
